rockthedub radio (July. 2018)

I KNOW, I KNOW; I said we'd be doing this month to month, and then dropped the ball back in the Spring. That's my bad. Either way, we're back bringing you our favorites from July of 2018, with an added bonus: drum & bass maestro Jaxtella has returned with a massive mix of treats from last month, featuring everyone from Social Misfits to Need For Mirrors. Of course, I also drop a hodge podge selection of cuts from Blood Orange, DJ Earl, Curren$y and more before him. Hopefully we've returned to form. Don't beast me up.

rockthedub radio: March 2018 Edition

It's not that often that an episode of RTDR lands on this site's birthday, but that's where we're at in 2018. We're talking motherfucking 12(!) years of this site being a thing in some way, shape, or form. We used to do free compilations, but the kids apparently don't download music anymore, so here's a fire hour-ish worth of our favorite tracks from the month of March.

In this edition, we've got a pretty wide variety of material here. Brand spanking new material from The Weeknd, Logistics, and DJ ESCO (alongside Nas and Future) as well as a stellar cut from Blocks & Escher's new album on Metalheadz, cuts from Pac Div, Riko Dan, Ross From Friends, and the homey DJ Taye. You know how WE do.

rockthedub radio: February 2018 Edition

We're back with our favorites from February; sorry for the delay. There's a boatload of lit rap to start, with new material from YG, Nipsey Hussle, SOB X RBE, and that BlocBoy JB featuring Drake song. We also get into some feisty electronic beats, including new drum & bass from Hybris, Bensley, and Need For Mirrors, as well as gems from Wiley, S-Type, and the Foreign Beggars.

rockthedub radio: January 2018 Edition

It's been a minute, but we're back with the first episode of rockthedub radio of 2018. What's crazy is there's a couple of demo mixes sitting somewhere that are on some wild shit, but after figuring out what made the most sense right now, we're trying something out now: one hour shows, roughly 30 minutes of hip-hop along with another set of dance music, all strictly from the month that was. New material from Detboi, Jean Grae & Quelle Chris, EQ Why, R3LL and many more.

rockthedub radio 037: A New Beginning

Did you know that rockthedub radio began 10 years ago this month? It's been a wild time exploring the world of making a "radio" show with a bunch of music, some rudimentary skills in audio software, and no real skills. It's been modest at best, but I know that those of you who rock with the kid REALLY rock with the kid.

I have some plans that I'm working on, which mean taking things to the next level, so expect more episodes of rockthedub radio to be like this: my voice(!) on the mic, more structured segments, and MORE. Just fucking MORE.

This episode was recorded about a week after 4:44 was released, so we open with the title track but touch on a number of sounds, ranging from a Prodigy tribute to a number of bass and footwork tunes from DJ Rashad, Lunice, EPROM, and more.

Shouts to anyone who's checked for the series, anyone who's sent music that ended up on the show, and anyone who still rocks witcha boy. If you're a DJ and want to send a mix that could be featured on the show, or are an artist that would like to be featured, shoot me your details: rockthedub@gmail.com.

rockthedub radio 036: The Purge

Crazy to think one of these hasn't happened since Christmas 2016. Actually, it isn't that crazy; shit's been busy around here. I did make a move recently that'll manifest itself on this here podcast...and beyond.

On this set, I did two things: one, I took my love for certain black YouTubers and constructed a narrative in the first chunk of this podcast, featuring material I've loved from Roc Marciano, Quelle Chris, Deal - The Villain, DANGERDOOM, and others. One the flipside, I felt the Purge of the first section was complimented perfectly by Son Raw's RTDMIX, which is a headfuck of a trek through the '90s hip-hop sound, but in a more underground lens. Trust we.

rockthedub radio: Xmas Special 2016

rockthedub-radio-xmas-special-2016
Image via New York Daily News

With the last edition of rockthedub radio dropping in time for Thanksgiving, it made sense that we drop a special edition for Christmas Day, right? While I may not be the first Black Santa Claus (at the Mall of America), I come bearing gifts.

What's wild is I love Christmas music...with a twist. You know how we do around here; it's about the original, but it's also how you flipped it. I have a fucked up sense of humor, and like being on brand but throwing curveballs. Hence why the only Home Alone reference here is to a grime beat, or that Donny Hathaway's classic "This Christmas" gets touched by RoddyRod. Or that I drop some old OFWGTKA fuck Christmas vibes in here, just because. These are a number of my favorite leftfield Christmas jams that I've been collecting, for you, in one ~52 minute package.

Other featured acts include Coldcut, St. Joe Louis, the Treacherous Three, Oh No, and more. Perfect for getting toasty due to a new bottle of hard liquor, or via the blazing of some tree. You know the routine.

rockthedub radio 035: Blanksgiving

You seen that burnt tf up turkey? That's how a good chunk of America felt post-election 2016. I had to go to bed before the results were in, but I already knew what was going down. Most of you? Devastated. We're still here, though, and instead of pouting or crying or trying to figure out the shoulda/coulda/woulda, let's spring into action. This new edition of rockthedub radio? That's me springing into action, fresh for Thanksgiving.

This mix has a bit of a slant; it's definitely political, featuring motivating material from A Tribe Called Quest, Common, and Run The Jewels, but I also had to throw in a grip of new-ish material. New cuts from Rapsody, Boogie, Dumbfoundead, and Silent Knight play the middle, mirroring thoughts without being too heavy handed, and I had to include some fresh material as well, so expect some straight-up lit material from Leaf and that new Gucci Mane x Lil Uzi Vert mixtape.

