i haven't forgotten about you, true believer...i just haven't had the time. from the quiet death of a podcast that i spent most of 2020 cultivating to the quiet rebirth of another podcast i spent 2020 nurturing, to all of the insanity of what 2020 was, sometimes it was hard to find the time to really WRITE about stuff that doesn't keep the lights on. hell, i even started and stopped a whole different site that i'm itching to carve out more time for. this post isn't about any of that, though.

normal end-of-year traditions usually incorporate two things: DJ Cable's best-of hip-hop megamixes and Cousin Cole's New Year's Day mix. Cable's 2020 AD is actually going to be his final year-end hip-hop mix, which is sad but understandable; dropping 124-track mixes is fucking time consuming! You can download this mix and show him mad love for keeping it going.

Cousin Cole always comes correct with the New Year's Day selections. They are more chill, much more spiritual, and should help you enter the year on a cooler vibe than you went out. And with word of DOOM passing away hitting on Dec. 31, 2020, maybe this is the energy we need to keep going.

Been a bit since I've taken in a new mixtape from Philly's unsung hero DJ Sega. He's back with a new mix, Vision, for the 2-0-2-0, and it's just as frantic and inspiring as his previous work. DJ Cable Drops 100+ Song '2019 AD' Mixtape

I don't know about you, but one mix I always look out for at the top (or bottom) of a year is DJ Cable's annual "AD" mixes, which run through the realm of hip-hop throughout the calendar year. For 2019 AD, Cable drops over 100 songs in this massive three-hour-and-37-minute mix, giving you the full scope of 2019 in rap, from Benny the Butcher to DaBaby.

"Whilst it wasn't the best of years for club joints," Cable said when sending this one over, "there's been so much exciting music coming from the underground." He also makes sure to know that you can "expect the usual bangers, UK sounds, weirdo rap, backpack selections, and even Australian Drill." I'm not sure I've even heard Australian Drill music. The Burner Brothers Celebrate 20 Years With This Retrospective Mix

While I can't say I've been around for everything, I've definitely been at the forefront of the stateside dnb movement. Back in the mid-to-late '90s, there were only so many producers and DJs really doing it that guys like Pish Posh, DJ Seen, and CT—collectively known as The Burner Brothers—have been on my radar. Seeing them grow as individuals and as a squad has been awesome, and after 20(!) years, they are finally ready to drop an album.

To get heads ready for that, they've come correct with Retrospect, a 35-track mix that runs through their career as a unit. You need this, seriously, especially if drum & bass is your place. Stream Retrospect below, and keep it locked for their album, which should be out Spring 2020.

DJ Jazzy Jeff and MICK Soundtrack Your Summer With 'Summertime 10'

Usually, once I see something like DJ Jazzy Jeff and MICK's Summertime 10 (which in the tenth installment of their annual summer-themed mixtape series), I end up posting it as I'm diving into it. Like it or not, they are dope, and I can guarantee satisfaction just by perusing the journey in the tracklist. This year, it's a bit different; I was actually at my mom's during a Fourth of July cookout when this dropped. Cousin Cole Shares New Year's Day 2019 Mix

While many will drop all of the "new year, new me" and "(insert year) is mine" tweets, IG posts, and FB statuses around the New Year, many of us like to let the work do the talking. When it's time to work, you need a proper soundtrack. For anyone looking to get their mind, body, and spirit right for another year around the sun, Cousin Cole is back with his annual New Year's Day mix.

"Since 2014," Cole shared, "I've been making a mix each year for New Year's Day, comprising spiritual jazz, soul, folk, disco, funk, etc. Originally my idea was to provide something positive to ease you out of your hangover and into a new day / new year. Over time my goals expanded to choose songs that subtly address today's problems, usually with a voice from 30 or 40 years in the past. Since 2016, it has been hard to conceptualize anything that would look towards the era of Trump's presidency with any degree of hope, and I almost gave up on the idea. This year has been no different, but I still managed to make something. All the best to you & yours..."

A-Trak Releases '90s Backpacker Rap Set

For Boiler Room's MIXTAPE series, they decided to get A-Trak to drop a guest mix, in which he took it back to the '90s for a special backpack rap set. Loads of '90s NYC hip-hop, from MF Doom and Mos Def to J-Live and CRU, among many more. Recently, Boiler Room shared the video for the set, but it was unfortunately it was only half of the set!



A-Trak, being the stand-up dude that he is, had the full audio from the set, and decided to share it via SoundCloud. Anyone rocking with this site should know what time it is with the tracklist, which is below. Perfect Sunday house cleaning (or weed smoking) material.

DJ Filthy Rich Drops Tribute Mixtape, 'A Clan Called Wu - Enter The Marauders'

On November 9, 1993, two of the most important albums in my growth as a hip-hop fan (and as a man, to be fair)—Wu-Tang Clan's Enter the Wu: 36 Chambers and A Tribe Called Quest's Midnight Marauders—hit shelves. Trying to speak on how vital they are to the world is pointless 25 years later. I usually just listen to them ad nauseum (and watching the Wu perform on GMA) and go on with my life. This year? Shit's a little different. DJ Filthy Rich cooked up A Clan Called Wu - Enter The Marauders, a fresh blendtape putting the Wu's lyrics from Enter the Wu over the classic instrumentals of Midnight.

When speaking on the tape to 2DBz, Rich said "The intent was not to improve on the originals in any way… that would be impossible, as I consider them both to be perfect bodies of work. Rather, it was about orchestrating a fun concept, and putting a totally new spin on these well-worn classics. The contrast of Wu’s gritty street raps over Tribe’s jazzy production works in a pleasantly unexpected way."

DJ Chap Blends All of the Genres In New Release, 'El Mundo Es Tuyo'

Feels like it's been a minute since we've heard from DJ Chap, but realistically, we rocked to Saint Elsewhere back in May. Since then, his Baile Furioso EP has been getting some love, and this week he also dropped El Mundo Es Tuyo. A "mixtape" featuring material he's made over the last year or so, Chap says the project was inspired by "r&b, jungle, ambient music and progressive rock." If you know what time it is with Chap, that still doesn't dive into the meat of this project.

What's wild is, I had just been asking about the lack of bootleg dance remixes, but then realized that they just hide in footwork releases, under different names. Not only does Chap flip Kanye West and Lil Pump's "I Love It" on this release, to this hypnotic SWV rework that I forgot I'd been sitting on for a WHILE.

Releases like these make me remember why I love when capable producers start to question what's been given to us, putting their own spin on these gems. You can stream El Mundo Es Tuyo down below, and cop it over on Bandcamp.

DJ Snoopadelic x Green Lantern 'Live From the Mothership' Mix

What do you get when you have Snoop Dogg, Green Lantern, some bomb weed, a stack of classic funk, soul, and R&B, and an empty studio? Random Tracks of Flyness

Years back, when I realized I had no time or money to be a DJ, I started making these odd mixes using old software. I guess I woke up this morning with a song (well, a bunch of songs) on my heart and decided to churn this out. There's lots of radio static, a bunch of random sounds and sketches that might only be funny/clever to me, but this also represents a bunch of material I dug during that timeframe of not making rockthedub radio mixes. #shrug.

If you aren't up on his Purple Children series, it's where Slim makes sure to chop mostly new school rappers for the next generation. This edition has some really ill chops on it; I'm a personal fan of his chop of Valee's "Juice & Gin". That's my type of hype, and that cover from AWGE's Rob Gallardo fits the vibe perfectly.
