Mister Cee On Juan Epstein (Part 2)

If you missed Part 1, I'd say go back and listen to that before digging into this new episode. "Whoa hey! Mister Cee came back for part 2 and this one was SOMETHING ELSE! Cee chronicles Biggie’s entire career in a true retrospective. You are very welcome….."

DJ Big Jacks - OG Recipe

Because everyone needs a sick mix of original samples. Shouts to Emily Oberg for sending this one over.

DJ Taye - "Reminisce"

DJ Taye dropped a PERFECT tribute to DJ Rashad.

DJ Tre also dropped a new one today:

Perez Released A Touching DJ Rashad Tribute Mix

I'll be spending a good while vibing out to DJ Rashad's material. Hell, it doesn't feel like it's been a year since I lamented for the footwork general. For heads who might not be up on what Rashad did before he really started to bubble, Barcelona's Perez dropped this tribute mix full of Rashad bits, primarily shit from his earlier stages. Really ill mix.

Rock to this set, and be sure to grab Machinedrum's Movin' Forward compilation, as well as that new TEKLIFE t-shirt; proceeds from both of those purchases go to Rashad's family.

Roska - "King Kunta (Roska Edit)"

That thing where I wasn't into the original, but I'm loving what Roska did with it.

Agallah Don Bishop ft. Ras Kass - "Rolling Stoned"

This is the kind of real spit that will put me in the zone when I'm in the zone, if you know what I mean.

Dirt Disciples - "Heartless"

Dirt Disciples = Rome Clientel x DJ Concept. Their next project will be out sooner than you think.

Lyle Horowitz - Psychotic Breaks

Lyle Horowitz took it back to the samples and breakbeats for his latest LP, and brought some friends along:

"Psychotic Breaks is not a reference to any sort of mental health issue or manic episode. I feel compelled to mention that because people are worried about me. I'm okay. Actually, I'm a little better than okay. Psychotic Breaks means something different within the context of this album. Psychotic is a reference to the style of sample chopping I'm doing throughout this album. Breaks is a reference to break-beats, the foundation of every beat I made during these sessions. Together, you have manic and sometimes discordant samples paired with some vintage break-beats. The record features appearances from Uncommon Nasa, Curly Castro, Pizza Boy, Blahzé Misfits, Virginia Slim, Melvin Burch, Andrew Frisby & DJ Mark Gayeski."

Open Mike Eagle - "Celebrity Reduction Prayer"

OME produced by Oddisee? Blessings. Taken from Open Mike Eagle's Persona.

Ta-ku ft. JMSN & Sango - "Love Again"

Here's a gem from Ta-ku alongside JMSN and Sango. Kind of wish more R&B-ish material sounded like this. "Love Again" is taken from Songs To Make Up To, which is due out on June 12 via Future Classic / Fool's Gold, which is a fucking glorious combination if I've ever heard one.

Machinedrum Releases DJ Rashad Tribute EP

This Sunday, it'll be one year since the footwork community lost one of it's pioneers; DJ Rashad's gone WAY too soon, but he'll never be forgotten. Today, Machinedrum—a producer who's worked with and been influenced by Rashad—released Movin' Forward, a five-track EP of material that features three Rashad productions (including a tune Machinedrum and Nick Hook produced with Rashad, "Understand"). You can cop it right now, and should; just like Hyperdub's Next Life compilation, proceeds from the release will go to Rashad's family.

Dej Loaf - "Try Me (Cousin Cole Reggae Mix)"

I remember falling in love with "Try Me" a little late, and then being surprised that producers and DJs weren't doing it justice on the remix tip (save for Nick Catchdubs and R3ll, obviously). Today, Cousin Cole dropped his splendid reggae mix of "Try Me," which borrows a FIRE riddim that all dancehall fans should be aware of. It works, and wins.

MoSS ft. AZ, DJ Premier, and Joe Budden - "Started"

Something about those drums! This is kind of tough, but might take some of you a bit to really feel.

Tuesday, April 21, 2015

De La Soul ft. Nas - "God It"

Kind of surprised this happened. Kind of surprised it sounds this way. Not mad, just wish it was something else. #shrug

Superfly Ky - "Shang Tsung"

This is the kind of shit you'd think I wouldn't fuck with, but yes, I do. It's funny; I'm pretty sure someone mentioned this guy's name in a meeting yesterday. I'd never heard of him... so of COURSE I get a promo email with Superfly Ky in it.

