Wishing I Was A Sneaker Head

Is it odd to wish I was a sneaker head? Cats like Dallas Penn and my other peers are HEAVY into the footwear game, and have been for a bit. I like simple shoes, but I'd like to have a LOT of simple shoes. I'm comfortable in shit like New Balances, but with all the walking I do on the daily, I can jack a pair of dope kicks up. I'm on that "wear them a few times then keep them hidden" kind of stee-lo. Same thing with the streetwear - I love dope t-shirts, but I try to keep my best pieces hidden. What's the point in that? Maybe I just need a job where I can get stupid paid for being at home, or going out to events, and have a chance to rock some dope pieces... dreams, eh? Until then, I guess I'll just be building my collection, piece by piece.

the foreseeable future...

So, my job is putting the kibosh on our Internet access. Gonna put a crimp in my steelo, but I won't be gone.less than a minute ago via ÜberTwitter

This does not mean the end of RTD by any means... just a difference of the post flow. More scheduled posts, which could end up being a very good thing. The Friday playlists will end up being posted later in the day, for good or ill. That might be the main letdown - but what can you do? Gotta make the bacon! Plus, this will actually allow me to do MORE writing - which could mean more interviews?! Who knows. Just wanted to give you lot a heads up!

I've Been To Hell...

I've been to Hell, and the Devil is a female who stands 6'2, weighing 220lbs EASY.

See, God rest the dead. My co-worker passed earlier this year - without going into too many details, dude drank himself to the point where his body shut down. Damn shame, dude was in his 40s and looked like he was 65, all crippled up. A real fucking mess. Now, we've been working w/ one man down for a few months, and shit can be tough. Our department hasn't shut down, but we need some help, so when my supervisor said they were going to be interviewing for a temp., I was all for it.

Now, before I dip into the nightmare we've lived in for 6 weeks, let me just tell you that I have a co-worker who isn't the team lead but wants to be. I'm gonna call her M.L., short for Marlboro Light, because that's what she smokes. She wanted to make sure we got the right person, so she sat in on the interviews. She interviewed the Devil, AKA Helltemp, and said "hey, this might work, but she is going to have a problem getting along with Haitian Jack" (Haitian Jack is another co-worker)... I said whatever, if it works, it works.

OK, let me tell you that I've never been so annoyed at work in my LIFE! The day Helltemp started, no one wanted to help her - which is par for the course. I am the asshole who says shit like "I'll train her on some stuff", and come to find out, I sort-of have some history with her. Well, first things first, this nigga I'll call Chubbypimp hit me up on the sly like "Yo watch out for that girl, everything she says is a lie"; it reminded me of Memento, where Leonard wouldn't believe anything "Teddy" said because his Polaroid had a note that read "Don't Believe His Lies" or whatever. So she starts talking... and talking... and talking. Which is fine, but what the fuck? Where's your notepad? Where's your off button? Bitch can I take the batteries out? I find out that the chick is "married" (more on that later) to a nigga who used to manage this Big Box store that I part-timed at like 5 years ago. She apparently worked there as well, and tried to tell me that I even worked a Saturday evening with her, but I a) was long gone during the time period she placed and b) would've remembered working with Goliath.

Mind you, I know way more than I need to know about this chick, which is probably my fault. While my tweets about work-related hate are funny, that's also an outlet for me, so I can NOT say the shit I want to say to these pinheads. But I digress...

The bit about her marriage is a story altogether. The nigga she was "married" to is a fucking mack-a-roni. I knew for a FACT that he was a mack-a-roni, because I had to previously listen to his fiasco with a former crack-addicted meatball at the job, who ended up having static with Helltemp. The thing is, homegirl would slip up: another fact I know is that once you are married, you stop using terms like boyfriend or girlfriend, you know? At least I did. On her Facebook page, her shit said "engaged", which further let me know the bidness. Bust it, though - she told me the nigga was hardly there. Not like he would come home late... nah, the nigga lived there like half a week at a clip, or just didn't come home.

