Coldcut and Adrian Sherwood Inna Dub Meltdown

coldcut

I don't know if I've said it before, but I'll damn sure say it again: if it wasn't for the work Coldcut has put in over the years, I'm not sure if I'd be as well-versed in the sounds of the world as I have been. These two DJs have been doing it for decades, finding a way to go from being the cut-up masters to exposing the world to numerous sounds; everything from hip-hop to jazz to jungle to reggae has fallen under their razors, being sliced, diced, and ultimately dissected by lovers of sound like myself.

To celebrate the release of their new EP Only Heaven (which features the likes of Roses Gabor, Roots Manuva, and the mighty Switch), these two decided to hit the weekly Solid Steel radio show with a reggae-fied, dub-wise hour of a mix, featuring cuts from Lee "Scratch" Perry, King Tubby, The Upsetters, and many more. Not to leave anyone else out, they aligned with the legend Adrian Sherwood, who runs On-U Sound and has worked with Coldcut, Pinch, and others, helping put his stamp on the UK dub/reggae scene. Adrian took over Hour 2 with "a selection of unreleased ,forthcoming and relatively unknown and difficult to find On-U Sound productions / co-productions and a taster of the Coldcut/Onu collaboration , plus a Dub Plate from Ireland's finest, RiRa."

You can stream and download both mixes after the jump

Caught In The Middle of A 3-Way Mix: DJ Cheeba, DJ Moneyshot & DJ Food

DJ Cheeba, DJ Moneyshot and DJ Food did something magical for this week's Solid Steel show: "Solid Steel in association with Serato (31st August) 3 years ago Solid Steel DJs Cheeba, Moneyshot and Food had the idea of collaborating on a version of the Beastie Boys‘ ‘Paul’s Boutique’ album made entirely from the original sample sources, shortly after Moneyshot aired his mix of their ‘Check Your Head’ album in the same way.

Finally the result is here, titled ‘Caught In The Middle Of A 3-Way Mix’ - each of them have taken a third of the album to work on and combined their efforts into a mix that will make you hear it in a new way. Aside from the original sample sources they’ve included commentary from the Beasties, vintage interviews, demo versions and much more.

The mix was over half way completed when they heard the tragic news of MCA‘s death in May so the impetus to finish it was instantly doubled and new meaning given to the project. It goes without saying that this is also a tribute to Adam Yauch and the legacy he left behind and we hope it will be embraced by Beastie fans around the globe."

DJ Kentaro ft. DJ Krush "Kikkake (Reso Remix)"

On August 6th, Kentaro drops his Contrast LP via Ninja Tune. This tune "Kikkake" intrigues me, as it's a wild dubstep banger... featuring DJ Krush. I know there are cuts on the track, but I'm not sure if Krush had anything to do with the production of the tune. Just questions I have. The album is a cavalcade of EDM styles, with Foreign Beggars, D-Styles, Matrix & Futurebound, Kid Koala and more contributing, and to help entice you guys to cop it, they've given away a Reso remix of "Kikkake". Raucous cut here, stepping the tune up and doing a better job at a remix than The Qemists did. Sorry. Download via Ninja Tune.

Toddla T ft. Shola Ama "Alive (Dismantle Remix)"

Mixmag got the exclusive on this one, taken from Toddla T's new single on Ninja Tune. Love what the kid Dismantle is doing. It works in dubstep sets, but the kids on the floor will be sweating their asses off to this far quicker than Skream or Benga bangers. Toddla T is a don in his own right, but I think Dismantle merked this one. This shit isn't even due out until August, but I figure the festivals will be rinsed by this one before release.

Coldcut "Say Kids What Time Is It?"

The first single on Coldcut's Ninja Tune imprint was the seminal "Say Kids What Time Is It?", a slap-happy cut and paste masterpiece. It dropped on the 1st of February in 1987, and turned 25 years young today. Ninja Tune let this white label be available for free download. Praise Jah. This is the kind of cut-up music I was rockin' to in high school.

Solid Steel (8/26/2011)

Had to post this one. Solid Steel's gone and let DK rock the first hour, and allowed motherfucking Skream drops in for the second hour, with a special mix of his influences (featuring everything from Prince to The Bucketheads). Love mixes like this that truly showcase what someone feels represents in the new shit they create. Enjoy this one.

DJ Food "'88 Was Great, But '89 Was Mine"

This is a proper treat; Strictly Kev of DJ Food says "I was recently asked to play a night called Classic Material in London. The idea for the club is to give each month over to a year from Hip Hop's past and only play tracks released during it. I was given 1989 and this set was all done from original vinyl". Full tracklist after the jump.

Andreya Triana "Far Closer (Mr Scruff Remix)"

Andreya Triana "Far Closer (Mr Scruff Remix)": The other day, I was on Dogs On Acid and saw a post regarding our favorite artists on Ninja Tune. I’m a very big fan of their pre-2000 stuff – when I couldn’t find music that fit my taste/need in sound, cats like The Herbaliser, DJ Food and Coldcut filled a void. I said my 1-2 in the post, but forgot to mention Mr. Scruff! Oddly enough, I’ve had this “Far Closer” single for a bit, and while it drops on the 7th of February, I had to throw this one out there. One of my favorite tracks of 2010 was a Mala remix of an Andreya Triana tune, and this track is an early fav in the new year. Scruffiness comes with a bouncy bass, with some perfect clicks and bleeps, adding to the funk of the main line. Her voice is awesome, and is oddly suited for these leftfield excursions, you dig? For those who need to know, the “Far Closer” single features the radio edit (with is a Bonobo production), and alongside the Scruff remix and a live version, Tokimonsta also lent a lounge funk remix to the package. Great addition to Ninja Tune’s immense catalog.