I can't be mad at the Bronx-based rapper dropping a Mortal Kombat reference to describe some girl's head game, then his first bar is about looking like "Randy Savage in the interview." Also love that the promo calls this tune "infectious," which is a word I'd use. I'm done, and I'm turnt.

Hucci - "Montana"

Kind of surprised Hucci hasn't blown on his own. He probably will, some day, but I figured he would've been reaping the benefits of US rappers wanting his murky rhythms. His latest, "Montana," flips some random Young Thug lines over a twisted, beautiful melody. Chunky tunes. Turn up!

And if you want more Hucci, grab his 404 release.

Nemo Achida - "Rage Tat"

Corey Grand doing beats for Nemo Achida? So not mad at this.

Arnette Eyewear Presents: Legrowlize It! Vol. III by A-Plus

Apparently these are " the perfect tunes to roll up and vibe out to." I'm not mad at that. For those of you trying to get your late-night 4/20 on. Enjoy.

RJD2 x STS - "420"

Just in case you needed a 4/20 anthem... although everyday is 4/20, apparently.

(Complex)

Mike G - "Guess Who (Not Playing At All)"

I was waiting for the full beat from Slick Rick's "Hey Young World" to drop during the entirety of this "Dreams"-esque cut from OFWGKTA's Mike G.

Blitz The Ambassador - "JuJu Girl"

We brought you the track earlier this month, with promises of a video. You're welcome.

ESTA. Gives Away Remix EP, "etc"

With so much noise being given to the Soulection crew, it's dope to see the producers throwing out their gems without the need for the machine. ESTA. is a name I've been checking for, primarily because–similar to someone like Kaytranada–ESTA. is known for blending hip-hop and more groovy bits into his cipher. etc is a six-track remix EP, showing the producer getting busy with songs from Kehlani, Kali Uchis, and others... for free whatever you want to pay.

If you're trying to get lit with bae for 4/20, this might be the best medicine.

Run The Jewels ft. SL Jones - "Bust No Moves"

Of course I hit up Princeton Record Exchange on Record Store Day to cop the second Run The Jewels album and didn't realize that they dropped a special Record Store Day 12" that featured a cut that wasn't on the second album, "Bust No Moves," as well as "Blockbuster Night, Part 2."

S-Type Dropped A Sick Mix For Triple J Exclusives

S-Type really did the damn this on this set. It's low on his material, but he makes sure to include cuts from Inkke, Kevin Gates and Rustie, Shash'U, DJ Rashad, and plenty of others. Pre-game to this.

T.H.E.M. – “Song For You”

Great to see these Houston boys getting their due. If you're rocking with this, cop their Nonpareil album.

(Okayplayer)

A Tribe Called Quest "People’s Instinctive Travels & the Paths of Rhythm" 25th Anniversary Mixtape

Perfect Saturday listening, courtesy of Chris Read: "To mark the twentieth anniversary of People’s Instinctive Travels & the Paths of Rhythm, our buddy Chris Read has put together a sweet mixtape for Wax Poetics and WhoSampled. Delving into the album’s DNA, the mix includes original sample material from the likes of Roy Ayers, Lou Reed, Carly Simon, the Isley Brothers, Earth, Wind & Fire, and RAMP, all to celebrate the genius of such a special record."

Tyler, the Creator ft. Kali Uchis - "Yellow"

Cherry Bomb's been out digitally, but it looks like those physical copies are on the way soon, and this collaboration between Tyler and Kali Uchis is said to be the CD bonus track. This is for those of you who wanted to hear Tyler and Kali sing a duet.

(MissInfo)

Big Dope P - "Hit Da Blokk (Rustie Remix)"

If you're trying to understand that futuristic turn up, you need to get up on producers like Rustie. His remix game is impeccable, and his flip of Big Dope P's "Hit Da Blokk" is pure beast mode. Throw this one on—loud—and transport to your magical place.

Big Dope P's Hit Da Blokk EP also features remixes from DJ Earl, Ikonika, and Tim Dolla. You'll be able to grab this release on April 20. Check out the Rustie remix, as well as another cut, "Ibogance," down below.

INTERLUDE 029: Sirr Tmo

I love how these TEKLIFE cats are so into drum & bass that they'll do shit like start off a footwork mix with a slowed down Dillinja cut that most dnb purists turn their nose up at. Lucky for me, I'm a huge Dillinja fan, and doing shit like pitching down "Thugged Out Bitch" is right up my alley.

Sirr Tmo had a beaut on the Next Life compilation, and he shows off a grip of his tunes, as well as bits from Earl, Rashad, and Manny. Fire.