Say what?

Now, while all of this is going on, I'm doing my damnest to train her - was even told that she picked up on shit quicker than most people would. What's crazy is - she didn't retain shit. Don't let her go home on a Friday and be asked to run a report we trained on all week - she'd hit me up every step like "now what?" or "what's this?"... no retention what-so-ever! While our building is going through renovations, I'm sitting across the room from my group, so I'm having to getup and help her 10, 12 times a day? I wore the fucking rug out with my back and forth!

And on top of all this, the bitch is pregnant with the mack-a-roni's baby! Yes, she started a job three months pregnant, and had no intention of telling anyone. I know because she is a stupid blabbermouth, and told me (even though I kind of picked up on it when she asked about benefits and shit - you know you're on a 90 day probation, right?)... whatever, that's just deep, because now I know this fucking big secret and feel like a snitch nigga if I tell my supervisor. And then I have to have the guilt of "oh what if this bitch gets the job, then goes on maternity later in the year - will my boss ask me if I knew?" shit... bad situation, fam.

One afternoon, Helltemp informed me that the Mack-A-Roni was in a South Carolina hospital, essentially on his deathbed. She had no idea where the nigga was, no hospital name, room #, nothing. OK does that sound right to you? If I got sick out of town, my wife would be hellbent on finding out where the shit I was - not even knowing where her man is is not even on the fucking menu! And this chick accepted it, and kept it moving. She don't know this, but I had a feeling she was shullbitting me about the "marriage" right then. Whatever. Weeks of this, with a nigga in the hospital, getting worse and worse - and somehow you have no thoughts like "maybe I need to take a day or 2 off and be with him". Blah blah, he's given 6-9 months to live. No cause for alarm, nothing.

The nigga died this weekend. RIP to the Mack-A-Roni.

Now, no disrespect to the death or to the situation, but this nigga macked to the GRAVE! How about Helltemp wasn't even his only chick! How about Mack-A-Roni wasn't in S.C. at all - the nigga was like 10 minutes away in another town with his real wife?!?! A bitch that Helltemp and I worked with at the Big Box, a bitch who KNEW about his thing with Helltemp for like a year and change prior!

Talk about shit luck.

Now as sad as all of this is, the chick still has to go. I sympathize with her trying situation and all, but her work ethic is kind of crap. Whether its cussin' a bit too loud to always coming around my desk talking about her gas, or just loud talking in general. Or should I break down the numerous reports and projects I try training you on, only to have me continuously need my assistance in EVERYTHING? What about her already having taken 3 or 4 days off, in a 90-day probation?

Not to mention Helltemp and M.L. being the ones who have beef, and not Hatian Jack?!?!?! Bust it: M.L. would straight try and son Helltemp for ANYthing. I had a feeling they didn't get along, but when I have one hitting me by e-mail while the other is at my desk, both complaining about the other? My fucking head is spinning.

As yours probably is, and you're just reading this.

Long story (a bit) short, Helltemp came to my desk and told me that either tomorrow (Friday) is her last day, or she'll be going to another department. I got a feeling the other department won't have shit to do with her after an interview... especially if this bitch tells them that she plans on being out for 3 days next week. Yeah, I'm hoping this is "peace out", but knowing my luck, the bitch won't go away.

I do promise this: if Helltemp does NOT leave after tomorrow, expect a shitload-more posts breaking down her fuckery. It might aggravate me, but I need to get this shit out of my system or I'm liable to crack.

CRACK!

