5 Releases You Need to Buy On Record Store Day 2017

Saturday, April 22, 2017 marks the 10th annual Record Store Day, which is celebrated by hitting your local independent record store and actually buying music. It's a novel idea, but if we want these mom & pop spots to stay in business, we need to frequent their businesses, you smell me?

As I did with the Black Friday Record Store Day 2016 releases, we wanted to help you diggers out there with a quick look at some of the hip-hop-related releases out there. We have everything from a classic song being turned into a children's book to an iconic soundtrack getting a vinyl release. Check out our picks below, and for the full list, hit up the Record Store Day website.

Life After Death: Download These Tributes to The Notorious B.I.G.

While it's customary that we at rockthedub pay tribute to The Notorious B.I.G.'s legacy by sharing this now-nine-year-old mix that we did, today is a bit different; today marks the 20th anniversary of his death. It's a big one, and should be recognized properly.

That said, check out some of these tribute songs, mixtapes, and more to the memory of one of the greatest to ever do it. Rest in peace, Biggie.

Rich Quick Honors The Notorious B.I.G. on "Juicy Symphony"

Instead of some of the corny ass tributes that I've heard for Biggie, the homey Rich Quick speaks truth, transforming some of the most memorable lines from one of B.I.G.'s most memorable tracks for a track that pays perfect homage to the Notorious One while still exuding exactly what we love from Quick. Emily Wells on this is icing on the cake.

Rock out to this, then peep the throwback BIG mix that we did years ago. RIP BIG!

Mister Cee On Juan Epstein (Part 2)

If you missed Part 1, I'd say go back and listen to that before digging into this new episode. "Whoa hey! Mister Cee came back for part 2 and this one was SOMETHING ELSE! Cee chronicles Biggie’s entire career in a true retrospective. You are very welcome….."

Juan Epstein on Biggie (3/11/2015)

I believe this was recorded on March 9, and is a few days after the anniversary of Biggie's death, but it's so necessary: "If you want an official, perfectly organized, and professional Biggie retrospective — go somewhere else. If you want to hear great stories and factoids from Ciph, opinions and memories from me, and a great call from Lord Finesse — listen to this!!"

Pay Tribute to The Notorious B.I.G.: 2015 Edition

Eighteen years ago today, the greatest rapper of all time was removed from this Earth. While I normally just rock the that rock the dub radio episode I made in tribute to Biggie's memory, there have been a few new additions to the Biggie Smalls canon that I wanted to share.

The Combat Jack Show (6/20/2012)

It never stops. Another episode in the can, and this one featured a dope interview with Artie Lang, who you probably remember most from Howard Stern. He goes in on his own trials (and tribulations), his comeback and even drops a B.I.G. impression (which you can see after the jump). Crazy. #GetReadyForCombat

Mister Cee's Notorious B.I.G. Tribute Mix (3/09/2012)

I've been in a Biggie zone all day, as you can see by the posts that proceed this one. I had been waiting for Mister Cee's three-hour mix on Hot 97 earlier today, and I saw that Rap Radar (by way of Miss Info) has it all posted. Service. Shouts to RR by the way; they are celebrating three years strong in this. Shit. 15 years since Biggie got killed? Fuck. Reminisce on this one.

Terry Urban & Dope Couture Present Born Ready To Die

I've never listened to Lana Del Rey. I imagine a lot of you have. Terry Urban felt it made sense to flip some of her tracks and throw BIG vocals from Ready To Die on it. This is how it came out.