Oddisee - "Belong To The World"

An ill freebie from Oddisee's The Good Fight, which drops this May. Go fly a plane to this one.

Christian Rich ft. Vince Staples & Bia - "High"

Christian Rich has been on my radar for a minute, and it looks like their last year or so has seen them step their game all the way up. Heads might be more into the shit they've done for Childish Gambino, but you should also check out this Kate Boy rework; trust. For now, they linked with Vince Staples and Bia for this hook-less piece of turn up. All trap elbows everything.

Illa J - "Strippers"

Dilla's younger brother over a beat produced by Kaytranada? 2015 is amazing. Looks like this is taken from Illa J's self-titled solo album, which is due out this fall.

Wednesday, April 15, 2015

Esohel and DJ Poor Link Up For "Dopamine"

This is a heater. Dope to hear two artists get together and take it back to the essence. You might remember "Authentic." This project has a number of fierce cuts on it.

Monday, April 13, 2015

Boogie - "Oh My"

I'll keep it a buck; I don't know Boogie from Adam. I hear Kendrick bigs him up, and that he dropped a tape (Thirst 48) last summer. Fuck all that for a second, this cut "Oh My"—which was produced by Jahlil Beats—has me open. One of my Complex compadres put me onto it, and I have had it on repeat ever since. When I'm done trying to break down multis and intricate rhyme patterns, I want something that just hits me immediately. And dude can spit... plus you feel him. This shit is raw as FUCK, and is the perfect song to kick off this summer, trust.

The Oral History of Tanya Morgan

It's been a minute since we've hit you with an episode of Donwill's Bad With Names podcast, and while the rest are just as dope, I wanted to make sure you got up on the latest edition, which features an oral history of one of my favorite groups, Tanya Morgan:

"During the last days of our stay in the Bay area Tanya Morgan checked in with who could easily be considered one of the most important people in their careers, Dominic Del Bene. He's currently serving as Rooftop Comedy's Director of Production so unless you are a comedian his name may not ring bells but had it not been for him releasing their debut album Moonlighting you may have not heard of the group at all. In this episode we are given a brief oral history of Tanya Morgan and Loud Minority Music, the label that started it all."

RJD2 x STS - "Hold on Here It Go"

STS is one of the success stories I'm glad to have been on early on. Word is he has a full album with acclaimed producer RJD2 that's set to drop in May. This feels like the gospel.

Buck 65 - Dirtbike 4

It's been forever since I've heard new Buck 65. That's on me. Hell, his "I'm the least jiggy and the most no frills" has been the motto I've ran this site on for years. Dope to hear a new 61-minute project that reminds me of the weeded out days I used to spend rocking with his shit. Here's some more info on the project:

"An hour of extreme self-indulgence by the old Canadian. Jorun Bombay made the beat for the "don't wanna live here anymore" song. Deepstar made the beat for the "love, she said" song. Colleen Brown added a few musical and vocal touches here and there. But otherwise, all beats, rhymes and cuts were done by me, the legendary Buck 65. This is my favorite way to make music. It makes me feel like an outlaw. There will be more."

Boom Blake ft. Ill Kayn - "Jus Flexxin"

This is the kind of shit you throw on when your outfit is right and you're getting right before hitting the town with the squad. Freebie from the homeboy Boom Blake.

Michael Christmas - "ADHD"

Like the man says, this is the kind of shit you throw on when you think about niggas hating. Not on some "why they hatin'" shit, but more on the "LOL HATERS GON HATE, LET ME DO ME." Also, Michael Christmas is a fire name.

Butch Dawson - "Goin' Back"

Now THIS is what I needed today. A rapper I have no idea about spitting shit over a turnt beat in a very simple video. Shouts to HLLWY at OG Mattress for looking out; if you fuck with this track, grab the free EP, SSX DAWSON.

Codes Dropped a Gem of a Guest Mix on Sway In The Morning

Most people know of Brooklyn's Codes because of his throwback, hip-hop-infused house sound (which he's dubbed "Brooklyn Bounce"). This morning, he hit Shade 45 to drop a fresh guest mix on Sway In The Morning, and dipped into a grip of hip-hop classics, as well as dipping into the more dance music-oriented sounds that he rocks with.

If you fuck with his original work, be on the look out for his Brooklyn Bounce remix LP.

Marley Marl on Juan Epstein, Part 2

If you haven't heard the first part of this interview, hit up Boiler Room. Ciph and Rosenberg were in Marley Marl's famous House of Hits to chat with the god: "The legend is back...this time he's playing us rarities ...."

