PREX Celebrates 30 Years On Record Store Day

One of my favorite indie record shops, Princeton Record Exchange (right near Princeton Univ.), will be celebrating their 30th anniversary today, on Record Store Day. That's been my go-to spot since 1995 - I usually hit it up when I need some of that good EDM, or just rare Hip-Hop imports. The majority of the vinyl I own has come from that institution as well. I'll be there at some point today with the missus, as RSD hits during our anniversary weekend. Not sure what I'll be buying today (maybe the special 12" version of the Daedelus Righteous Fists Of Harmony EP), but I'm gonna cop something. Hit the jump for PREX's press release on this special occasion.

2010 marks the 30th year of the Princeton Record Exchange, one of the leading independent music and movie stores in the USA. We are happy to invite our fans, friends and families to join us in a weeklong celebration including live music, raffles with prizes awarded every day, scores of freebies and a huge amount of limited edition merchandise. The party begins on Saturday April 17 with the 3rd annual Record Store Day, and continues through the week, culminating on Saturday April 24 at Princeton’s Communiversity festival.

On Saturday the 17th, the Princeton Record Exchange (Prex) is pleased to present an afternoon of live music, in conjunction with the Princeton Public Library’s Earth Day Festival. The show goes on in Hines Plaza, next to the library on Witherspoon St. (a block from the store). Local favorites Chris Harford with His Band of Changes and Dinner (with Prex staff member Ben) will perform from 2:00 to 4:00 pm, with special guest Richard Barone (formerly of the Bongos) slated to play a few numbers in-between.

Also starting that day, Prex will be raffling away 8 days of prizes, starting small with T-Shirts and gift cards, ramping up to a USB turntable and a grand prize of BOTH the stereo and mono Beatles box sets (a $400 value!). These free raffle tickets will be available at the library concert and at the store throughout the week. Prex will have tons of free stuff, the bulk supplied by the folks who put together Record Store Day, the annual celebration of independent music stores. As of this writing not all details have been released, but past years have included sampler CDs and records, posters, stickers, turntable mats and more. Prex adds to this bounty our own 30th anniversary commemorative stickers and temporary tattoos, available throughout the week.

Last but not least, there are well over 150 limited edition titles released on record Store Day, distributed exclusively to independent music stores. Highlights include 7” singles from Elvis Costello, Elvis Presley, John Lennon, and Peter Gabriel; 10” singles from Bruce Springsteen, Fela, and the Gorillaz; 12” EPs/LPs from Flaming Lips, Phoenix, Pavement, and Muse; CDs from Ani DiFranco and Weezer, plus tons more.

For a massive (partial) list, download our Record Store Day Releases PDF. Quantities on most of these titles are extremely limited, so no promises. We have ordered heavy, but don’t know what we will receive. First come, first served only…please don’t call us ahead of time to try to reserve any titles. We want to be fair to everyone!

Hope you get a chance to come celebrate with us!

The Princeton Record Exchange is located at 20 S. Tulane St. in downtown Princeton, NJ. Follow us on Facebook and Twitter for more information as it becomes available.
