FOTM: THUGSTEP #34

When Aleon Craft's Mothership Decatur dropped, I mentioned Nappy's "Donkey Kong" refix. I remember when I first heard it, I knew that this one needed to be stepped on. The original even had a slower vibe to it - the acapella fell into my lap randomly, and I'm glad Nappy saw it's potential. With that heavy funk from Benga, this ode to fatties cannot be denied. At. All.

Wiz has to be celebrating this week: not only does he have one of the flyest chicks on his arm, but his debut album, Rolling Papers, hit stores this week. rockthedub turned five years old yesterday, so we're throwing celebrations all weekend. And Nappy's on the way out very soon - sooner than you think. So it made sense to drop a previously-unreleased refix of Wiz and Philly phenom Starkey. Shit like this makes so much sense - just listen to how Starkey's beat fluctuates and matures, and how Wiz's shit matches it beat for beat. Just excellent. Head into Wrestlemania weekend with this one, trust we!

Gotta love how shit works. DJ Nappy has been getting acquainted with the sounds of now, and has been bitten by the Drumstep bug - I'm sorry. It's dope b/c with all of the acapellas out there, the Drumstep tempo lends itself well for his brand of refixin', so cats like Dub Foundation are right up the nigga's alley. Their recent EP, Mr. Blonde, features two versions of their "Time To Burn" tune - one in a Drumstep vibe, the other in a DnB crawl. Nappy being Nappy flipped the Drumstep version first:

Rich Boy - D Boyz (Disc Jockey Nappy vs. Dub Foundation Drumstep Mix) by djnappy

And guess what? I asked for him to throw the same vocal over the Rich Boy, and it works just as nice. Dancefloor destruction like that? Like that.

Stunna Mane ft. Project Pat & Benz vs. Muffler "Drunk Gorilla (Disc Jockey Nappy THUGSTEP Refix)": Mississippi stand up! If you've been following DJ Nappy and this THUGSTEP movement, you definitely heard this cut before; the homey zone3 featured this on The Freak Beat back in November of last year, but a funny thing happened while we were plotting our takeover - niggas started taking notice! Stunna Mane, especially, liked how the movement was rollin' and saw an opportunity... after one interesting phone convo, a pack of acapellas and some bangin' beats later, and we're two weeks away From Mississippi To Mars, the latest project from the HOODLUM conglomerate - full release February 18th, 2011. That's right, Nappy, DJ Cable and DJ Hipnotikk have ran these beats through the ringer and provide some excellent slices of THUGSTEP mayhem. Consider this your soundtrack to goin' intergalactically HAM! Cable's dropping the official mix for this project, and the release will be presented by Ego Thieves and Rock The Dub. If you guys are nice, I'll drop a few more cuts from this next week, in preparation, you smell me? Oh and the BONUS BEAT on this post will not be featured on this project - the mighty Hipnotikk crafted a banger refix in it's place, though!

You're officially not ready for what my crew has in store. Shouts to So Damn Pretty Entertainment, Stunna Liqueur, the homegirl Tonya and everyone else who's down for the cause. Artwork by the one and only Justin Rossi. Oh this is gonna smash niggas!

Here's a lil' promo video from Stunna Mane, talking about this project:

David Banner ft. Lil' Flip vs. Skream "Like A Pimp (DJ Nappy THUGSTEP Refix)": I was going to randomly leak some new new new neaux shit for the new new new year, but with Nappy in love with that new Banner/9th Wonder album, I had to dip back. And then I realized that this didn't get it's own proper post (unless I'm Jack Trippin'). This was one of my favorite flips. This blend took one of my favorite ignant anthems and paired it up with one of my early favorite jams from Skream's back catalog. Just undeniable flavor on this, and it fits too perfect... throw this one on and po' a lil' mo in ya cup, chief. Drank up and celebrate this new year!

Dizzee Rascal vs. Lazer Sword "Fix Up, Look Sharp (DJ Nappy THUGSTEP Refix)": I first want to apologize - while I've posted 'nuff DJ Nappy refix material in the interim, I've not posted a FOTM post since September 2009. Realistically, the hard drive that had EVERYTHING of his died, and I literally didn't get all of those jawns until a few weeks ago. What's funny is, this first refix isn't even from that older batch! This is a new(er) refix, flippin' what can be argued as Dizzee's largest crossover hit with a bangin' synth-party from Lazer Sword. While it's not an Old School breakbeat workout, or a charged-up Grime instrumental, this new school Electro bop fits perfect under Dizzee's boasts, don't you agree?

Now that the floodgates have been opened, expect these to come back up. Both new shit and old gems that need more press. We're far from done...