So yeah, I've been to hell... its hot and it smells like feces. And the Devil is a 6'2, 220+ pound white chick who thinks she is cooler/more ghetto that she truly is. And I want out!

don't say nuthin'

just a bit of a dougie houser-ish post, need to get some ish off my chest.

i don't know what i'm doing. not in terms of my life, but the opportunities i miss. its almost like that nigga who's last picked - he can shine if you just let him show you.

i feel like i could be doing so much MORE, but for whatever reason, cats don't see me in that light.

maybe it's because i'm not on everyone's blogroll. maybe it's because i don't have a bottomless wallet.

i don't know what it is, but it can get aggravating sometimes. i know what i can do, and how i can do it. no one else does.

i wanna scream sometimes "HEY RAPPER/DJ/PRODUCER - I GET YOU, WHY DON'T YOU GET ME?! I CAN HELP YOU, WHY NOT HELP ME HELP YOU?"

its almost as niggas is appeasing me to get shit out on the 'net, so they can see the next plateau they need to reach for. is that my position - the screener?

if so, let me know. if not, let me know.

just talk to me, you. say your words. or just don't say nuthin'... wait, you're doing that already.

thank you. and you're welcome.

DZ "What You Won't Do For Love"

DZ "What You Won't Do For Love": I really tried. I wanted to cop this release on MP3, legally. Due to what it is, though, I believe its on a limited vinyl run, which makes sense. Its part of the duality of this shit, though. Back in the day, it used to be "if you can't get it, wait until you can"; with the 'Net, shit is just instant. I can normally wait for releases until I am given them or they are widely distributed. Other times, I have to be that faucet. I've been a fan of DZ for the last few years (and he has been on FIRE in 2008)... and that Bobby Caldwell original? Shit, I have the 7" at my mom's house somewhere. Such a classic, and one of my favorite tracks out there. Enjoy this.

DJ Food "The Breaks Of Wrath"

DJ Food "The Breaks Of Wrath": Let me tell you a story that's like a decade old: one of my favorite mix CDs (and possible one of the greatest compilations, ever) is ColdKrushCuts, a massive two-disc soundclash between DJ Krush, Coldcut & DJ Food, throwing the headphonephunk of the Ninja Tune back catalogue at that time into two well-spun discs (DJ Krush held one disc down solo, while Coldcut & DJ Food threw the 2nd disc together). On Disc 2, there's the random DJ Food track entitled "The Breaks Of Wrath" that plays for something like two minutes that has eluded me ever since I first heard it. It's nothing more than a simple bass tone progression thrown at a bevy of bombastic beats. Listening to this cut was the highest I got before my pre-ganja days. It's got everything I needed: moody bass, beats for days and nothing else. Now, I always assumed this cut was just a dubplate they made for the mix, but I kept a search for it in my Soulseek wishlist, and this afternoon, I found out that a lone compilation (Rumpus Rooms Volume 1), which came out in 1996 (or 1997?) has this entire track, untouched, as track one of their 2nd disc! Wow. 7 minutes of funk from the DJ Food foursome (Coldcut, PC and Strictly Kev). Early Christmas gifts, forreal.

What's sad about this, however, is that no one but me will care. Oh well.

Get Money

So today, at work, I won the 50/50 pot. Nice lil' addition to my wallet at a time where the fam really needs the loot. The funny thing is this: I'm not sure if it's because people think I'm a nice guy, or if I looking fucking BROKE, but people keep congratulating me, saying shit like "I'm happy for you". Does this happen often? Do I look that poor/homely? My Snoopy t-shirt from Wal-mart is pressed and stain free!

I don't know. All I can say is: we're getting hot wings SOMEtime this weekend!

PS I need to take some new drunken shots this holiday season. I believe the above pic is two years old...

PPS True sign of a #1 Dad is definitely the one dollar bills. Fall back, fake pops!

Do Bloggers Get Sponsored?

I like clothes. I'm no fashion plate, but ill clothes (especially dope t-shirts) always make me excited. I have like 3 t-shirt drawers: one for the ones my son can spit up and puke on (I'm smart like that), one's that I don't mind going to the grocery store with, and one drawer with my tees that I treat better than my suit(s). I have just always been like that.

Another thing I have been is a loud spokesperson for things I love and appreciate. If you peep my blog on any regular basis, you see - I ride for the shit I love.