Hopefully, you're able to cope with a family member at your Thanksgiving table talking stupid shit regarding the election. If not, here's ~66 minutes of music to help you tune them out. Have at it.

rockthedub radio 034: Birthday Beatings

Still in that mode where "if it's (almost) my birthday, you guys get some gifts," although I'm not sure how many of you wanted a new episode of rockthedub radio. Either way, there were some jams that I had to throw into a podcast—like that new Lil Yachty and Gucci Mane—alongside some shit that made me laugh (like that "Norf Norf" rant and a hilarious reaction from D&B Nation). Jidenna's "Long Live the Chief" is in there because Luke Cage, and there are some other bits in here, too.

rockthedub radio 033: Electronic AF

This week, we do things a little differently. Instead of being two hours of wall-to-wall hip-hop, we take things into more of a electronic lane. Why? Well, I'm hoping people haven't slept on the RTDMIX series that started earlier this month. Also, I've been on a grime kick.

For the first half hour, I drop in a bunch of new material, featuring Kemba, ScHoolboy Q, and Desiigner, but then dipped into more of a grime ting with Trim, The Bug, and Flowdan, before rounding things out properly. I then slapped on the new mixes from Dev79 and Reid Speed, and I want more of you to get acquainted with our other podcast series. Sue me.

When you're done suing me, subscribe to rockthedub radio on iTunes.

rockthedub radio 032: Muhammad Ali Special

Over the last few days, I'd been going through a number of the mixes that I was doing for a five-year period from 2006 through 2011. In that time, we had many Dub Sessions and rockthedub radio shows, of varying quality, and I wanted to get back into that. Part of the reason I started really digging into the rockthedub Mixcloud page. There's a true plan for all of this, I swear.

With Muhammad Ali's passing, I got the bug and wanted to combine some of my favorite talking bits from him over the years with some of the hip-hop I've been digging over the last few years. This isn't like a definitive statement on Ali's life, but it does feature some of his humor mixed with some of his deeper insight, along with some Easter eggs hidden throughout. Something fun and honest to help remember The Greatest by. Rest in peace, Muhammad Ali.

And as an FYI, don't expect these radio programs to be on some kind of consistent basis. If they happen monthly right now, we'll be lucky. It's hard to believe I used to do two-hour rockthedub radio shows on a bi-weekly basis. I will have more to come, though, trust that.

rock the dub radio: episode 031

No excuses. Well, a shitload of excuses, mainly lack of time or energy to knock a new episode of rock the dub radio out. Haven't had a new one since December of '08, and that was my fault. This episode was supposed to be two things: one, it was to highlight my favorite tracks of 2008, and it was to serve as an ode to a fallen soldier, Snoop. I got the first hour done a while ago, and it did both things... but I never sat down to finish hour two. Hour two is just a dumb out, with me throwin' in some joints from the last few weeks that have gotten 'nuff play on my way back and forth to work. And it concludes the Snoop saga. Your thoughts...

rock the dub radio, episode 030

This latest edition of rock the dub radio runs at two hours, 24 minutes. I had to... in brainstorming for this edition, I wanted to have it be strictly 2008 beats with Barack Obama speeches over top (after getting this ill MP3-CD of Obama speeches from wifey - early Christmas present FTW). After I a) realized I didn't have a lot of dope instrumentals as well as b) realizing I was getting sent some ill songs, I decided to only flip two Obama speeches, which boiled over my usual two hour time limit. So, expect to hear more "commercial" beats ("Swagga Like Us", "Get Like Me", "They Know", etc.) under his 2008 DNC Acceptance speech, with some more underground/below the radar instrumentals ("Royal Flush", "Gangsta Boy", "We Roll", etc.) under his "A More Perfect Union" speech. We also feature two new cuts from Elucid, that fresh StreetMedia, and an exclusive, hot off the press remix of Lush One & Phillipdrummond's "Reggie At The Bus-Stop", from my VA homey Perpetuum. By the way, you should cop that Music For Dope Runs album; its definitely some sick shit from this Fresh Coast duo.

rock the dub radio: episode 029

This mix came about mad piecemeal. Two weeks ago, I had the mix from tracks 6-24 done. I then finished the tail-end and added an intro this past Black Friday, with a 40 of OE and no direction. I don't think anyone cares, but I think it came out kind of ill. I threw a few comedic interludes in there for no good reason. I think I'm gonna do a special show with no rapping but mad beats. Soon come. Probably sometime in Jan. 2009...

This is the official "My President Is Black" episode. Some highlights include "Barack Omilli", aka Barack Obama's Election Night Speech x the instrumental for "A Milli", with Jay-Z's "A Billi" freestyle tacked on for good measure. I also dropped the Block Obama Mini Mix DJ Cable did for RTD, because it needed to be in there. Other favs include a few presidential J-Zone joints, some Loosie affiliates, Jay-Z's "History" cut, and Ruthless Bastards for my boy SBK. Pee game:

rock the dub radio: episode 026

For a while, rock the dub radio was on hiatus... I hadn't gone fishin', but I was on some other shit - mainly rockin' Dogs On Acid content and other jobs that may or may not be complete. And working out a digital label as well. In any case, I had this mix (or, shall I say, an hour and a half of this mix) sitting on my external since early August, and finally finished it on Friday, with a bokkle of OE and determination. You can tell based on the selection, but whatever. I think this is one of the more flowing mixes I've thrown out in a while.

I had a busy weekend and din't think I'd get a chance to do this, then suddenly around 11PM Friday night, I got hit with some inspiration. I wonder why cats are doing remixes of M.I.A.'s "Paper Planes" NOW!? In any case, loads of freestyles that I dug dropped in the last few weeks, so I included my favorites, alongside from fresh flavors from the likes of the GZA, Spec Boogie, Elucid, Nov Ganon, A.R.M., Amanda Diva, Big Boi, Rhymefest and others, including the full version of Joe Budden's "Who". Check it!
