Machinedrum Releases DJ Rashad Tribute EP

This Sunday, it'll be one year since the footwork community lost one of it's pioneers; DJ Rashad's gone WAY too soon, but he'll never be forgotten. Today, Machinedrum—a producer who's worked with and been influenced by Rashad—released Movin' Forward, a five-track EP of material that features three Rashad productions (including a tune Machinedrum and Nick Hook produced with Rashad, "Understand"). You can cop it right now, and should; just like Hyperdub's Next Life compilation, proceeds from the release will go to Rashad's family.

Dej Loaf - "Try Me (Cousin Cole Reggae Mix)"

I remember falling in love with "Try Me" a little late, and then being surprised that producers and DJs weren't doing it justice on the remix tip (save for Nick Catchdubs and R3ll, obviously). Today, Cousin Cole dropped his splendid reggae mix of "Try Me," which borrows a FIRE riddim that all dancehall fans should be aware of. It works, and wins.

This is the kind of shit you'd think I wouldn't fuck with, but yes, I do. It's funny; I'm pretty sure someone mentioned this guy's name in a meeting yesterday. I'd never heard of him... so of COURSE I get a promo email with Superfly Ky in it.

I can't be mad at the Bronx-based rapper dropping a Mortal Kombat reference to describe some girl's head game, then his first bar is about looking like "Randy Savage in the interview." Also love that the promo calls this tune "infectious," which is a word I'd use. I'm done, and I'm turnt.

Hucci - "Montana"

Kind of surprised Hucci hasn't blown on his own. He probably will, some day, but I figured he would've been reaping the benefits of US rappers wanting his murky rhythms. His latest, "Montana," flips some random Young Thug lines over a twisted, beautiful melody. Chunky tunes. Turn up!

ESTA. is a name I've been checking for, primarily because–similar to someone like Kaytranada–ESTA. is known for blending hip-hop and more groovy bits into his cipher. etc is a six-track remix EP, showing the producer getting busy with songs from Kehlani, Kali Uchis, and others... for free whatever you want to pay.

If you're trying to get lit with bae for 4/20, this might be the best medicine.

Boogie - "Oh My"

I'll keep it a buck; I don't know Boogie from Adam. I hear Kendrick bigs him up, and that he dropped a tape (Thirst 48) last summer. Fuck all that for a second, this cut "Oh My"—which was produced by Jahlil Beats—has me open. One of my Complex compadres put me onto it, and I have had it on repeat ever since. When I'm done trying to break down multis and intricate rhyme patterns, I want something that just hits me immediately. And dude can spit... plus you feel him. This shit is raw as FUCK, and is the perfect song to kick off this summer, trust.

The Oral History of Tanya Morgan

It's been a minute since we've hit you with an episode of Donwill's Bad With Names podcast, and while the rest are just as dope, I wanted to make sure you got up on the latest edition, which features an oral history of one of my favorite groups, Tanya Morgan:

It's been forever since I've heard new Buck 65. That's on me. Hell, his "I'm the least jiggy and the most no frills" has been the motto I've ran this site on for years. Dope to hear a new 61-minute project that reminds me of the weeded out days I used to spend rocking with his shit. Here's some more info on the project:

"An hour of extreme self-indulgence by the old Canadian. Jorun Bombay made the beat for the "don't wanna live here anymore" song. Deepstar made the beat for the "love, she said" song. Colleen Brown added a few musical and vocal touches here and there. But otherwise, all beats, rhymes and cuts were done by me, the legendary Buck 65. This is my favorite way to make music. It makes me feel like an outlaw. There will be more."

Codes Dropped a Gem of a Guest Mix on Sway In The Morning

Most people know of Brooklyn's Codes because of his throwback, hip-hop-infused house sound (which he's dubbed "Brooklyn Bounce"). This morning, he hit Shade 45 to drop a fresh guest mix on Sway In The Morning, and dipped into a grip of hip-hop classics, as well as dipping into the more dance music-oriented sounds that he rocks with.

Word is the album will feature Lil Wayne, Kanye West, and a host of other names.
