Lil' Wayne ft. T-Pain "Got Money (DnB Bootleg)" |
Lil' Wayne ft. T-Pain "Got Money (DnB Bootleg)": Here's a bootleg on Running Cuts from this past summer - new to me. I've heard Weezy flipped in varying genres, and this has to be the worst of them all. Pretty monotonous for the majority of the song, and for as much of a flow Wayne has, they picked a pretty blah track to try and flip. You want to compliment the vocal, not try to overpower it.

Foreign Beggars ft. Guilty Simpson "Prove It" |
Foreign Beggars ft. Guilty Simpson "Prove It": I hit you with the "Contact" video on Monday, and just got passed this banger from the Foreign Beggars' United Colours of Beggattron album, which is out on the 12th (although an EP is on iTunes right now, featuring the aforementioned tracks, along with "Higher"). This has a few tags in it, but its dope enough to make me want to cop it off the strength of that beat. Reminds me of when I used to scramble for Maxell tapes to record the underground shows back in the day. UK to Detroit collaboration.

Jennifer Lopez ft. Pitbull "Fresh Out The Oven" |
Jennifer Lopez ft. Pitbull "Fresh Out The Oven" (prod. by The Neptunes): So I'm seeing this cut being billed as "Lola" ft. Pitbull. I remember, when J.Lo and the Geico gecko got together, his name for her was Lola. because of that, I can't call her that in good conscience. Is Jennifer channelling her inner Sasha Fierce? Who knows. What I do know is that 1) this isn't really any different than what she had been doing, and 2) why does Pitbull still get feature work? Was Flo Rida busy?
I have a feeling "Lola" will turn into some big concept album/repackaging of J.Lo for the new listeners. Only way I could even consider letting this slide is with an appropriate video.

Amerie ft. Trey Songz "Pretty Brown Eyes": I remember hearing heads talk about this Mint Condition-sampling cut from Amerie. This isn't bad at all - I could see this getting in regular radio rotation today, but I'm not as impressed as I thought I'd be. Instead of doing a true remake, they just sampled the tracks and flipped the melody. Eh.

Shyne Coming Home Today? |
Word on twitter, and HipHopDX, is that Shyne Po is set to be released from prison today, where he's been since the Summer of 2001.
I remember when he first came out... I don't know if his voice was too close to Biggie's, or if the loss of B.I.G. was still an open wound on my heart, but I wasn't into dude. At first. Then "Bonnie & Shyne" dropped, and was my guilty pleasure. Back then, I was Rawkus' out, Company Flow all that. That summer made me rediscover commercial Rap. And Shyne helped with that.
I won't go deep into the trial - Diddy did Shyne dirty - but we'll see what Po can do when he touches down. I've got a feeling a LOT of NY artists will be trying to get features from him. Remember how he lit up Usher's "Confessions Part II (Remix)"? I was working at AutoZone, putting up stock one Saturday, when this dropped. We had a boombox blasting that night, and I had to stop in my work and just reflect on his situation. I don't condone pulling out ratchets and squeezing off in the club, but dude is talented. And the world needs to hear his voice.
Bonus Beats "Shyne" / "More Or Less" / "Bad Boyz" / "Bang"
EDIT Shyne's being held in immigration; why is this coming up NOW!?
EDIT Now it looks like Shyne is being deported on Friday. Ain't that about a bitch?

Maxwell "Ascension (Jay Dee Remix)": Been an odd day today; the afternoon stretched into the early evening kind of hectic, but we (wifey and I) ended up where we've been ending up over the last month or so: listening to Maxwell. I had never found the spanish version of "Whenever, Wherever, Whatever" for wifey, so I went Googling for it - and happened upon a dope compilation of unreleased and rare tracks of his, including this Dilla remix of "Ascension" that I'd never heard before. I can't find concrete proof, but I'm hearing that this was put out on a maxi single at some point? Oddly enough, the worlds of music that my wife and I travel in don't always cross, so to have a remix that flips vibes that we both enjoy? I had to share.

