i haven't forgotten about you, true believer...i just haven't had the time. from the quiet death of a podcast that i spent most of 2020 cultivating to the quiet rebirth of another podcast i spent 2020 nurturing, to all of the insanity of what 2020 was, sometimes it was hard to find the time to really WRITE about stuff that doesn't keep the lights on. hell, i even started and stopped a whole different site that i'm itching to carve out more time for. this post isn't about any of that, though.

normal end-of-year traditions usually incorporate two things: DJ Cable's best-of hip-hop megamixes and Cousin Cole's New Year's Day mix. Cable's 2020 AD is actually going to be his final year-end hip-hop mix, which is sad but understandable; dropping 124-track mixes is fucking time consuming! You can download this mix and show him mad love for keeping it going.

Cousin Cole always comes correct with the New Year's Day selections. They are more chill, much more spiritual, and should help you enter the year on a cooler vibe than you went out. And with word of DOOM passing away hitting on Dec. 31, 2020, maybe this is the energy we need to keep going.

The Cause Drops His Flip of Teyana Taylor's "We Got Love"

It's been over a year since we got new material from The Cause, so it's dope to not only get some fire from him, but fire that is helping manifest the right energy we need for the new year. Something about this Teyana Taylor cut inspired Cause enough to get in the studio, come up with his own loop, record his bars, then mix the cut down himself. Sounds like that anthemic determination to me.

DJ Cable Drops 100+ Song '2019 AD' Mixtape

I don't know about you, but one mix I always look out for at the top (or bottom) of a year is DJ Cable's annual "AD" mixes, which run through the realm of hip-hop throughout the calendar year. For 2019 AD, Cable drops over 100 songs in this massive three-hour-and-37-minute mix, giving you the full scope of 2019 in rap, from Benny the Butcher to DaBaby.

"Whilst it wasn't the best of years for club joints," Cable said when sending this one over, "there's been so much exciting music coming from the underground." He also makes sure to know that you can "expect the usual bangers, UK sounds, weirdo rap, backpack selections, and even Australian Drill." I'm not sure I've even heard Australian Drill music. The Teklife Crew Kicks Off 2020 With a New 'TEKLIFE VIP' Compilation

After all of the holiday jazz about gifts and resolutions, there are certain traditions this time of year that I can't wait for. One of them is the TEKLIFE crew's yearly VIP compilation full of bangers from their heaviest hitters. Overnight, they unleashed the 2020 version, which features 17 footwork bangers from everyone, from DJ Spinn to Traxman. For what it's worth, I'd say hit up Gant-Man's Public Enemy flip. He DID that.

DJ Jazzy Jeff and MICK Soundtrack Your Summer With 'Summertime 10'

Usually, once I see something like DJ Jazzy Jeff and MICK's Summertime 10 (which in the tenth installment of their annual summer-themed mixtape series), I end up posting it as I'm diving into it. Like it or not, they are dope, and I can guarantee satisfaction just by perusing the journey in the tracklist. This year, it's a bit different; I was actually at my mom's during a Fourth of July cookout when this dropped. Heavee Gives Away Gunna Edit [Free Download]

After dropping one of my favorite albums of 2018, Heavee's back with the first of what I hope is many new tracks. Reworking Gunna's "Speed It Up" with that TEKLIFE swing, Heavee proves that the footwork clan ain't nothing to fuck with, or front on. There's not much else to say, honestly; this one is good and you need it in your life. Lehgo.

Mr. Carmack Really Loves Trap

As an old man who is occupying his days with everything but the everyday happenings in the dance music scene, I missed whatever was going on with Mr. Carmack being asked about his trap noodlings. Whatever the case may be, the acclaimed producer dropped I <3 TRAP EP, a three-track EP with trap stylings from three periods in the electronic music genre (2012, 2013, and 2016). The only note on the EP is that all of its inspiration goes to "Hucci, Flosstradamus. Jackal, and Loudpvck," aka some of the fiercest, most consistent producers in the genre during its heyday. Also means you should know what time it is when you press play.

Dieselboy Previews His 'Heart of Darkness' Tour With Ferocious New Mix

The other day, I realized that I'd been riding for Stateside drum & bass for over two decades. It started with DJ's like Pish Posh and Seen out of NYC, but as I gravitated to the Philly scene, the diabolical Dieselboy has been a staple in my drum & bass diet ever since. I feel like I've only actually seen him DJ once during a wild night in Philly with all of the junglists in the AOL "Ravers" chatroom on hand. He was a robot, with no mix out of place and all bangers being rinsed.

Because he's always been dope, he has to explore new ways of expressing himself. That might be why we only get new DJ mixes form him every few years. Dieselboy's currently on his Heart of Darkness Tour, running through the U.S., and decided to bless the world with a 90+ minute mix, which features his "style of layering tracks that can only be described as “threaded” or “braided” - songs, loops and samples twist around one another in specific ways so that every element enhances those around it." With a tracklist that spans a three-page doc, D threads material from Jam Thieves, Mean Teeth, Phace, Current Value, Signal, and many, many more. It's a rough and rugged ride.

DJ Paypal and DJ Taye Turn Classic Video Game Madness Into the Footwork Anthem "Hammer"

When the world of illegally downloading music was in its infancy, one of the most astonishing feats was doing a search for a video game title and finding a litany of dance remixes of said title. It's like the Rule 34 of electronic music. That's what comes to mind when I keep DJ Paypal and DJ Taye's latest on repeat.

The TEKLIFE representers have been teasing a joint project (playfully done under TAYE//PAL) for a bit while giving us a reason to be excited with their collabs like "Bonfire" and "Chanel". Their release, Computers Smarter Than People, is set to drop on the 22nd of March (or the 29th), but today we get "Hammer," which flips this classic, triumphant video game theme and turns them into a club BANGER. You need this.

DJ Paypal Gave Away His Refreshing Remix of Adam F's "Circles"

With the tempos of footwork and jungle being around the same speed (160 BPM), it's been welcoming to see footwork's finest diving into their jungle bags. Today, DJ Paypal of the TEKLIFE squad shows the world how its done, putting a 2019 footwork shine on Adam F's CLASSIC "Circles." He doesn't go insane with the edits or feel of the tune; it's still just as lush and beautiful as what Adam crafted back in 1995, just with some percussive reworks. Monty "Nothing Wrong"

Over the last year or so, I've become a huge fan of Monty's material. Dude's just got this hypnotic neuro style that has me open each and every time he drops. Dropping on December 7 is his Spatia EP on Alix Perez's 1985 Music imprint, and to celebrate its release, they gave away this intoxicating number, "Nothing Wrong." This cut is only available on the vinyl version of the release, and is very necessary.
