RIP Steve "Static" Garrett. I saw this the other day over at Idolator (via All Hip-Hop), and now it looks like the Scratch blog over at XXL posted a piece on dude's recent passing to a brain aneurysm. I mean, he was part of the group Playa (remember "Cheers 2 U" and "Don't Stop The Music"?), but this nigga wrote Ginuwine's "Pony", as well as Aaliyah hits like "Are You That Somebody?" and "Rock The Boat" (among others), and is featured on the first single from Lil' Wayne's The Carter III, "Lollipop". Dude even had his own album in the works - hopefully it will come out in some form.

Trenton Crime Mimics The Wire?

Trenton is the capital of New Jersey, and my hometown. It's also being hit with some shit that seems straight out of an episode of The Wire...

Over the last week, two bodies have been found: there was the body of a decomposed woman found in an abandoned home. They believe this woman was previously missing for something like 15 months. No suspects on word as to why she would have been murked, but she did have a history of drug abuse. And just the other day, some nigga got thrown out with the trash. And actually, we've also seen some fucking copper thieves running rampant in the city, which just makes me laugh. And don't even get me started about the 7-year-old who brought 70 grams of crack to school (good thing they arrested his people).

Now, one of the assemblywomen in the city is a fan of The Wire, and commented on this, which is something I had been thinking the last couple of days. The mayor shrugs it off, but is this life imitating art, or is The Wire just that tapped in that it is shedding light on stories that otherwise go unheard?

M Beezy ft. Dirt Dawg "Holton Street Hop": We here at rock the dub are always committed to bringing you that raw when you least expect it, so we get passed things that you might not be up on. Like this, um, dance from Tallahassee, Florida. It's called the "Holton Street Hop", and originates from this M Beezy track that's apparently a remix of some nigga named DJ Chipman's "Beam Ahh". Yeah, this is some picanniny watermelon patch nonsense, but when niggas like Soulja Boy can capitalize off of "Crank Dat", I guess everyone in the South is trying to come up with their own "dance".

There's a clip of a live performance that has this "dance" in it, but I am not sure what is so special about it:


It's funny - niggas won't admit to listening to club music, but will take this bastardized shit and call it something new. And then do some dope-fiend lean to the beat? SMH...

Think Of One Camping Shaâbi [review]

If you are like me, you probably have no idea what the hell Moroccan shaâbi is. It's essentially a popular form of music that has roots in Berber, and is a big hit at many weddings and parties where their irresistible rhythms and youth appeal runs rampant. Think Of One represents Belgium, and in Brussels this Moroccan flavor is all over the airwaves, and has served as the basis for this amazing disc, Camping Shaâbi.

The first thing that caught my ear was "Oppressor", which is like the 4th cut on this disc, but is also the first English-language track on here. It's also one of the only Hip-Hop tracks on here, even if it's more on the lo-fi side of things. Loads of "white collar/black tie" rantings in there. Damn thieves. The other lo-fi offering is "Trap het af", which is more on the grimey Rock side, which isn't normally my stee, but I like how they did it. I actually love the integration of the shaâbi feel in these tracks. The rhythms can take a minute to get a lock on (I believe they are something like 12/8, which makes it hard to find that groove if you are ignorant to the style), but they work well with the various styles. With tracks like "Sharia orabi", which is a slower, jazzy Bossa nova mash, you still get that keen ear for detail, and a nice weaving - nothing that seems forced. There are other times where you are getting hit with electronica, dub, punk and other genres - but it still all comes back to the shaâbi. You can tell when an artist is really loving a style and paying homage, and when they are just mashing for the sake of mashing. Even the more traditional shaâbi cuts on here got me open, although I think I've only heard music like this in movie scores, it is not hard to get your feet tapping, and after a few shots of some good rum, I could see many a cat on the dancefloor, throwing up their hands to some of these riddims.

The only thing that lacks on here, for me, is the lyrics. Or rather, the fact that a lot of it is sung in other tongues. Tracks like the aformentioned "Sharia orabi" sound very seductive, but who knows what they are singing about!? I'm being told that the intro track, "J'étais Jetée", is about an old car that gets recycled as a taxi, but that's lost on me in listening to the cut. It could be anything, and it's danceable, so I don't mind, but I'd love to know what the lyrics are saying, in English. Thing is, it doesn't truly matter - you don't need to know the languages to get into the grooves, and I promise you, if you have an open mind and a feel for some heavily-percussive, extremely danceable tracks, check this disc out.

rock the dub gives Camping Shaâbi 4 out of 5 stars. Yes, I did. It's not something I'd seek out and buy, but I am very happy that I've been introduced to this album. Give it a twirl.

