Aphex Twin "Avril 14th (Terravita Drumstep Remix)"

SUBHMAN is always good for a free bit, and this one was purely unexpected. While most of my time here is taken up by Hip-Hop, I'm a big fan of Drum & Bass and dubstep, as well as their bastard child Drumstep, and Terravita is good with the more dancefloor-tinged style of all three genres. The fact that he flipped a classic Aphex Twin track in a drumstep vein was completely unexpected. AFX always had a knack for hypnotic, somber melodies, and to hear Terravita flip one of those into a bright anthem is just what I need on a bullshit work day like today. I needed this.

Disc Jockey Nappy Eighty Eight

The funny thing about digital mixing software is how the higher BPMs register. Drumstep is a funny category - while it's essentially halftime Drum & Bass, it's in a weird zone - the BPM mixes perfect with DnB, but is really about 88 BPM, especially when ran through Serato. In any case, this latest expedition from DJ Nappy flows in that 88BPM range... or 170BPM, depending on what you're rocking. Special mix of DnB/Drumstep here, featuring cuts from the likes of Kitech, Camo & Krooked, Mr. Joseph, Need For Mirrors, Dub Foundation and plenty more. Loads of favorites here, as well as some bits you might not be up on. Flying fast and furious, and the perfect bit to set your weekend ablaze.

Those Evol Intent boys come CORRECT with their latest mix. Damn near 60 (!!) tracks in a little over 72 minutes, featuring many styles (although mostly DnB, dubstep and all forms in between) from some of your favorite artists. The Clipse ft. Slim Thug vs. Original Sin "Wamp Wamp (What It Do) (Disc Jockey Nappy Drumstep Refix)"

Usually, we get shit early. We've been getting shit early for over a decade - it's just how Nappy and I roll. This week, test presses of Original Sin's You Love It EP dropped. This news is important, as a tune entitled "I Love It", his latest drumstep cut is on there. DJ Hype's been teasing this on his show since Halloween 2010, and this one has the potential to become the drumstep anthem of 2011. Just so aggressive - some real no nonsense shit. Nappy no sooner got the tune then he hit me with some "meet me in 5 minutes" shit, and Superman'd this refix. Clipse's flow on this fits perfect over this fury, even though their wamp wamp is leather smooth. Pyrex prophets going ham over nasty bass? Wamp wamp.

Wake yo punk ass up! This mix has been sitting around for a bit, for no good reason, so I'm glad Hipnotikk hit me up and asked if we could drop this future thinkin' tape to all of you freaks out there. FOTM: THUGSTEP #32

Gotta love how shit works. DJ Nappy has been getting acquainted with the sounds of now, and has been bitten by the Drumstep bug - I'm sorry. It's dope b/c with all of the acapellas out there, the Drumstep tempo lends itself well for his brand of refixin', so cats like Dub Foundation are right up the nigga's alley. Their recent EP, Mr. Blonde, features two versions of their "Time To Burn" tune - one in a Drumstep vibe, the other in a DnB crawl. Nappy being Nappy flipped the Drumstep version first:

Rich Boy - D Boyz (Disc Jockey Nappy vs. Dub Foundation Drumstep Mix) by djnappy

And guess what? I asked for him to throw the same vocal over the Rich Boy, and it works just as nice. Dancefloor destruction like that? Like that.

[preview] DJ SOLO "Apache Zombie Deathkill"

Hah, the homey SOLO likes sending exclusives that I can't download. This is a fierce "Apache"-sampling drumstep tune that "is an original production based on a movie I have in my head about Native American Zombies rising from the dead and taking back America". Sounds like some shit Tarantino should use in an homage to zombie flicks.

Cutline - Annie Nightingale Guest Mix (12/17/2010)

Jeryl, who owns Infectious PR, is one half of Cutline, and is just an all-around dope guy, is one of my favorite people in the world. Dope personality, talented on a number of points, and just great individual. With his boy Danny, they've gone on a number of (ad)ventures within the industyr, and their Cutline guise has scored a number of wins, including remixes that have been signed for Hospital and Infrared. A little over a week ago, BBC Radio 1's Annie Nightingale pressed play on a guest mix they did for her show, and I've been itching to post. It's the bees knees, and something you genre-benders need to get into your life. Enjoy.

Beyonce ft. Jay-Z vs. Document One x Heist "Upgrade U (DJ Nappy THUGSTEP Refix)"

Beyonce ft. Jay-Z vs. Document One x Heist "Upgrade U (DJ Nappy THUGSTEP Refix)": Sometimes, a riddim is too good to leave be. Drumstep is an emerging style, and this Heist remix of Document One's "Forgive Me" straddles the line between proper aggression and stunning beauty, which is kind of what Beyonce had going when "Upgrade U" dropped. Her, all curves and sultry womanhood, wanted to flex her chi all over your life, upping the ante on your own cool. It's an awesome blend, and when Hov touches down after the breakdown in the middle? My lawd.

To further represent that THUGSTEP flag, 51:51 dropped a dope chat with Nappy yesterday, which includes a SICK B.o.B. vs. Girl Unit THUGSTEP Refix exclusive to 51:51! There's also an interview up at The Art of Storytelling, with a dope look into Nappy's mind and how this THUGSTEP shit started!

You should be good with that right now, right?

Crissy Criss - 30 Minute Drumstep Mix (10/28/2010)

As he's known to do, the one like Crissy Criss took to the decks during this week's 1Xtra D&B M1X Show and dropped a nasty 30 minute drumstep mix. Drumstep is a hybrid sound, kind of like dubstep made at a DnB tempo. Lots of the wild, heavy bass but with a halftime drumbeat. It's easier to understand when you hear it rather than explaining it. Crissy featured some of my favorite drumstep tunes, but I think a three deck mix might've been a bit much in some spots. Glad someone finally did a proper full mix of this sound. Check it out.

Pretty special edition of MistaJam's radio show, featuring Magnetic Man's Maida Vale live session, a mini mix from Crissy Criss and some other bits. If I was on the radio, this would be the kind of show I'd be doing.

[preview] Heist "I Need Killers"

I first heard this sick sick SICK tune on Heist's Sumo Beatz Podcast #1, and was immediately floored. I don't get too deep into labels and such, but this "drumstep" craze has me hooked. Criss Criss and Youngman have a "drumstep" mix of their "Kick Snare" tune coming on Technique, but this was the first tune from that genre that really had me going:

Heist - I Need Killers [radio rip]

So menacing. DJ Cable said it made him want to smash up his furniture. Sick tune. And you might've heard Skream rinse the dubstep edit of this one:

Heist - I Need Killers (140 Edit) [radio rip]

I need more tunes like this in my life.