Now, those in the skateboarding scene know, the thing to get is a sponsorship. It shows that you aren't just some regular cat. Some company, whether it's clothes or boards or whatever, feels that you can be a representative of their brand.

Shouldn't bloggers get the same treatment? Most bloggers have their own voice, but aside from cats like Eskay getting linked up with the Complex fam, or TSS and Rizoh being down with Rawkus, I don't really see much like that in the blogosphere, esp. the Hip-Hop blogs.

So, what say you clothing companies? Do you want me, a guy who appreciates style, to be your online face?

When A Toothless Man Strikes...

My co-worker looks like this man, only slightly younger, with longer hair... and less teeth. I've never been told why he has no teeth, is skinnier than Paris Hilton and walks with a cane, but I figure it's either a) a crack habit or b) getting hit by a Mac truck, possibly while smoking crack.

That's not the point of this story, though. This is just what I have to deal with, day in and day out, when I attempt to perform work-related duties.

Without giving away the name of my employer, I will just say we handle many functions for the state of New Jersey. We run many reports, and make sure proceeses go through so people can get loot. Now, my department has a few main reports that need to be ran daily, including one that must hit the State by 9AM or bad things happen (apparently, I've seen that report be 30 minutes late and no one got fired). Our crew is about 5 people deep, but we rotate schedules between 3 people. One person might run "the report" 2 days a week, and we just switch it off between the 3 of us. The thing is, my co-workers are not competent enough to 1) give me training on all of the procedures and programs and 2) make up a simple schedule. When this happens, I have a Toothless Man over my shoulder, confusing me further.

Two weeks ago, I was told I was to run "the report" on Tuesdays and Thursdays, which was no problem, except that on Thursdays I knock out this larger spreadsheet that's not diffuclt nor time-sensitive, just time-consuming. It can be started after "the report" has been sorted, and really causes no fuss. There ended up being a big hub-bub, but no "OK you can run the spreadsheet on another day". So my schedule, the one I wrote for myself read "'the report': Tues & Thurs, spreadsheet: Fri". So Thursday of last week comes, and I'm running "the report"... but so is Toothless Man. Since I'm on the ball, I locked him out when he tried to access it... and here he comes! "You're doing 'the report'?" he asks; "Yes, that's the schedule, right?" I say. "OH NO, you are to do 'the report' on FRIDAY, because you do the spreadsheet on Thursday" he barks back. I look at my paper, say "OK" and finish 'the report', advising him I'll do the spreadsheet the next day - which I do. I asked him Friday, "I am doing the spreadsheet today, right?" "Yes, because you did 'the report' yesterday"...

Flash forward to 45 minutes ago. I notice he is away from his desk at 8AM, which is odd, b/c 'the report' needs to be knocked out early. I get a few mintues into printing out all of the data for the spreadsheet - and here comes Toothless Man on some "you're supposed to run 'the report' today". HUH!? I look at him like, what? He says "yeah, you do 'the report' on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and work the spreadsheet on Fridays", which is essentially what I told him last week. I am fucking dog tired, and not in the mood for foolishness, so I laughed it off, handed him the pound of data I printed out, and knocked out 'the report'.

*sigh* I think my department is incompetent. I just got an e-mail from my manager asking me why 'the report' was sent out so late... when I sent it to the State @ 8:49AM, and he emailed me at 8:50AM.

Is today just not my day?

mad love for rock the dub

Kind of wild this week... my blog got love from The Rap Up, Oh Word AND Nah Right! That's not normal...

Maybe some shine is finally coming my way? Or maybe I'm just hitting a lucky streak... in any case, maybe I should play the numbers this week... I mean, three of what I consider to be of the best Hip-Hop blogs on the 'Net shout me out in the same week? Maybe I am doing something right...

In any case, shouts out to Rafi, Rizoh and Eskay for the shine. Truly appreciated.

"Bad review? I sue!"