Duck Down News

Duck Down just keeps it moving - whether it's deals with YouTube, ESPN and the History Channel, or just inking dope acts, Buckshot and Dru Ha are just doing it. Here's the new scoop:

KRS-One has officially been signed to Duck Down! It is kind of ill, b/c it seems like KRS was a huge influence on Black Moon (where you think the sample in the hook of "How Many MC's?" came from; plus, the name of the label, Duck Down?) and Duck Down - it's a natural fit. But check it - it looks like Buckshot and KRS are working on an album together! Looks like they will be conversating no the mic, speaking on a range of topics that are important to both Hip-Hop and the world in general, and is highly anticipated by this cat right here. Expect this LP later this year.

In other signing news, DJ Revolution has also inked a deal, and is prepping an album entitled King Of The Decks, and features loads of MCs already, including KRS, Sean Price, Tash, Crooked I, Bishop Lamont, Dilated Peoples, The Alchemist, Royce Da 5'9", Guilty Simpson, DJ Q-Bert, Blaq Poet, DJ Spinbad, Defari, Kidz In The Hall, Buckshot, Bumpy Knuckles and Planet Asia. Many of you, like me, got schooled to Revolution's turntable skills via the World Famous Wake Up Show, and it looks like he is going to try and bring the DJ back into Hip-Hop as an active player, and not the "pseudo-lebrities" he sees many DJs being. Expect King Of The Decks to drop in Fall 2008.

After just reading the write-up in the April '08 XXL about Dru Ha, I love getting more news like this in my inbox. Shouts to Matt for the lookout.

I'm supposed to big you up for having tatoos on your body since age 12? Rapping non-rhyming words (isn't that called spoken word?), fucking bandana folding? Is this forreal? Nigga, not only do you have sickle-cell, but you are about to get sent up for a 3 1/2 year bid, and you want to argue who used the name "Prodigy" first? And to be real with you, The Prodigy was using that name since 1990, so what the fuck are you on? The use of Pro Tools, websites, and all this other shit is just garbage. Straight malarky. Niggas who have to put out a list of reasons why we should give them respect get no love from me. DJ Dolores 1 Real [review]

Before I get into this, let me just say first: I am not the world's leading voice on World Music or House Music, but growing up on the sample-based sounds of Hip-Hop, my ears are a bit more varied and open to new, interesting sounds. And DJ Dolores' 1 Real is certainly that. This, his 3rd album, speaks of the city of Recife in Brazil, where bootleg CDRs that sell for "1 real" help expose the 1 real voice and gritty swagger that comes from poor nations... or, at least that's what comes from the liner notes. The actual music is at times both exciting and monotonous, and chock full of interesting choices.

First off, track 1 ("Deixa Falar", which you can hear via Download.com Music) had me thinking a dog was coming at me. Then I realized it was in the song - which is created to be sort of a "let the journalists define our music, we just make beats" - was meant to do that to you. Let the dogs bark while we have a lark, which is cool. I love the cool House-y thump with those stuttering horns and organ stabs, this track has an ill vibe to it! From there, it's sort of hit-or-miss for me. For every "Wakaru", with it's dubby vibe matched with violins and random splices of speech really works (and is a standout cut for me), but the proto-Jungle/Surf Funk of "Flying Horse" doesn't work for me at all. While I am all for experimentation and taking risks/making statements, a full CD of nothing but genre-blending, seemingly without merit, can grow taxing on the mind. There are two tracks that Dolores created for a European edition of a Wolverine tale ("Mutant Child" and "Saudade") which play perfectly as the soundtrack to Logan's dark paranoia, "Cala Cala" is also a favorite of mine, with the Afrobeat vibe and that 'cala cala' chant is so catchy, not to mention those funked-out horns breathing new life into the track. Really moving music, and while this might not be something you'd expect initially in the dancehall, this somehow would work very well.

At the end of the day, I'm kind of on the fence. While I am very into the idea of twisting many styles and creating almost a melting pot of media, angled at telling a very real story of my people (in the sense of the poor and disenfranchised), it almost becomes overkill, for me. I also wish some of the tracks were longer - 13 tracks (which includes 1 bonus track), clocking in under an hour? You almost wish tracks like "Wakaru" were given more than 3 and a half minutes to breathe, but then again, in the ghettos of the world, many things are snuffed out before their time...

