Double Dee & Steinski: The Lessons

I hope you guys weren't sleeping 2 months ago when I told you that the 2xCD retrospective on Steinski entitled What Does It All Mean?: 1983-2006 Retrospective was out today. Well, it's out, and it's the jam. To celebrate, a staple in Hip-Hop history, Hip-Hop production and sampling in general are being made available for you, for free:

I actually had a few of these jammin' this weekend. If you are a fan of cut-up music, Hip-Hop History, and audio art in general, you should pick this up. I highly recommend it, if not for all of these gems on one disc, but for the 2nd disc's 28-track extravoganza, "Nothing To Fear", which, in true Solid Steel flavor, takes tracks you've definitely heard before (including cuts from J-Live, Marvin Gaye & Foxy Brown), and throws in a perfect snippet of sound that ends up turning the track on its ear, without diverting you from the groove. A truly stunning back catalogue that, while not something that made Dee or Steinski millionaires, definitely made their mark on the scene and should be within the Hip-Hop Hall of Fame.

In an added treat, check out "The Lessons Live" from 2000, featuring Steinski with Cut Chemist & DJ Shadow (Part 1 \ Part 2).

Our Favorite Things: A Primer

I promised you guys a review of Negativland's Our Favorite Things DVD last month, but haven't had the time to sit down with it and truly give it my undivided attention. I was given a slab of links from Andy @ Fanatic, though, and wanted to share them with you, so you could decide what you though. Here we go!

What Does It All Mean?

Do you know your Hip-Hop history? Are you a true fan of cut-up music? Then you have to know about Steinski who, with Double Dee, created a trifecta known to bootleggers and historians alike as "The Lessons", a three-part series of cut-up classics that directly influenced artists like DJ Shadow & Cut Chemist, alongside Fatboy Slim and many others. Their first lesson, "The Payoff Mix", won a nationwide remix contest conducted by Tommy Boy Records, and was a Top 10 staple across the US urban radio stations. The three "Lessons" are still bootlegged to this day, and are both very influential - and very illegal. I mean, if you've heard DJ Shadow & Cut Chemist's "Lesson 4", Cut's "Lesson 6", and a host of other sequels, you've been a part of something magical. Steinski has since seen his career blossom, ranging from work done for MTV, VH1, Nickelodeon, Lifetime, Showtime, The Movie Channel, Ninja Tune, NME and many other organizations.

With all of that said, now's a good a time as any for a retrospective on Steinski's career, no? On May 27th, 2008, a double-disc collection entitled What Does It All Mean?: 1983-2006 Retrospective will be released on Illegal Art, and will be the one (and only) collection of its kind. [video] Negativland "My Favorite Things"

If you're a fan of culture-jamming and cut-up art, and this DVD is right up your alley. For 27+ years, Negativland has been commenting on the media, consumerism, and other points with twisted audio-collage pieces, and more full-on songs. I just got sent their Our Favorite Things DVD, which is a collection of 18 collaborations made to Negativland creations from 18 different video artists. You are getting Ariel talking about suing you for jacking audio to an extended commentary on the lengths Pepsi and Coke go to advertise their cola to the masses. The pieces range from full on CGI epics to more crude video trickery, with loads of mashing from old black & white movies, TV broadcasts and more original ish. Highly recommended for fans of crews like Coldcut.



A full review will be coming when I get more time to dissect this epic.

DJ Food The History of the Cut-Up

'Everything Has To End...'

"On January 18th 2004, Strictly Kev premiered the original 'Raiding The 20th Century' on XFM's 'The Remix' show in London. It was a 40 minute attempt to catalogue the history of cut up music - be it avant garde tape manipulation, turntable megamixes or bastard pop mash ups. It rapidly spread throughout the web and managed to cause a full scale server crash on boomselection.info when they hosted it due to the volume of net traffic.

Shortly afterwards he read Paul Morley's recently published book 'Words & Music' and was amazed that certain chapters mirrored parts of his mix. Apart from the fact that the title, 'Raiding the 20th Century' was coined by Morley 20 years before for a future Art of Noise project, he also featured Alvin Lucier, who - purely by chance - was sampled on the opening track of the mix.

Kev decided to expand his idea to make the defnitive document on cut up music including many other parts, omitted by the constraints of the original radio session. After months of further research he tracked Morley down and they recorded passages from 'Words & Music' specially for this mix in an attempt tomarry the two and finish something that neither of them actually started. A year to the day of the original airing, the newly expanded version is ready."
