This Is Thugstep, Vol. 3

With recent news about the Skrillex x Kanye West collaboration, compilations like the This Is Thugstep series are needed now more than ever, if nothing just to say "this shit isn't new: catch-up". While the first compilation showed you a lot of the foundation of this sound (and tracks that exemplified the sound), volume two took it a step further, showing a lot of the refixes that came out after THUGSTEP's formation and how other DJs have freaked the sound. Volume 3 has dropped today, and has a grip of original tunes in this vein. You've got new(er) stuff from Bassnectar (with Lupe Fiasco), Casey Veggies, Cypress Hill & Rusko, Stinkahbell & Psy:am, Heroes x Villains and more, with refix pressure from Santi Junior, Spinstyles and Stratus. Nappy tested, RTD-approved. Artwork again done by @theotisjones, with ClubTapes supporting the movement. It never stops.

Kanye West x Skrillex For Next Kanye Album

In another example of "khal been done told us about this", Skrillex recently spoke about working on a track with Kanye West for his next album: "I did some music with Kanye and from what I know, it's actually going to be the first song on his new album". After hearing "Who Gon Stop Me Now", you already should've known that this was the beginning... for 'Ye. We've been off on that THUGSTEP for how long now? This Is Thugstep, Vol. 2

Once again, it's on. Following up on last month's well-received This Is Thugstep compilation, we hit you with the next edition. This one features a number of refix artists that Nappy and I have associated ourselves with since this thing got started, from JayCeeOh and the Dixon Brothers to Heroes + Villains, DJ Cable, Styles&Complete, DJ Hipnotikk, Spinstyles and more, with heads like Distance, Caspa, Vaski, Clicks & Whistles, Sinden and others filling out the duties of remixing/refixing and blending some of the finest artists within Hip-Hop and Bass Music, including: Nicki Minaj, Lil Wayne, Young Jeezy, Ludacris, Danny Brown, Wiz Khalifa, A$AP Rocky, Davr, Darq E Freaker and plenty more. My boy Santi Junior uploaded this one - massive refix of this Dorrough tune. Cookie Monsta's not one of my favorite producers, but he knows how to churn out a banger, and this one is the proper amount of video game-y quirk to dig into. Not sure what Santi has in store, but I know it'll be fucking sick.

This Is Thugstep

Glad this one is finally out. A few years ago, DJ Nappy, myself and some of our compatriots in this THUGSTEP thing were discussing the need for a definitive mixtape/compilation for the THUGSTEP genre that we've been flying the flag for. The idea got swept under the rug, and the vision you see in the cover came to me. I had always had a folder of cuts that typified this dubstep/Hip-Hop hybrid and wanted to showcase some of those, along with a number of other blends, refixes and original tracks that have popped up over the last five years. This tape starts out properly with DJ Nappy's "Act A Fool" blend of Coki and Lil Jon, which was the first THUGSTEP refix ever done. We touch a number of other favorites, including Caspa remixing Ludacris and Redman on different cuts, Gimpmode (RIP) blending Emalkay and Gucci Mane, Bare reworking Wiz Khalifa's "Black & Yellow", Snoop Dogg coasting over Chase & Status' "Eastern Jam", a Weezy cut that's my personal favorite and the mighty "Flocka Riddim" from DJ Cable and Fused Forces. Hell, the insane WTF?! flip of dead prez's "Hip Hop" is even included. And this is only the beginning. Planning on keeping these compilations dropping in the summer of 2012, so by the time it's over, there should be NO QUESTION of what THUGSTEP is. Lil' something special for my dubsteppin' ganja lighters. Noah D should be a name you already know (and if not, cop that fire album of his, Perspective). I got the honor of featuring him on the first RTDLTD release, but at the time, his DnB was on one end and his dubstep was skyrocketing. He punches up this B-Real/Jr. Gong cut perfectly. Effortlessly. Damian's part in particular is my ish. Light whatever you're chiefing and blast this one. For free.

I wanna send a shout to DJ Wonder - he's not only just showed DJ Nappy love numerous times on Shade45, but he fucks with the EDM/Bass Music hybrid styles from all others as well. Today, Wonder dropped an EXCLUSIVE refix that Nappy put together with a beat from ƱZ, who's dropping a project with Mad Decent's The Jeffrees on the the 21st of June - peep the minimix for that project HERE. Nicki Minaj "Beez In The Trap (Knuckle Children Bootleg)"

Talk about random. If I'm not mistaken, Knuckle Children is an AKA from the GEIN boys. They normally rock some pretty intense Drum & Bass, so to hear them crunch out some heavyweight THUGSTEP vibes? All about it. I wasn't into much about this Nicki Minaj original, aside from her gyrating in the video, but I fucks with this version. Right up my alley. You'll see once this series drops... on Memorial Day, God willing. #warned

Curly Castro "Lard"

After a long delay, it looks like the Curly Castro vs. RTD project will be dropping. Cas is letting these jawns fly individually. Might have to zip them all for you lot when it's all done. This EP was me sending Castro a batch of beats and him doing the damn thing. He takes a cut from Skream's more experimental, non-abrasive side and lays it to waste. There's a few MCs I fucks with that really understand how to work the bass music beats, and this one is more IDM than anything else (reminds me of Aphex Twin for some reason). Adds a nice batch of sly funk with his rhymes, you smell me? Gastric bypass dreams.

I'd tell you how quickly this project turned around, but you wouldn't believe me. When I heard that a limited edition of XXX with a bonus 7" with four acapellas dropped on Record Store Day last month, I had a feeling Nappy would be going in like this. And I fucks with it more than I thought I would. We champion the melding of Hip-Hop and Bass Music all day, everyday, and that "Blueberry" single proves how effortlessly Danny Brown can rip the shit you guys turn your noses at. Fucks with this - fresh cuts from Knight Riderz, Om Unit, Baauer and more get thrown right up against Danny's rhymes. You already.

Stupid Americans "Thug Step"

This landed in the email today. Nice to know that the shit DJ Nappy pioneered and RTD championed is getting this kind of exposure. I mean, the shit is right fucking here. This is how a Thug Step. Stupid Americans is Ras Kass & Money B (of Digital Underground) going all cross-genre on a bitch, and Ras calls 12th Planet, who he's collaborated with a number of times, and they created a fucking masterpiece of Thugstep excellence. The one like Mad Lion linked up and adds his own flair to the track. We been on that shit for how long, doe?!?

Santi Junior - Thugstep Motivation, Vol. 1

The boy Santi Junior reps the Netherlands THUGSTEP scene. I'm not sure how big the scene is, but surely after this compilation of previously leaked and new refixes, the world over should be aware of his sound. He's got a great attitude and work ethic - I swear new bits of his drop weekly. Never stops. And from some unreleased originals he's done, I know he's not even begun to do the damn thing.
