Rich Quick - "Sad Songz" EP [preview]

Back in November of 2012, we put you on to Rich Quick's Sad Songz EP (which is out on August 20 via Ben Frank Recordings), which was a true departure for the NJ/Philly spitter. He's been everything from that boy on the stoop to that king in the cipher, and this feels like he's trying to show more of the man behind the sunglasses, cassette tape, and skully. He's not totally becoming "alternative," just bearing more his soul.

The Combat Jack Show: Spike Lee

Via TheCombatJackShow: "Spike Lee talks about the controversy behind his Kickstarter campaign, the ills of gentrification in his beloved Brooklyn, his relationship with Mike Tyson, why Halle Berry is the actor he’s most proud of putting on, why he still hasn’t seen ‘Django Unchained’, his instrumental role in making Jordans the hottest sneaker ever made, what ever happened to Matty Rich, why Michael Jordan now wears mom jeans, how his movies (like his upcoming ‘Old Boy’) is getting bloodier, and a whole lot of other ish. It’s easy to take this man for granted, but looking at the impact he’s had on our culture, we gotta do the right thing and give Mars Blackmon his props.

Support Spike Lee’s Kickstarter for his new flick here."

Rich Quick - "Happy I'm Here"

It was great seeing the homey Rich Quick at the Jersey Fresh Jam this weekend, but I felt bad because this single had been sitting in my inbox for a minute (well, a few days, but you know how I do). Produced by NJ Hip-Hop veteran Shawn Lov, Rich does what he does best: Keeping it real without keeping it sweet'n'low. Dude is genuinely positive, but nothing is pussy about him at all. One of the more stand-up dudes in the NJ hip-hop scene, it's great to have MCs like him in the area. Grab this for free, and hold tight for the Sad Songz EP, which I'll be previewing in a few days. #LoveLife

Jersey Fresh Jam 2013: The Aftermath

I know, I know, yesterday I said I'd be doing my live-blogging dean. There was something about the Wifi out there, and just wanting to EXPERIENCE, that had me not sitting at my laptop for the duration of yesterday's Jersey Fresh Jam 2013. And I'm glad I didn't.

See, some experiences aren't experiences until they're experienced. Being able to be with my people, taking in the sights and sounds of another Jersey Fresh Jam? You can't put it into words. It's just an amazing time with a creative group of amazing New Jerseyans. From all of the talented graffiti artists (who did everything from painting Hunter S. Thompson to Game of Thrones characters) to the talented acts like Black Collar Biz and the Blackout Kings, Molly Rhythm, Skrewtape (who hit me with a copy of his Skumbag Millionaires album), DEMO, and many others getting on the stage and showing the enormous talent that's housed within the 609 area code. I didn't get to build with EVERYONE I wanted to, but that's for another time. There's just something in the air when NJ hip-hop family gets together.

I won't take too much of your time; I'll let these pictures do the talking. Here is my collection of shots from the Jam, as well as the awesome pics from V2Gphotography (whattup, Venomous?!?!). After the jump, I have (Blackberry) video from the Black Collar Biz and Biz Mighty performances. If I see more, I'll post more. UPDATE Here's the Trentonian's piece on the Jam.

Jersey Fresh Jam 2013: The Calm

Yeah, it's that time again. The 2013 edition of the Jersey Fresh Jam is underway right... now. Head over to Terracycle at 121 New York Ave in Trenton, as the fam is out there doing the damn thing. You've got the best graffiti artists in Jersey, but there are cats coming from all over - this is a DESTINATION SPOT for graffiti writers, and one of the premiere Hip-Hop festivals in the area.

The Combat Jack Show: DMC

Via TheCombatJackShow: "The King Of Rock Darryl McDaniels raps harder than he ever did on this episode, spitting about coming up under the influence of the Cold Crush and the Furious Five, the rise of Run-DMC, the GOAT rap group, alcoholism, being an orphan, the death of Jam Master Jay and the eventual break up of the group. He also talks about his lifelong love for comic books and how he’s about to publish his own under his Darryl Makes Comics company. This interview is guaranteed tougher than leather.
