danny brown's new single cured my depression (10/18/2023)

i kid; that depression been here and stays here. but it does help me remember that, sometimes, good stuff happens.

anyways, i got word the other day that Danny Brown was due to drop his next album, Quaranta, on Nov. 17 (digital) / Jan. 19 (physical), and i was ready. a few months ago i started making a Danny Brown playlist with my favorite songs from his career—didn't realize i was making it in anticipation for the album that The Alchemist produced. or that it would be a "spiritual book-end" to his 2011 opus XXX. yeah. it's that kind of party.

pre-orders for Quaranta are available now; you can get a t-shirt and stuff. peep the video for "Tantor" below.

Danny! Payback (Cover)

I'd tell you guys all the info about Payback that I know, but I don't know much. I know it's Danny!'s next project, and is due out late September. Rumor is you should be able to decipher the guest appearances if you decode Danny!'s Tumblr. I'm also told that "Been Away Too Long", a cut from the project, should be out in "just a few days". #shrug - mum's the word until the word is spoken.

[stream] DJ Spinna & BBE Soundsystem Present Strange Games & Funky Things Volume 5

The Strange Games… series which began in the summer of 1997, represents the blueprint for modern R&B and rap music. It joins the dots between 70s soul, 80s rare groove and 90s mass market hip hop. This compilation contains a wide variety of styles of tracks, from classic dance-floor fillers as well as lesser known delights. A more accessible diggers delight if you wish with an emphasis on quality track and not just songs worth having for a two second sample.

Conceived by BBE bossman Peter Adarkwah over 14 years ago, this fifth volume is mixed by longterm BBE stalwart, one of the world's best DJ Spinna. Featuring a much more worldly selection than its predecessors - tracks by the multi platinum selling War to Sylvia (Founder of Sugarhill Records) sit side by side with world music underground icons like C.K. Mann and Francisco Aguabella. This volume is the 5th in a series of compilations that appears to have the widest appeal of all BBE’s compilations and proves to be even better by the fact that there is a bonus mixed CD by the one and only DJ Spinna!

02. Sylvia - Sweet Stuff

Camu Tao King of Hearts LP Info

This past May marked the two-year anniversary of Camu Tao's passing, but I got a bunch of info earlier today regarding his first (and final) solo album, King of Hearts, that will finally be getting released via Definitive Jux/Fat Possum Records on August 17th. The sound from these demos and home recordings is a departure from what you might associate with Camu - he's doing a lot more crooning on this, and the sound leans more to the leftfield ElectroPopPunk feel than the harder Hip-Hop edge he had previously been associated with. He wrote and produced the project, and its an interesting chapter on a talent that was truly cut short. He channels fucking Prince on "Get At You", and its a pretty stark contrast to the rest of his catalog. Peep the tracklist:

01 Be a Big Girl
02 Bird Flu
03 Death
04 Fonny Valentine
05 Actin a Ass
06 Get at You
07 Ind of the Worl
08 Intervention
09 King of Hearts
10 Major Team
11 Plot a Little
12 The Moment
13 The Perfect Plan
14 Play O Run
15 When You're Going Down
16 Fuck Me

After the jump, check out El-P's letter from earlier this year, which also mentions that the Central Services (El x Camu) EP from 2005, Forever Frozen In Television Time, will be released for free to coincide with the release of King of Hearts (did you hear "What God Should Do"?).

Rollin' Rockers Bang!Bang! Sampler

I posted the old version of this release earlier this year, and we got hype when we heard that the Rollin' Rockers signed with Ever Ready for the new and improved version of Bang!Bang!, which is available for pre-order right now. That pre-order's for the sick USB drive version of the album, which comes in a fresh pharmaceutical pill form - all in limited-edition colorways, exclusive mixes, videos, photos and other content! Get your order in now, as they start shipping June 16th.

But you may ask, what does this revamped version sound like? Well, I've been lucky to know Perpetuum and have heard the progression of the sound, and when I say that you should imagine P-Funk discovering dubstep, Electro and other genres and funking them out with a Hip-Hop appeal, that's just the tip of the iceberg. Tracks like "Litro", which now has a more upfront Drum & Bass edge to it, or "Thangz High", which ride that dubstep vein just the way I like it? Serious next-level shit. I always wish for more artists to take chances and really experiment - and you can tell that these Fresh Coasters are willing to twerk it, and get it. Just check out the Electro bouncefest of "Molly Ringwald", or the George Clinton 2410 head-nodder "Neon Lights"... man, I could go on and on. I hope to finally sort out an interview with these guys, going into all of this, but for the time being, check out the 8+ minute sampler for Bang!Bang!.

The Roots How I Got Over Cover+Tracklist

Last week, I asked heads on twitter what Hip-Hop albums they were looking forward to this summer, and a lot of them said the new album from The Roots. Def Jam has this coming out on June 22nd (a week after Drake's Thank Me Later), and I hope it comes out on time. This might also be one of the shortest Roots LPs ever. Don't know why I mentioned that, just seems odd.

Tracklist:

1. Walk Alone (Truck North, Porn, Dice Raw, Mercedes Martinez)
2. Dear God 2.0 (Jim James, MOF)
3. Radio Daze (Blu, Porn, Dice Raw, Mercedes Martinez)
4. Now Or Never (Phonte Coleman, Dice Raw)
5. How I Got Over (Dice Raw)
6. The Day (Blu, Phonte Coleman, Patty Crash)
7. Right On (Joanna Newsom, Sugar Tongue Slim)
8. Doin It Again (John Legend)
9. The Fire (John Legend, Rick Friedrich)

Wow - STS, Blu AND Phonte make appearances? Shouts to RR.

EDIT Okayplayer says that this tracklist was missing a few tracks:

10. Web 20/20 (Truck North, Peedi Crakk)
11. Bonus Cut

Word is that there are 3 or 4 unnamed interludes, and the bonus track's name is not known as of yet. The listening session for this LP is tonight (5/20/10), so yeah, we'll see what comes about.
