This Is Thugstep

Glad this one is finally out. A few years ago, DJ Nappy, myself and some of our compatriots in this THUGSTEP thing were discussing the need for a definitive mixtape/compilation for the THUGSTEP genre that we've been flying the flag for. The idea got swept under the rug, and the vision you see in the cover came to me. I had always had a folder of cuts that typified this dubstep/Hip-Hop hybrid and wanted to showcase some of those, along with a number of other blends, refixes and original tracks that have popped up over the last five years. This tape starts out properly with DJ Nappy's "Act A Fool" blend of Coki and Lil Jon, which was the first THUGSTEP refix ever done. We touch a number of other favorites, including Caspa remixing Ludacris and Redman on different cuts, Gimpmode (RIP) blending Emalkay and Gucci Mane, Bare reworking Wiz Khalifa's "Black & Yellow", Snoop Dogg coasting over Chase & Status' "Eastern Jam", a Weezy cut that's my personal favorite and the mighty "Flocka Riddim" from DJ Cable and Fused Forces. Hell, the insane WTF?! flip of dead prez's "Hip Hop" is even included. And this is only the beginning. Planning on keeping these compilations dropping in the summer of 2012, so by the time it's over, there should be NO QUESTION of what THUGSTEP is. Joker vs. Slim Thug & Bun B “The Vision (DJ Cable THUGSTEP Refix)”: Been sleeping on posting these for some reason, but after Cable’s Video Scratch noodling produced a spot-on blend video of these two tracks, I figured some of you smart selectors needed this refix in your life. Taking a vintage Slim Thugga single and pairing it up with the first glimpse from Joker’s forthcoming album? I could see niggas in Houston bouncing their candy painted whips to something like this, syrup’d out, leanin’ low. I’d make about fifty ‘leven posts on Cable’s latest mailout, but I’ll just post the link to the .zip, which not only features an Aphex Twin edit, but unreleased heat from Fused Forces, Dcult and another Cable blend! Fused Forces & DJ Cable "Flocka Riddim"

Fused Forces & DJ Cable "Flocka Riddim": I hate being like this, but sometimes I love who I'm friends with. This riddim, cooked up by flipping some Flocka-isms from "Hard In The Paint", has been sitting on my external in some form since November of last year, and I think Cable started passing this one around over the last few weeks. Shit's boss - and is one of my favorite Grime flips of a Hip-Hop idea. The nigga Waka Flocka is supreme remedial life, and one of my favorite things about UK music is when they take something I'm comfortable with and totally retwerk it. Part of the reason I mess with DnB, dustep and Grime like I do. Fucks with this, and if you're an MC who spits to this, please let me know!

Fused Forces Cold Turkey EP

During the Christmas weekend, the homies over at Substance Abuse released a free EP from two sick producers I have the privilege to converse with, Fused Forces. These two deal with my boy DJ Cable a lot, and make some sick dubstep and Grime tunes. I wish I could leak some of the stuff I have, but for now, this four-track BANGER is what you need to dissect. What I love is that these four tracks actually showcase four different sounds – nothing like a dubstep producer who will continuously throw out the SAME basstones or whatever. We go from the more subtle cuts (“Molten Rock”) to the sinister crackers (“Time Perception”) to cuts like “Sabotage”, which is reminiscent of the sounds that made me first fuck with dubstep. Whether you’re trying to spice up your sets or just throw on something dope from someone you might not be up on, grab this EP. Happy Holidays!
