Help Kool Herc

I can forgive someone if they aren't up on Kool Herc. While dude is essentially the whole reason that breakbeats, rapping and breakdancing are integral parts of what we call Hip-Hop today, with the way history is told and retold, his proper credit might get lost in the footnotes (his Wikipedia page don't lie though). Word is Herc is currently seriously ill, and is without health insurance/the ability to pay for surgery. Herc's family is asking for donations to his medical fund, with both mailing addresses and PayPal being accepted. If you can spare it, please contribute to help Herc out!

Send donations to:

Kool Herc Productions
P.O. Box 20472

Or submit via PayPal to his sister at cindycampbell1@aol.com.

Featuring L.E.G.A.C.Y., Pt. 2

Glad this new mixtape from DJ Forge and L.E.G.A.C.Y. is out there. After the illness that was Part 1, it's great to hear Legs spit alongside cats like Chaundon, Skyzoo, Dirt Platoon, Soulogik and plenty more, featuring beats from 9th Wonder, Tom Delay, Khrysis and others. Legs is the proper star, IMO, but you know, this isn't no BS. Take a couple shots and dig deep, you smell me?

Cello Kid "Wake Up Music": I know it's kind of early, so instead of waking the neighbors up with some Mobb Deep or something, take it a lil calmer with this piano-lead banger from Cello Kid, who actually knows how to play the cello. He's dropping a mixtape, Forget Me Nots, which will be presented by Pretty Boys "r" Us Clothin Co. and hosted by Dj J-Mayy, and drops on February 13th. Some fly Midwest flex, seen? UllNevaNo "Horror Flick"

UllNevaNo "Horror Flick": If you recall, 2010 showcased a number of fine talents, including the boy UllNevaoNo. Gifted MC that he is, he dropped The Color Brown mixtape with RTD and UnderSound / Agio this past August, and in 2011, he has The Color Brown vol. 2 mixtape, which will be presented by BrickYoYaFace.com and Mixbulles.com. Expect that tape to drop this summer.

UllNeva says "Fans, and new cats that are just hearing about my music i really appreciate the support from you all, and i was sort of in between a rock and a hard place with choosing the next project for the color series, but since i've been receiving a great and huge response off the first "Color Brown" project over Kev Brown beats, i decided to do a part 2 over Apollo Brown beats, and his music is very inspiring as well as far as the way he chops samples, and soulfullness, so big shouts out to Mello Music Group for giving me their blessing into pursuing this project and hopefully ya'll enjoy whats yet to come for 2011 thank you all....".

The Electric "Overload"

The Electric "Overload": Crazy - never expected DJ Vadim to venture into this kind of Hip-Hop/dancefloor vibe, given his classic material like his "40 Winks" remix (which is a personal favorite of mine), but I guess I also never expected Pugs Atomz to venture into this vein as well. Oddly enough, this shit works. It's not groundbreaking, but you can move through the club, drink in hand, to shit like this. Their new mixtape, Hey You Guys, is dropping on the 10th of February, and will be hosted by DJ. Intel (and presented by DJ Booth / BamaLoveSoul). Fuck with that, then be on the lookout for their Life Is Moving LP.

Legit "Why You Can't Forget Me"

Legit "Why You Can't Forget Me": Might be late, but it's still a #NewShitSaturdays leak over here. Chitown's Legit flips this Black Keys-produced instrumental for Nicole Wray's "Why Can't I Forget Him", properly doing justice to this track, while being super Hip-Hop and making the shit about him. This beastly track will not be found on Coloring Outside The Lines, which makes me think that mixtape will feature some serious shit on it.

Curly Castro Winston's Appeal

After a day fu ll of toiling, Curly Castro has dropped his long-awaited album, Winston's Appeal, to the masses. Dude's moving into that lane that only shared by a few cats, like Elucid, Scripts N Screwz and other keepers of the future funk. Personifying the "ill" in Illadelph, Cas uses his life experience to sharpen the darts he places upon these beats. The sonic buffet is right up my alley, as he goes from skraight Hip-Hop to some other other. The homey Zilla Rocca makes numerous appearances on this, as do Ethel Cee, DJ Ambush, Jawnzap7 and others. I particularly love hearing Cas on tracks like "Flatbush & Church (Filthy Dub)", which not only has Cas beasting some dubwise riddim dem, but he's also describing and revisiting his yout. Seen? BTW, this is being presented by Three Dollar Pistol and Rock The Dub. Love that.

[trailer] Better Mus' Come

Three years in the making, "Better Mus' Come" captures the deep rooted conflict at the heart of Jamaican politics as seen in violent images in news reports and recent explosive political headlines all over the world in the international manhunt for alleged Jamaican "Don", Christopher "Dudus" Coke, leaving over 79 civilians dead and a government-mandated State of Emergency in its aftermath. In a timely and provocative production, "Better Mus' Come" traces the origins of the use of street gangs by political parties in their violent struggle to win the national election.