Gripz Poetic Literature Mixtape |
Since, say, mid-June, I've been getting hit up on twitter by this MD spitter by the name of Gripz. Normally, that ish bothers me, mainly because I'd rather get tracks sent to me via email, but something about homey's consistent persistence piqued my interest. In speaking to him, I found out that he works at a fast pace, completing tracks daily, or so it seems. And this isn't like a rough draft - this is 3 verses, hooks, pretty much finished product. Over the last month or two, I've posted some leaks to his material, most of it coming from this mixtape, Poetic Literature, which is hosted by DJ Whiteowl, Anno Domini Records (Anno Domini produced a lot of these tracks) and DJ Heat. Throughout this tape, dude gives you bars. Bars bars bars. Bars for days, speaking on varying topics. The homey Wordsmith co-signed him (hell, he's featured on two tracks), which is a big look for a budding DMV spitter, and at being only 20 years old, I wonder how he will grow over the next couple of years...
See this as the perfect introduction to a budding MC from the Maryland area. And if you're digging this, know that Poetic Literature 2 is on the way!

RIP Mr. Magic |
Just saw Miss Info's post, which has a letter from DJ Premier confirming the death of the legendary Mr. Magic, who died today due to a heart attack. Newer Hip-Hop heads might not be up on Mr. Magic, but he's done a lot for getting Hip-Hop on major radio, from back in the day. He was down with Marley Marl back when BDP went at the Juice Crew, got shouted out by Biggie on "Juicy" (and by Nas on "Halftime") and was featured on Vice City's "Wildstyle" station as host. He was even a producer, crafting joints for acts like the Force MDs. Peep this interview with Magic and Mister Cee if you want to know about Hip-Hop.
He was a tastemaker, and legions of artists sent in tracks just to get Mr. Magic's approval on air - before payola, before platinum records, before boutique record labels, that radio respect was key, and Mr. Magic was the one who made or broke artists.
Hip-Hop has lost another legend. God's working on a SERIOUS club night/mixtape up there.
EDIT Spotted a treasure trove of dope Mr. Magic-related gems via Will C. (shouts to noz).

Breakage ft. Skream "Skreakage" |
Breakage ft. Skream "Skreakage": FACT graced the Internets this special treat from Breakage's Foundation album, which is set to drop early 2010 on Digital Soundboy. With all of the work Breakage has done outside of DnB, this collaboration is a must, and it comes off very well. It's not the earth-shattering bass you'd imagine, but a darker, electro-fueled excursion. That download link is only good for 7 days, so get on it!
I got to hear "Hard", taken from the "Run 'Em Out" remix single, and its the truth. They took Breakage's "Together" tune and had the Newham Generals go in on it. If you haven't heard it, I believe Zane Lowe is rinsing it.

Radius Etc... |
Oddly enough, I had been wondering what Radius was up to lately - love how he randomly hit me up like "eyo, I got the album". His new mini-album, Etc..., is rght up my alley. I'll let the man explain it to you"
Etc… is a mini album highly inspired by Hip Hop, Brokenbeat, Chicago House, Detroit Techno, Dub, Jazz, Soul etc, etc etc… progressive electronic reality music. Created mainly for the traveling individual, one that rides public transportation, or has to commute long distances for work, school etc… basically those constantly on the go, both mentally and physically
You can hear these influences from Track 1, "Kemetica", which layers some downtempo grooves inna dub-wise filter, and adds some really Jazzy elements to boot. He runs the gamut from House-y/techno vibes ("Cosmic Rush Hour", "Organics") to more hypnotic brokenbeat ("Get Me Outta This Place...") and other vibes, without going too far left from the overall mood of the project as a whole. I figured he had this in him when I peeped Neighborhood Suicide. Its good to hear a producer really experiment with their influences, and not for just one track, but for a full release.
If you're interested, you can cop one of the 50 limited-edition discs over at Gritty Goat. I believe a digital-download version is/will be available for you, too.
