i haven't forgotten about you, true believer...i just haven't had the time. from the quiet death of a podcast that i spent most of 2020 cultivating to the quiet rebirth of another podcast i spent 2020 nurturing, to all of the insanity of what 2020 was, sometimes it was hard to find the time to really WRITE about stuff that doesn't keep the lights on. hell, i even started and stopped a whole different site that i'm itching to carve out more time for. this post isn't about any of that, though.

normal end-of-year traditions usually incorporate two things: DJ Cable's best-of hip-hop megamixes and Cousin Cole's New Year's Day mix. Cable's 2020 AD is actually going to be his final year-end hip-hop mix, which is sad but understandable; dropping 124-track mixes is fucking time consuming! You can download this mix and show him mad love for keeping it going.

Cousin Cole always comes correct with the New Year's Day selections. They are more chill, much more spiritual, and should help you enter the year on a cooler vibe than you went out. And with word of DOOM passing away hitting on Dec. 31, 2020, maybe this is the energy we need to keep going.

DJ Cable Drops 100+ Song '2019 AD' Mixtape

I don't know about you, but one mix I always look out for at the top (or bottom) of a year is DJ Cable's annual "AD" mixes, which run through the realm of hip-hop throughout the calendar year. For 2019 AD, Cable drops over 100 songs in this massive three-hour-and-37-minute mix, giving you the full scope of 2019 in rap, from Benny the Butcher to DaBaby.

"Whilst it wasn't the best of years for club joints," Cable said when sending this one over, "there's been so much exciting music coming from the underground." He also makes sure to know that you can "expect the usual bangers, UK sounds, weirdo rap, backpack selections, and even Australian Drill." I'm not sure I've even heard Australian Drill music. As we're closing out 2017, it's high time we have a mix that will properly showcase the good hip-hop that dropped this year, on both sides of the Atlantic. DJ Cable's a certified favorite here at RTD for tracks like this. The UK-based DJ/producer/label head has an edge up on most, considering that he's a nimble-fingered DJ who knows how to properly slide in between the worlds of hip-hop and grime to create truly unique tunes for the heads on both sides. Riddle me this: who else would take the sample from East Flatbush Project's "Tried By 12" and turn it into this diced-up UK grime mastrerpiece? Add emcees Reece West and Grim Sickers to the mix and it's MURDAH!

Cable's not only giving away the vocal for "Work," but he's also giving you the instrumental, all for the free. What more could you truly as for?

DJ Cable Turned 'More Life' Into a Proper Mixtape

Off the rip, Drake made sure that people knew his new release More Life wasn't called an "album." Most people thought that meant it was a mixtape, while he was calling it a "playlist." It has a mixtape feel, but isn't mixed, so our UK bredren DJ Cable decided to actually mix it, turning More Life into More Mixed. Smart.

If you love hip-hop, there seem to have been two constants when it comes to year-end reviews: Skillz and his "Rap Up" series, and DJ Cable's year-end mixtapes. The UK turntable wizard is back with "2016 AD," a new three-and-a-half hour(!) mixtape featuring over 130(!!) tracks. The biggest and brightest of 2016 rap is here, including material from Drake, Young M.A, Kanye West, YG, DJ Khaled, Rae Sremmurd, Pusha T, Future, and many, many more. He even throws in some UK flavors, among others.

DJ Cable Presents the Best of Old School Grime

A while ago, I asked DJ Cable if he could sort out some classic UK grime tunes for me. I'd been getting into the grime scene, but had no history. He laced me with a grip of tracks, really proving that he's an authority on this thing. While he rocks with his Triangulum imprint, showcasing the future of the grime scene, he's also a historian, so him dropping this "Best of Old School Grime" mix is perfect.

Throughout this 36-track trek, Cable manages to squeeze in tracks from DJ Marsta, Jammer, SLK, Kano, and many, many more; "some obvious, some not so obvious" as Cable puts it. He also mentioned that he has a boatload more that could've fit in this mix, so be on the lookout for a possible Volume 2...or Volume 3!

DJ Cable Powers Through Over One Hundred of 2015's Best Rap Tracks in '2015 A.D.'

Can't let 2015 go? Neither can I. While I complain about (or just outright avoid) a lot of the fuck shit that happens year-to-year, I really dug a lot of what happened musically in 2015. One of my favorite DJs, DJ Cable, has his ear to the clubs, streets, and Internets, and this year did a magnificent job of remembering the year that was with 2015 A.D., which features over 100 of the finest hip-hop tracks from 2015, making for a ferocious four-hour trek. Just hit play and live your life to this.
