OG Mattress Presents Rest Up 2013

I know a lot of you like to sleep on music. It happens. It's part of why I've done what I do, and why guys like HLLWY get along. If you're not already up on it, vibe to his Original Mattress site; it's the tits. They asked a number of tastemakers to list their top five most slept-on acts, and I gave him five producers I feel should be getting some shine. Kind of went in, too. You can see the full list of curators HERE, and my picks HERE. You can even submit your own!

The Combat Jack Show: The Buckshot, Smif n Wessun, Duck Down Episode

Via TheCombatJackShow: "Is a Duck Down event a sausage fest? Do they get chicks? It’s greater than that as Buck Shot, Tek and General Steel share their days of running with Tupac, how Duck Down almost signed Eminem, how Buck is doing way more than music and how he’s got the answers. They also speak on Hot 97 and share some choice words for program director Ebro Darden. Also, wifey Unbelievable Kim stops by and talks about her “controversial” classic song “Santa Claus Is A Black Man”."

Black Collar Biz - "Pick Up Ya Feet"

If you didn't make it to the Black Friday 2 release party in November, you don't own that disc. If you don't own that disc, you won't be ready for Black Collar Biz' High Grade Artistry. If you're not ready for High Grade Artistry, what are you really doing with your life? To attempt to get you back in order, I got back on mine and uploaded track #2 from the project, featuring BCB rocking over what should be a VERY familiar sample, coasting and roasting those who are... lackluster. Lots of gems thrown in here, and I'm hoping someone who might be wanting to make a change but don't know how can be invigorated by this one. If you're straggling? Pick ya feet up.

Daniel Joseph & Sol Zalez "Check The Box"

Daniel Joseph (or Espee to me because fuck that I'm old) and Sol Zalez go back; the Jersey artists have a history that goes back 17 years. Jokers are a part of the later development of the Jersey hip-hop scene, and to get a new tune from these two - even if it's "just a demo" is some shit you need to put your ears on... righ tnow.

Kanye West on Juan Epstein

This is pretty damn legendary. Props to Ciph and Rosenberg for finally getting Kanye West on Juan Ep.

Jaguar Skills x Virus Syndicate - "Karate Man"

Proper hip-hop from across the pond. The "karate man" drop in this (taken from Trading Places) might be the best shit ever. The flipping of all of the different styles in here by Jaguar keeps the Syndicate on their toes, and is one of the most fun EP's I've heard in a minute.

Joey Dynomite - "The Jungle"

It's legit been two years since I first heard this track, and I'm finally hearing it in full for the first time. The first time I saw Joey rock live, he performed this. Been waiting for this ever since. Word is he has an album on the way, and I can only hope that a) this track is on it and b) it sounds as dope as "The Jungle!"

The Combat Jack Show: The Ebro Darden Episode, Part Deaux

Via TheCombatJackShow: "The Combat Jack show once again occupied the Hot 97 portal to break bread with our friend Ebro Darden of Hot 97 fame. You know every once and a while we gotta sit down with the head honcho to have “that” conversation. We talked NYC hip hop, the state of radio, his ever growing personality and more. Want to know if Hot 97 can be the home of The Combat Jack Show? Put down that daddy yak, grab some D’usse listen to this hardbody episode."

Side-B Radio Interview (11/24/2013)

Hopefully you're tuning into Side-B Radio with the homey Phil Jackson WPRB Sunday nights, 5PM to 7PM. Phil puts on for Jersey, and the hip-hop world in general, and I respect the hell out of the work he puts in. It's not often that I get interviewed, but when he hit me up to come on the show and speak about what I do, I had to talk with him. It's not crazy long, but I got to speak about RTD and a few things we have going on, what's GONE on, and some of the stuff I've been doing with Complex. Big up to Phil always, and I'm hoping that 2014 can see us put some of these wheels into motion.

And for those paying attention, here's the promo for Black Friday 2:

Black Collar Biz - "Black Friday 2" Fundraiser / Release Party (11/29/2013)

In late 2011, RTD helped Black Collar Biz release Black Friday, the prelude to his intense Forever Black project. This year, on Black Friday, we're doing it again. Black Friday #2 will feature a grip of tracks from Biz, many of which I've not even heard before, and on Black Friday 2013 (November 29, 2013), there will be a tour fundraiser / release party that will feature live performances, the premiere of the "One Love" video, an art auction, body painting, a sneak peak at HGA, a photo booth, and more! #10 minimum contribution gets you in the door (and a copy of Black Friday); $15 gets you both mixtapes, and a $30 contribution gets you both mixtapes and an HGA t-shirt. This all goes down at 3 S. Broad Street in Trenton. You already know. Full details over on Facebook.

Skrewtape - Skumbag Millionaires

Read more » | No Comments »

An unexpected thing happened when I hit the 2013 Jersey Fresh Jam, Skrewtape gave me a copy of Skumbag Millionaires. Seriously, there's a picture to prove that this finally exists. See, if you know Skrew, you know that he's everywhere. Dude's got a great balance of being fun-loving and cracking jokes, but when that crispy instrumental drops, he turns into an animal. Put a mic in his hand and its a wrap. Those two sides mean that he makes a lot of friends and acquaintances, and on Skumbag Millionaires, Skrew made sure that his hip-hop opus featured a sick line-up of some of Jersey's finest spitters and producers. That said, it makes sense that it's been roughly two years since the time I first heard about this project and when it literally hit my hands.

