You already know, it's been 2 years since one of the illest (if not THE illest) producers ever, James Yancey (aka J Dilla, aka Jay Dee) passed away. We still mourn your loss, my nigga. Not a week goes by that I don't play SOMETHING Dilla-related, whether it's a random instrumental or something a bit more well-known. In any case, on this day, there are a few things you need to check out:
One love.
- Rizoh posted DJ 2-Tone Jones' 33-track tribute to Dilla: A Brief Education on the Musical Genius of J Dilla
- Metal Lungies has the ill J Dilla edition of their Beat Drop series. I contributed some words on my fav Dilla beats in there.
- I've posted this twice, but you need to check out the J Dilla editorial over at HipHopDX entitled "Dilla Wafers". Great piece. They also interviewed both Ma Dukes and Illa J (Dilla's mother and brother) recently.
- You should also peep J Rocc's slammin' Thank You, Jay Dee (Act 3) mix, which is chock full of rare Dilla jawns alongside sick blends and dope cuts you should remember. I've also re-upped Act 2.
- I'd imagine the Mick Boogie x Busta Rhymes x J Dilla mixtape, Dillagence, is still available (sharebee mirror). Cop it for $10 and contribute to the J Dilla Foundation.
- This article from the Detroit Free Press entitled "Jay Dee's last days" is a deep look into what he was going through before he passed.
One love.