Curly Castro ft. Has-Lo, Dewey Decibel, Davd Little, PremRock, & Zilla Rocca - "Rammellzeed"

Curly, Has, and Zilla are a Philly trifecta I've not heard from in a little bit, so it's dope to hear them alongside a number of capable MCs over some fire funk from Fakts One, taken from Restroy & Debuild, which is set to drop on April 21. Proper "get ready for the weekend" ish.

Tyler, the Creator - "Fucking Young"

Overnight, Tyler, the Creator announced that he's dropping a new album... next week. Only a few weeks after Earl Sweatshirt dropped an album I can't stop listening to, it's dope to see ANOTHER OF guy doing the damn thing (especially when word of Frank Ocean finally dropping a new project). Word is the album will feature Lil Wayne, Kanye West, and a host of other names.

The question is, will you fucks with Cherry Bomb?

Check out the video for "Fucking Young," as well as another album cut, "DEATHCAMP."

Black Collar Biz - "Start It!!"

Collar went HAM over one of my favorite Public Enemy instrumentals. Food for thought.

Rich Quick - "On My Shoulderz"

Over a funky headnodder from STANKFOOT, the homey Rich Quick keeps things so honest. It's definitely on some conversational steeze, pouring his mind onto the crispy drums. This is the second single from Quick's forthcoming EP The Everywhere Man, which is dropping for free this spring.

And for those of you in the tri-state area, Rich Quick is going to be performing at the Mill Hill Basement on April 17 on a bill that also features Skrewtape, Black Collar Biz, and many more.

Them Jeans Chops and Screws His Second "In My Jeans" Mix

Not that we condone the sipping of syrup, but if that's your hype (or you just appreciated the style that DJ Screw brought to the world), peep Them Jeans' latest mix, which finds him chopping & screwing new material from Drake, Big Sean, Rihanna, Brodinski, and others. I fucked with this much more than I thought I would, and was surprised that Them Jeans—a producer I usually expect to drop some house gems—went down this lane.

Freddie Gibbs & KAYTRANADA - "My Dope House"

While I know that many first heard of Kaytranada from his hybrid electronic bangers—which teeter on the edge of funky house jams and subdued trap-esque numbers—working with certified spitters like Freddie Gibbs is where Kaytra wants to be. Word is "My Dope House" drops in May digitally and on a limited 7".

Monday, April 06, 2015

Nappy DJ Needles Dropped a Fresh Mixtape for Cornerstone

Nappy DJ Needles (aka the man behind these two fire blends) returns with a huge mixtape, chock full of jams by Earl Sweatshirt, Lyfestile, Flatbush Zombies, Rockwell Knuckles, Tef Poe, and many, many more.

Watch Mos Def Cover MF Doom Tracks

I remember watching a video from years back about how much of a DOOM fan Mos Def was. Pissed I haven't seen this until now, big up FACT.

Friday, April 03, 2015

Georgia Anne Muldrow - "Ankles"

Kind of crazy... this cut "Ankles," which is so perfect for the springtime puppy lovers out there, is the first glimpse at Georgia Anne Muldrow's first all-rap album, A Thoughtiverse Unmarred, which drops on May 19 via Mello Music Group. She really lets loose, occupying that space that made me love artists like Jill Scott years back. Something to cuddle and chill with your lover to during the warm evenings on a swing or some shit.

J-Zone - "Time For A Crime Wave"

While J-Zone might be more known these days for the drum licks he plays, he's still a dynamo when he has an idea, a pen and a pad. On his latest split 7" release (where he drops a fire song and a fire instrumental), Zone and Chief Chinchilla call "for the return of squeegeemen on the streets of NYC and Joe Clark-baseball bat order in the music biz." Rock that, then peep the bonus instrumental, "I Smell Smoke."

Blitz The Ambassador - "JuJu Girl"

Loving what Blitz is doing with this one. The live instrument feel on this is so damn lush. Word is a video for "JuJu Girl" is set to drop some time soon.

Jordan - "I'm Back"

Feels like it's been FOREVER since I've heard new material from The Jake, so it's always a treat to hear what he's working on. This is a teaser for Jordan's Jordan Rules project, which is said to drop this summer.

Tone Liv - "There I Go"

I know, I know, I already laced you with a Tone Liv gem, but he hit me with this unreleased, Rokem Beats-produced banger that I had to share. Crack open a tall can and get hype.
