RIP junclassic

Damn. This one hurts; it always hurts when someone I know passes, especially when the word comes out of nowhere, but damn, I really rocked with junclassic. I don't remember how we first linked up; back when we were really rocking over here, emails would just hit the inbox on the regular. Hell, I was getting mail sent to the crib. Thing is, jun still sent his albums. I have a few CDs sitting around somewhere; he was always working, and was always looking out.

Back in 2009, Kid Hum allowed me to let a bunch of dope emcees rap over beats from his Fossil Fuels instrumental album; when I was reaching out to folks for the tracks that would become Offshore Drilling, I feel like jun was one of the first cats to submit tracks. Hell, he has two solo joints on the project, and he made sure to throw in "you gotta rock the dub, baby." I never asked; that's just how he was. Stand-up individual. Hard worker. Dope as fuck with the pen. Dare I say one of the more prolific artists I've ever come across.

jun is also all over The KhemLab, the spiritual sequel to Offshore Drilling if you will; one of my personal favorites is the J57-produced "Khemistry," which finds junclassic kicking the final verse. I always loved the last line of his verse: "keep ya shit tighter than African hair braiding." jun was always ready with a tight verse, a dope project, and his warm spirit, always down to rep for the culture.

You will be missed, jun, although it looks like you have a project dropping Friday, so you'll definitely still be with us. Rest easy.

Junclassic Releases "The Soul Thief" EP

While Rap Twitter has gone in on this Drake vs. Meek Mill beef today, it's dope to have great artists pushing ill music. The homey Junclassic sent over his Soul Thief EP, which he says is "a passionate excursion through the 'hood detailing the trials and tribulations of the urban environment and one's ambition to thrive despite being surrounded by despair and discouragement."

So while others are either chiming in on the convo or spending their nights slandering those chiming in on the convo, you can at least have a fire soundtrack to go along with it.

Chance ft. junclassic "Good"

Well shit. Talk about out of nowhere. Not sure if Chance and jun knew each other before, but they bring their own distinct voices to this throwback loop. Motherfuckin' right. Loving how this one rolls out. Some shit to take long swigs of 'gac, straight from the bottle. Not sure what more is to come of this, but enjoy this while it lasts. Get clean to this one.

The fifth annual Yule Prog progressive Hip-Hop festival goes down this Thursday (December 8th) at Southpaw in Brooklyn, NY. These shows always feel like a RTD reunion, but this year it's even iller: You've got Meyhem Lauren, Billy Woods, junclassic, Willie Green, Elucid x AM breakups, Lyle Horowitz (who will have Elucid, Fresh Daily AND PreZZure with him), Adam Warlock, Open Mike Eagle and plenty more on the bill. I'm gonna figure out how to get involved at some point. Don't miss this one. Pre-order your tickets today, and get two free CDs when you enter the venue. No bullshit.

J.Slikk - The Plan 2 Escape

Before dropping Escapism in 2Q 2012, J.Slikk flips a dope compilation of 13 tracks, featuring some unreleased cuts, mixtape jawns, new tracks, instrumentals and other cuts from guys like Cyrano, Junclassic, R.O.E., Rashid Hadee, SteadyFlow and plenty more. I've heard a number of these tracks before, so to hear a lot of these with vocals atop? Major. Awesome work. Don't even think about sleeping.

Cyrano Sinatra x Dub MD - Madicinal Libationz 2

You guys might remember Madicinal Libationz, the Cy Yung & Dub MD project that found Cyrano going in over a number of Madlib instrumentals. The powers-that-be shut that one down, so Cy and Dub decided to reimagine this one; I'll let them tell it...

Cyrano Sinatra (f.k.a. Cyrano aka Cy Yung) has reconnected with Dub MD to help remove a blemish from their immaculate first collaboration, 2009's 'Madicinal Libationz'. After assembling one of the most diverse casts of Hip-Hop underground at the time, 'Madicinal Libationz' was received with praise but ran into roadblocks to reaching as many as it could have, but this 'Bitchless Brew' will not have that problem.

The 'B*tchless Brew' features production from one of the UK's best kept secrets, Magic-Boy, Cyrano's familia, Centric, J. Slikk, Cynergy Soundz and Sharpcuts and extended fam from NC Hip-Hop's stash of heatrock-makers, this is what should have been! Brought to you by Kevin Nottingham and RockTheDub. The project is minus a few choice cuts that will make their remix appearance for the forthcoming Anniversary edition.

No better way for Dub MD to say farewell to his freely-given, classic co-sign mixtape series than with this re-invention project, a return to the buffet of lyrical wordplay Cy dropped in April of 2009. And this is only the beginning, Cyrano and Dub MD will continue to keep the flame of Underground Hip-Hop lit. Sinatra's 2012 will feature more from his 2-man group Steadyflow (with Sharp), as well as complete projects produced by Centric, J. Slikk, DJ Husky, DJ J-Rell and Doc Verbz.

This will be also be Dub MD's final "FREE" artist project, stay tuned over the next couple of months his official debut EP entitled "The Requiem" which features the best sub-surface hip-hop has to offer including Vandalyzm, Substantial, Sha Stimuli, Braille, Kam Moye, Spec Boogie, Kel Spencer, 8thW1, Genesis Elijah + more. Along with the exclusive instrumental album "P.U.S.S.Y." with D.C. producer Judah and Universal Indie Records.

rockthedub presents The KhemLab

Finally. It's been two years since Kid Hum and RTD dropped Offshore Drilling. Two years since guys like Cy Yung, Whygee, Sky 7th, junclassic and others joined forces with Main Course, Deal - The Villain, The Jake and a merry band of features (including the one like Nico The Beast) aligned themselves as The KhemLab. Two years of starts and stops, and finally a powerful push over the last few months to get this done. And it's here. 20 tracks full of raw lyrics, tough beats and a bevy of topics, ranging from murder fantasies to cuts devoted to needing new kicks.

I'm excited for you guys to hear this project in it's entirety, mainly because it started from nothing and became something I'm truly enjoying. The crew also flips cuts from Diamond District and DJ Concept & DJ Mickey Knox' BYOP EP, alongside a serious grip of original beats - shouts to Anno Domini, Centric, Four Finger Ring, Sharp, 2 Deep, J57 and the rest of the 'Lab. But enough from me - take this journey with us.

Don your labcoats and help us decipher this thing called Hip-Hop, and experiment with what the music can really become.

The KhemLab "Put It To Rest"

Been a minute since I started talking about The KhemLab, a conglomerate of MCs that features cats from the Offshore Drilling project, as well as some additions, and over a number of starts and stops, we're proud to say that the project will be dropping next month. Don't ask for a day yet, doe. If you're like me, you've been living with a migraine. Just feel like there's a lot that are on our plates, and there's a bunch of bullshit trying to clog the pipeline of progress. Kind of like this project. What'd these guys do, though? Put their nose to the grindstone, set their sights on the prize and annihilated anything standing in their way. Main Course, junclassic and Sky 7th took this theme and beasted over this 2 Deep production. Love the drums in this one, really tough, and I'm a sucker for piano loops. There's a lot more heat on this KhemLab project, trust. You've been warned.