Over @ T.R.U., Riz threw up this link, which calls into question the idea of suing for bad reviews, and the training that goes on between musicians in comparison to the training/credentials critics need. All of this is good, but it made me think of one thing:

If musicians could sue for every bad review I ever gave them, I would be put into the super-poor house by artists like Lupe Fiasco, Shop Boyz, Gwen Stefani, Pharrell and many other artists... and that's just on this blog! This hasn't even scratched the surface of the DNB scene - but then again, them niggas ain't got no monies anyway.

I do have a problem with critics who aren't qualified - like country music critics writing a piece on Hip-Hop; but those who have knowledge about the field (whether it's as a long fan or someone who is in the industry), and they are giving an unbiased opinion (payola is a no-go), why diss on them for dissing on you? Especially MCs, who will spit and claw and cry over free speech - until it says something about them not hitting right, or whatever the case may be. Keep it real - grown folks accept criticism. That's how it works. Deal with it or don't read it.

Monday Evening Quarterback

Wow. What a difference a day makes.

Not only did I fucking miss eskay linking the Sirius Invasion mixtape from DJ Green Lantern (which might become my fav. mixtape of this year, like Alive on Arrival was last year), but I missed out on the trailer to the last 9 episodes of Season 6 of The Sopranos:

(forgive the audio, it's off a lil')

How ill does that look? More conflict between T and Carm? Carm getting @ Chrissy for something? The feds arresting T? Carm's "you had it coming" comment? Looks intense... Can't wait. April 8th, baby!

Can't wait. Now if I could just secure a job, shit'd be ill as FUCK! LOL.

POI [3/07/2007]

Just a few points of interest I want to hit you guys with whilst I wait for my son to get home, my daughter to have her root canal, LOST to come on tonight, and me to finally land a job:

  • There are some DJ NAPPY T-Shirts floating about. $25 will get you in the official wears (in men's and women's styles) of the THUGSTEP King. I'm copping a XXL in the next week or so. Don't sleep.
  • Speaking of DJ Nappy, DJ K. Ross of the Sound Advice click has done him the honors of linking to Nappy's ill THUGSTEP refix of Wes Fif's "Haterz Everywhere" and Skream's "Stagger" (grab it HERE). I've personally bore witness to this track crushing the dance hall.
  • Speaking of Nappy's refixes, there's an ill one involving Lil Jon and J Dilla that I cannot share right now, but trust when I say, it gets shit done. Fucking beautiful.
  • DNB artist Submerged's new LP is going to be dropping on April 27th, 2007, and he posted up clips of every track on DOA. Serious sounds.
  • The latest LOST podcast is up and live. Grab it HERE. Ever since my Zen Xtra went shit on me, I haven't even wanted to listen to one. I have a new mp3 player coming in the mail though, so one shall see...
  • Dasit, AKA the first white rapper to quit from The (white) Rapper Show has a diss track out, talking shit on MC Serch, Persia, $hamrock, and other, all in his best Eminem voice. What a herb. ("Hater 2" dirty : clean - right click, 'Save As')
  • I was #8 in Tony Hawk's Project 8, but I just earned the #5 spot. To celebrate that, here's an ill snippet from Skatemore featuring Daewon Song.

That's all that's on my mind that's not my family. Keep it locked.

Fattie Tuesday

Nice play on words, no?

Just popping in to say what's really really to you guys out there. I first want to apologize if my last shuffle was kind of 'blah'... kind of hard to get jazzed about some of the nonsense stories out there.

In any case, I saw that today is Fat Tuesday, or Shrove Tuesday, depending on what part of the world you live in. The reason I remembered, though, was because they said it was "Pancake Tuesday". I remember this time last year being down in South Jersey, with my Marines-bound cousin Mike, making sure everything for his father's funeral was straight. It was a rough Feb., with my Uncle Allen passing, and J. Dilla passing, just a surreal time really. Shit, I grew up on Dilla beats and my Uncle's eats. He introduced my to Canadian bacon and the joys of pepper on fried potatoes. He taught me how to be smooth and cool, and how to not take everything so seriously, even if he was a principal at schools for developmentally disabled teens. His desk would have a drawer full of brass knucks, knives, all kinds of things, and he toko it all with a grain of salt. It was hard seeing him in that casket, emotionless, when his face was all salt and pepper beard, puffy cheeks, Winston in hand/on lip, cracking a joke or a sarcastic face.