I tip my hat off to DJ Dolores for creating a soundscape aimed at bridging the gaps both musically and socially. Just know what you are getting into before picking this one up.

rock the dub gives 1 Real a 3.5 out of 5 stars. While experimentation and genre-mashing is great, sometimes minimal can be better. Great for fans of World Music or those looking for something a bit unconventional for their CD changers.

And we was gon’ try to move on the top of the year but of course all things considered — we had to really pump the brakes on everything. I had to really reanalyze everything, to figure out exactly how we was going to move forward.

T.R.O.Y.

Just a lil post, brought on by Wes' post about the origins of Erykah Badu's "Telephone".

That shit is real. My grandfather had the same thing going on right before he died...

He was going through it with his prostate cancer, and was relegated to a hospital bed in our house for the last few weeks of his life. It was late May, and my senior year of high school, and I remember it was very warm this one Saturday. And he was up. Now, I had seen him unable to get out of bed b/c of the pain he was in, pissing on himself and what not, but this day he was up, sitting in a chair in his room. And he was talking.

My room was the attic, but the door to my room was right next to his room, so as I'd leave I'd check on him, and I peek in and see him talking and smiling. I step in and he's actually by himself, but mentally he was having a party. All of his friends were there, having a good old time. I sat with him for a bit - there was a basketball game on - and we just talked and joked.

He died a few days after this, but it's wild that he had what I call a going-away party right there.

And now that's two family members in my life who's deaths can be somehow linked to J Dilla. My uncle passed right around the time Dilla did, and now Pop-Pop.

Rest in power.

Jesse McCartney's new single, "Leavin'" (.wma / .rm), is out, and is produced by The-Dream and C. Tricky Stewart, AKA the niggas behind Rihanna's "Umbrella". I always hate things like this; dude, you weren't on this steeze back when your Pop crap was out a few years back. Now you are some proto-Timberlake, coastin' over the flavor of the month? GTFO, dog.

The deep part is, there's probably some truly gifted artist who could have murked this so much better than this paper thin punk, but with McCartney on Hollywood Records (read: Disney), the paper talks. Can't blame Dream & Tricky - the name of the game is dollas, and them niggas go for the publishing before the upfront payments, at least that's what Dream has said in the past. Good for them, but, IMO, bad for the scene. This cat not only had Dream & Tricky, but he is also calling on The Clutch (Omarion, Ciara), J.R. Rotem (Britney Spears, Sean Kingston), Sean Garrett (Usher, Mary J. Blige) and others. Pop/Urban? Fuck you, dog. We see your attempted permeations, and we don't like it.

I hardly watch new films, so the Oscars really don't appeal to me. I was kind of taken aback, however, in reading that Whoopi Goldberg was not included in the "Oscars hosts" montage they produced during Sunday's telecast. Now, I'm not as big a Whoopi fan as the YBF, but I do appreciate what she's done in the industry, and her hosting something like four times is too important to not have been included. She's achieved crazy heights within her career, in both comedy and drama, as well as with her hosting duties, and it's a damn shame that she wasn't included. I'm riding for you, Whoopi.

The Wire, Season 5: "Clarifications" [recap]

After it happened, I had no idea what was being said for the next 5 minutes. It wasn't until later viewings that I noticed that McNulty & Kima went to the FBI to discuss the outline of the killer. I couldn't even process what the fuck just went down. And in that instant, The Wire both murked off one of the most compelling characters on TV, and further established that they aren't fucking around, and never have been. We assumed it'd be a gun fight, not Lil' "UP MY ASS, GUMP" Kenard holding the pistol that offed Mr. Omar Little. This is more fitting, though. I had various heads who, like me, saw this episode last Monday, and just rewatch Omar walking into the store to pick up his "newpotes". His limp was gone. Weird, right? Take it a step further - TV Squad hit the nail right on the head: Omar was getting cocky, trying to get Marlo out there. That's not him. He either moved in the cloak of the night or had a plan hatched to do his work. He was out, bum leg and all, waging a one man army against Stanfield? In the daylight? Kenard saw him all fucked up and didn't buy the hype - and offed dude. You have so many youngbucks these days who don't have respect for their elders, and this is a proper metaphor for that whole way of thinking in the hood. Do the knowledge...
I love how Jimmy McNulty is on some Robin Hood shit, now that Carcetti has given him unlimited OT, whips and carte blanche. Shit's getting out of hand, like dude who conned the trip out of Jimmy, but it is what it is. Carver half-knows, but I think that he is really just trying to appease his men, who were aggravated early-on due to lack of OT and other gripes. Kima, on the other hand - I could def. see her snitching. She was spending time researching, dealing with upset parents and the like, only to find it's all a hoax. And she was PISSED seeing Sydnor in there. WTF can you do though?