The Combat Jack Show: Marc Ecko

Via TheCombatJackShow: "Marc Ecko walks us through his extraordinary journey, how he came up from being a naive Hip Hop fan to becoming a household name, his run with Diddy, why Bobby Condors has him scared to blow trees today, the Barry Bonds baseball thing, why the education system has him mad and why you should run cop his book ‘Unlabel: Selling You Without Selling Out’. He’s not Che Guevara with bling on, but he’s Complex."

Tribute, J.Period & NaS: Best of NaS) were this week’s guests where we chopped about being white and aware of white privilege, whether no graffiti on the NYC transit lines is a good or bad thing, Mansbach teaming up with Sam Jackson, J.Period becoming music supervisor to the Brooklyn Nets, whether there’s really hope for a true post-racial America and more. Smart talk, no filler. Let’s go."

Tone Liv & Vincent Price - Late Nights With Da Mayor

If you know anything about rockthedub, you know that we rep for Jersey. Have to - if not us, then who?! Tone Liv has been a homey of the site for years now, and it's always love when he has new material on deck. Been waiting for the chance to drop something exclusive from the god, and I'm glad it's this project; a straight up Green Llamas reunion, with Tone linking with Vincent Price for some real motherfucking hip-hop. Raw samples, dope rhymes, tallcans on deck. You already know what time it is! If you love quality beats, this project's got you. If you need some slick spit that's drenched in that real life? This is all you. Soundtrack your drunken weekend to this. Shouts to Krissy for the artwork as well.

The Combat Jack Show: Big Daddy Kane

Via TheCombatJackShow: "King Asiatic Nobody’s Equal. It’s not every day we get to sit with a legend. Kane goes deep with his history, what he thinks about Mr. Cee, how he produced the majority of ‘Long Live The Kane’ with no credits, how Doug E Fresh taught him how to rock the crowd, how some cats from The Juice Crew wasn’t fuxin with him, how he really wanted to battle KRS-One, what Madonna smells like, how he shopped a young Jay Z with no success, why he started wearing purple silks and such… This one is a marathon, but with Kane, ain’t no half steppin’."

Rich Quick - "Sad Songz" EP [preview]

Read more » | No Comments »

Back in November of 2012, we put you on to Rich Quick's Sad Songz EP (which is out on August 20 via Ben Frank Recordings), which was a true departure for the NJ/Philly spitter. He's been everything from that boy on the stoop to that king in the cipher, and this feels like he's trying to show more of the man behind the sunglasses, cassette tape, and skully. He's not totally becoming "alternative," just bearing more his soul.

The Combat Jack Show: Spike Lee

Via TheCombatJackShow: "Spike Lee talks about the controversy behind his Kickstarter campaign, the ills of gentrification in his beloved Brooklyn, his relationship with Mike Tyson, why Halle Berry is the actor he’s most proud of putting on, why he still hasn’t seen ‘Django Unchained’, his instrumental role in making Jordans the hottest sneaker ever made, what ever happened to Matty Rich, why Michael Jordan now wears mom jeans, how his movies (like his upcoming ‘Old Boy’) is getting bloodier, and a whole lot of other ish. It’s easy to take this man for granted, but looking at the impact he’s had on our culture, we gotta do the right thing and give Mars Blackmon his props.

Rich Quick - "Happy I'm Here"

It was great seeing the homey Rich Quick at the Jersey Fresh Jam this weekend, but I felt bad because this single had been sitting in my inbox for a minute (well, a few days, but you know how I do). Produced by NJ Hip-Hop veteran Shawn Lov, Rich does what he does best: Keeping it real without keeping it sweet'n'low. Dude is genuinely positive, but nothing is pussy about him at all. One of the more stand-up dudes in the NJ hip-hop scene, it's great to have MCs like him in the area. Grab this for free, and hold tight for the Sad Songz EP, which I'll be previewing in a few days. #LoveLife

Jersey Fresh Jam 2013: The Aftermath

Read more » | No Comments »

I know, I know, yesterday I said I'd be doing my live-blogging dean. There was something about the Wifi out there, and just wanting to EXPERIENCE, that had me not sitting at my laptop for the duration of yesterday's Jersey Fresh Jam 2013. And I'm glad I didn't.

See, some experiences aren't experiences until they're experienced. Being able to be with my people, taking in the sights and sounds of another Jersey Fresh Jam? You can't put it into words. It's just an amazing time with a creative group of amazing New Jerseyans. From all of the talented graffiti artists (who did everything from painting Hunter S. Thompson to Game of Thrones characters) to the talented acts like Black Collar Biz and the Blackout Kings, Molly Rhythm, Skrewtape (who hit me with a copy of his Skumbag Millionaires album), DEMO, and many others getting on the stage and showing the enormous talent that's housed within the 609 area code. I didn't get to build with EVERYONE I wanted to, but that's for another time. There's just something in the air when NJ hip-hop family gets together.

I won't take too much of your time; I'll let these pictures do the talking. Here is my collection of shots from the Jam, as well as the awesome pics from V2Gphotography (whattup, Venomous?!?!). After the jump, I have (Blackberry) video from the Black Collar Biz and Biz Mighty performances. If I see more, I'll post more. UPDATE Here's the Trentonian's piece on the Jam.

Yeah, it's that time again. The 2013 edition of the Jersey Fresh Jam is underway right... now. Head over to Terracycle at 121 New York Ave in Trenton, as the fam is out there doing the damn thing. You've got the best graffiti artists in Jersey, but there are cats coming from all over - this is a DESTINATION SPOT for graffiti writers, and one of the premiere Hip-Hop festivals in the area.

He also talks about his lifelong love for comic books and how he’s about to publish his own under his Darryl Makes Comics company. This interview is guaranteed tougher than leather.
