5 Releases You Need to Buy On Record Store Day 2017

Saturday, April 22, 2017 marks the 10th annual Record Store Day, which is celebrated by hitting your local independent record store and actually buying music. It's a novel idea, but if we want these mom & pop spots to stay in business, we need to frequent their businesses, you smell me?

As I did with the Black Friday Record Store Day 2016 releases, we wanted to help you diggers out there with a quick look at some of the hip-hop-related releases out there. We have everything from a classic song being turned into a children's book to an iconic soundtrack getting a vinyl release. Stones Throw Kicks Off Their Subscription Series With Unreleased Jaylib

Now this is great news! Today, Stones Throw announced that for the lovely price of $250, you get one year of Stones Throw vinyl releases. "This includes single albums, double albums, 12-inch singles, 45s, box sets, and special edition reissues," they said. The first release? Madlib and J Dilla's Jaylib remixes, which is getting it's first vinyl release ever. To sweeten that release, the previously-unreleased cut "Da Rawkus" will be featured; word is this banger was recorded in Los Angeles and Detroit in 2002.

J Dilla's 'Back To The Crib' Mixtape is the Perfect Road Trip Soundtrack

This is something truly special. To celebrate the 10th anniversary re-release of J Dilla's The Shining, BBE co-founder Peter Adarkwah shared a mixtape that J Dilla personally made him back in late 1999/early 2000. As he put it, "this tape was playing in the car. I recall Think Twice was on the tape and I suggested there and then that he do a cover with Erykah for the BBE album. We didn't get the Erykah feature, but people sure remember James' cover. We drove past a sign, it said Welcome To Detroit and I suggested that would be a good name for the album. When we pulled over James gave me the tape and said this is yours, or words to effect."

This is the tape; 46+ minutes of the kind of gems you'd expect from hanging with Dilla, including material from Cameo, Donald Byrd, Michael Jackson, and so many others. Perfect late summer soundtrack.

The Perfect Mixtape For When You Need to Say "Fuck The Police"

I won't front; I was really about to make another mix featuring some true "fuck the police" tracks, but realize that I've already kind of done that...twice. Shouts to the Passion of the Weiss crew, who put together this Fuck The Police Tape, which is tracks featuring nothing but middle fingers at the law.