His life was spent helping others, and it was his own body that couldn't help him. He drank and smoked for years, and his ticker gave out. It was all so mind-blowing until I saw him in that coffin, with hundreds of people in that auditorium. Crying, rejoicing, reconnecting, all over Smitty.

Why am I bringing this up? I dunno, it's Pancake Day. Get fat and reminisce on your loved ones.

Job Woes, episode #98948594

So, I had to turn down a job today. It's not that the pay wasn't right, or that the company didn't want me, but I'm just in a situation where I need to a) look out for my best interests and b) look out for my family. I am not in the business of getting put on through a temp. agency for a 2month gig that MAY turn long-term. I'd rather stick unemployment out until I find something that's perm and comfortable.

The main reason, though, is my lack of whippage (and, well, lack of Ls). I'd literally be gone from my house for 12hours - leaving at 7AM on the nose to catch 2 buses, to do it all again and be back home after 7PM that night. I have grinded it out on that route before, but I also didn't have a lil seed that can't fend for himself. The temp. agency got pissed when I let them know I couldn't take the position, but really, would you rather me dip 2 weeks into the position for the exact same reason? The fucked up part is, if I took an earlier set of hours, I'd be bouncing out the house earlier, which doesn't help anyone.

So, I'm still on my grizzly. My dream is to get a Work From Home gig, but none of these "legit" spots are really legit. Or geared for someone like me. I find many "MommyJobs" sites, shit set up for stay at home moms, but what about pops? Where the FUCK do the stay at home fathers work? Are they all well off enough that they don't need that paper? I know, blogging isn't really an answer, there's no money in blogs like mine, but shit, I can write! And eBay hustling is cool, but I don't have hot inventory - I'm more like doing an eGarage Sale.

Back to the drawing board... fucking frustrating, really. In the end, I don't think I'm cut out for the corporate sector. I mean, I'm always looked at as that nigga, the one who can present himself well but is marked for one reason for another. I used to think that it was just me looking at life that way, but those stares aren't a joke. It's hard trying to do right out here. And I'm not even a street dude like that! I just try to live a clean life and support my family. I feel as though I have marketable skills, I just don't know how to present them and turn those gifts into chips.

If anyone can help me, please shoot me a comment or e-mail. 1.

fate or destiny...

Right now, I'm listening to a CD I forgot about... it's a decade old this year, by producer No ID, famous for his work on Common's older LPs. The track: "Fate Or Destiny" (maybe I'll up it later this week)...

It just has me thinking on something my wife was asking me earlier tonight: she wanted to know my feelings on fatherhood. I mean, for those who don't know, I've been a father for the last 4+ years, what with my two teenage daughters (17 next month and 16 in July...), but with lil' man, I'm actually seeing this lil' human being grow up - discover new flavors (he's back and forth with the candy cane), learning how to laugh and giggle, and all the other little things that shape his ever-evolving personality. The thing is, it's hitting me, but I might not be showing it - mainly because it's so natural.

Whether it be fate or destiny, I'm here, taking things on like a champ if I do say so myself. The shoes feel worn, and comfy. I'm walking in these footsteps that seem foreign but I'm treading like a dog in the ocean. And surviving... I may be terrible at finding a new job, I might not get the stuff going on my blog the way I like, hell, I might not be the best person I can be at times, but I know what the time is with my son. And no matter how big he smiles at moms when she comes in after a long day at work, he knows what time it is with pops...

fate or destiny, I have no clue, but I like what this is doing to me.