In this episode of the Combat Jack Show we had Sean Price come through as a guest host. Nothing short of hilarity. Where else are you gonna hear about Lil B, colonic irrigation, Jean-Claude “Baby Doc” Duvalier etc.? Shit, even Bonsu Thomson, the EIC of The Source, breezed through to see what all the fuss was about. Shouts out to BosNaud, JusDave and Maffew Ragazino who also came through and showed love. You want to know what Sean P has in store for 2011, or how he feels about Slaughterhouse, or him potentially being in a rap boy band, or the rumored Def Jam signing a few years ago when Jigga was at the helm? It’s all here and of course Sean P and Maffew spit some bars too! You know what to do...

Curly Castro ft. Verso, Burke, Raskull, the OneSunLion Ra, Unless, dj Ambush, Ethel Cee, Rokbottom, Law-1, Larry Guevara, JawnZap 7, Akilles, Zilla Rocca & L-TyrannicYou & Who’s Army”: Ever since I was a likkle yout, I always loved Philly. I’ve probably mentioned it before, but Trenton’s in between Philly and NYC, so we have two ABCs, NBCs, CBS, etc., one for NY and one for Philly. I stay close to Philly, and seeing the progression of their underground Hip-Hop culture is intense. I wanna take a weekend and build with some of the cats, but with the wealth of skills out there, I feel like I need to spend a few weeks! Curly Cas brings in a plethora of talented MCs on this one, from the mighty Zilla Rocca to the magnificent Ethel Cee, among others. Five Steez & DJ Ready Cee Momentum: Volume One

Jamaica meets classic Hip-Hop, no Kool Herc. Five Steez hails from Jamaica, and with a classic batch of instrumentals (which are expertly handled by DJ Ready Cee), Steeze gets loose over 18 tracks. Word is this is volume one of a three-part series, and I’m hoping we get to see more of both of these cats super quick. This cut is taken from his forthcoming Rap Phenomenon, and really feels like some super-hero shit. It also has him breaking down his cipher like a Ben Ulrich, reporting on the different super heroes in the field. Soulbrotha & Rukus "Starbreaker": Esbee and Ruk come back like they left something over a proper warning alarm/hammer banger track. The title isn’t just some kind of witty random word affixed to an MP3 – these two really dig into their views on what’s ailing the current state of the scene, in many facets. And they don’t mince words. And what’s better is their un-minced words fit along with what many of my peers feel. BLKHRTS BLK S BTFL

Jesus. I have no idea where the BLKHRTS idea came from, but I’m loving this vowel-devoid project from King Foe, Yonnas & Karma. There’s an ill sonic slant on this – there’s a feeling throughout most of this of really going “there”, keeping that fly Hip-Hop appeal but almost forcing oneself to channel the darker part of the heart and sitting in the muck, exploring what the fuck turns your mood black. Or BLK. This EP is for rainy days, or dark, cold nights, before a riot. I’d love to see these cuts performed live!

My WWE Raw Report (1/21/2011)

Yesterday afternoon, I saw a tweet from @Trentonian, saying they had free tickets to the WWE Raw World Tour show at the Sun National Bank Center last night; all one needed to do was hit their Facebook page with your favorite pro wrestling memory. Anyone who knows me knows I stay abreast to what's going on, but I've been a fan of the sport since I was three years old. I drew back and remembered this gem, and how I wrote a letter to the WWE about my support for the Hulkster, and received back a dope Hulk Hogan friendship bracelet. Needless to say, I won seats to the show, and was asked to take pictures and possibly write a report on the show. I did both, and not only has my report (in full) has been posted on the Trentonian's website, but a condensed version will be in tomorrow's paper! I have Joey Kulkin to thank - he even had some great words to say about my writing. Nice to get some recognition for my work - especially outside of the Hip-Hop/Drum & Bass circles. And I have to thank my wife, for if not for her nudging me on even entering the contest, none of this would've even happened.

With about one more week for Chase & Status' No More Idols album release, I have been surprised no leaks have come about as of yet. In talking with DJ Nappy, I'm also surprised this tune hasn't been rocked more. Combining the efforts of C&S and Sub Focus, we have a mixed bag here - you get one part mellow, guitar-driven vocal dubstep, and the second half comes with a NASTY riddim. One for the dancefloors - and the charts, I reckon. I believe their "Blind Faith" single drops on Monday, with No More Idols out on the 31st. At least, that's what I was told.

I ripped this from the 1Xtra Dubstep Takeover "Sound of Dubstep 2010" show.

Hearing this, it sounds so effortless - Wise transforms into his Djezuz Djonez guise and goes in, deep.