Speaking of Sydnor, I personally was kind of insulted that the whole picture message clock thing came down to using an atlas. Aren't there like hundreds of atalses in existence? Why am I failing to believe that Marlo is using the same exact atlas as the Baltimore City Po-Po uses? I mean, it works and is a very unique system, but come on. Marlo isn't that smart, and it's just a big coincidence. At least with the beeper messages, it made sense for their situation in the projects. This is just a bit eeh for me.

Shouts to seeing Poot again. I love how they are weaving some of my favorite characters from past seasons into this. Good to see him working... although this whole Dukie thing is depressing. Now this nigga is rollin' with the junkman!? Come on, man. If you aren't cut out for shit, take your smart smelly ass back to school. Why fuck with junkman? Riding on the cart like king of the swamp people - that's no life for a 15 year old. Why do I keep thinking Dukie is gonna end up a fiend?

The Scott Templeton shit is coming to a head, and I am glad Gus is seeing it. First the war vet takes Scott to task, bringing up that he didn't have to embellish, and while Gus was kind of skeptical, I like the way he handled it. Scott is the king of those sad faces - he wasn't feeling the whole "we gonna run a correction if it holds up" thing. Then, Gus cuts dude's lead, citing an "anonymous" source in the homelessness rally piece. Good for him. I hope Scott gets shut down for good.

What was good with Chris and Snoop being so pissed off all episode, Chris especially? I mean, I understand he didn't get Omar - but he looking like he did when he rocked Michael's daddy (more on that in a bit). I loved Snoop's "youngin' on some different opinion shit" comment, but Michael was legit. Why is Marlo putting up that front? He's looking really scared out in the street, regardless of Omar being shot. Omar still jacked how many of Marlo's stashes? Just doesn't seem right.

Big up to Beadie for leaving Jimmy for a day. I don't get why he broke down and told her about the hoax, but I guess he needed to get it off his chest and sort of connect with her - but with the way he's dogged her out, it had the adverse affect. When will she leave? She has all the ammo - what if McNulty gets arrested? She's now an accessory...

What was good with Lester trying to blackmail Clay at the end of this episode? What was he trying to gain/prove? I mean, Clay knows who he is fucking with - he just knows how to get out of it. Maybe Lester is trying to buy some damage control for something?

And I could give a fuck about Carcetti - all of his campaign promises end up dying as he eyes for his next seat, making deals with everyone he can to keep costs down/hidden. Fuck him.

OK, on to next week. Did you catch the previews for next week, AKA the 2nd to last episode? I think Chris is gonna get got. Just, everything was so focused on him, and then we see scenes of Michael in a whip with a gat talkin' that "you always told me to show up early" jazz that Chris spoke of earlier in the year. Plus, Bunk got that favor from Jimmy and flipped it into a postitve DNA match for Partlow in the murder of Michael's stepdaddy. A warrant has been brought out, and it looks like one way or the other - party done!

Also looks like Marlo is gonna feel the heat. With this "fresh line", I'd imagine they hit a stash or a big buy, and all hell is gonna break loose. It has to. We're at the end.

And what is HBO going to do next? OZ? Gone. The Sopranos? Gone. I can't watch Big Love or In Treatment or any of the other drama shows they make. Just not me. How is the void going to be filled? Enlighten me...

BHM2K8: Obama Lost

And Ralph Nader is the man who will pull the trigger. He's just thrown his hat into the 2008 race, and with Obama's momentum over the last few months, I feel that if he does get the DNC backing, it will still be for nothing. It will be a "look, a nigga could be a legit candidate", but ultimately will lose - not because he couldn't handle John McCain, but because Ralph fucking Nader murked so many Obama fans, and made them join his party.

Our country is not a three-party country, and I don't see many Republicans who follow McCain all of the sudden backing Nader - but many Democrats and Independents are quicker to follow someone like Nader. Just ask Al Gore.

The more I think about it, the more I think Nader is getting Republican Party dollars to cast doubt and votes from Obama. I really do. Conspiracy theories be damned.

I first heard of this flick damn near two years ago... and I am wondering: WHERE IS IT!? Being a fan of Pharcyde, Hip-Hop production, escaping drug abuse and documentaries, this shit is right up my alley. I fear that this story will not get told if it sits around too long. I went to the 1 more hit website and e-mailed them, asking where the movie is at... hopefully I'll get an answer.