Omarion vs. Tes La Rok "Ice Box (DJ Nappy THUGSTEP Refix)": This is actually one of my favorite refixes Nappy ever did. That Tes La Rok track is just so smooth, it really captures the "so cold" feeling that Omarion speaks on. Just one of those instances where a blend sounds so effortless, so simple, but speaks volumes. And you thought this was just about Hip-Hop?

Two for one today; the month of July was nutzo for me. I went to LA at the end of June, and when I got back I just felt SWAMPED. I got ish done, but absentmindedly forgot to post the FOTM for July '09 a month ago, so its in here alongside this month's FOTM. Dirty beats...

Yung Joc vs. Juju "Going Down (DJ Nappy Extended THUGSTEP Refix)": "beat in my trunk, bought it just fo da freaks"; so goes Joc's intro into the game. This uptempo banger from Juju sounds tailor-made for Joc's party-ready anthem. Can you still do that motorcycle move?

Rich Boy vs. Benga "Throw Some D's (DJ Nappy Extended THUGSTEP Refix)": Rich Boy's entrance into the game came from this Cadillac-lovin' ode to the pursuit of twinkies. That bottom-heavy riddim from Benga should have the block rockin' when it pumps through your speakerbox, trust. Polow Da Don even comes off on this one!

B.o.B. & Wes Fif vs. Skream "Haterz Everywhere (DJ Nappy Extended THUGSTEP Refix)": We got some treats for you hatin' ass, bitin' ass, no respect showin' ass niggas out there. After this post on Tuesday night, I realized what I gotta do. You niggas gon' see, and we finna smack you in the face with it. Finna have you down for the count, forreal.

Until then, get more THUGSTEP firepower HERE. And show the creator some love.

PS Yes, I've definitely been dropping a THUGSTEP tune every month for the past 2 years. Ship stays afloat 'til we reform.

Bonus Beats Here's a new batch of THUGSTEP refixes from Shawn Livewire!

Trae ft. Yung Joc vs. T-Woc "In Da Hood (DJ Nappy THUGSTEP Refix)": I always thought that ATL Crunk shit worked the best over slick dubstep, but with Trae's syrupy "movin' so slow/bangin' mah Screw" on the hook, that's such a perfect way to put it. The electro bleeps and blips in this T-Woc banger help accent the flow that Trae and Joc execute. Light up a green monster and rock to this.

This THUGSTEP shit is far from over... Nappy got plenty in the stash!

Lil' Wayne vs. Benga "Go DJ (DJ Nappy THUGSTEP Refix)":Not much needs to be said about this one. "Go DJ" helped throw Weezy Wee into the mainstream light (although his wealth wasn't realized when this dropped), and that snare-happy bounce that Benga provides is the perfect alarm-call; you DJs who are looking to lick a fire underneath the crowd? Throw this one on, early!

Lil' Jon ft. Three 6 Mafia vs. Coki "Act A Fool (DJ Nappy THUGSTEP Refix)": For those who don't know, this refix right here is not only the perfect definition of THUGSTEP, but its also the first refix that Nappy did. As the story goes, Nappy honestly wasn't feeling Dubstep. I would send him tracks all the time, as well as acapellas, but it just wasn't his bag. I think I sent him the "Act A Fool" acapella a few weeks before I sent him Coki's "Shattered", which I was digging at the moment because I was 1) truly discovering Dubstep and 2) kind of drunk. Surprisingly, he heard something in this cut and made this amazing refix. This was featured in one of the THUGSTEP packs he sent out back in 2007, but I wanted to throw something up that was high energy, something I would want playing if I was coming out of the locker room about to play in the biggest football game of the year. Or what I'd like to drop as the first track while celebrating my win! Bang this one, loud, preferably after a few shots of that Patron...

Birdman & Lil' Wayne vs. Luke Envoy "Stuntin' Like My Daddy (DJ Nappy THUGSTEP Refix)": This particular refix is one of the best THUGSTEP jawns DJ Nappy did, and it's also one of the most hated by the "proper" Dubstep community; I believe Luke Envoy himself wasn't feeling this one. In my eyes, this is an anthem, for those who are trying to get those ends, trying to floss their wears, and just rock the dub with a styrofoam cup. Stunt on, fam.

Big Kuntry King ft. T.I. vs. Reform "Throwback (DJ Nappy Extended THUGSTEP Refix)": This was initially leaked on the THUGSTEP Extensions pack, but after the recent Dirty Awards fiasco, I had to flip something for the Grand Hustle fam. Are you slangin' Joe Montana? What about that Hershel Walker? If you on that grind, I think you should be. This Reform beat is bananas... I've seen heads get entranced by that bass. Dope vibes for a dope track.

DJ Nappy is on twitter, too. Keep up, slowpokes!

Black Moon vs. Skream "How Many MC's (DJ Nappy THUGSTEP Refix)":I forgot to drop this on Saturday, although last week I tried to remind myself to do it. In any case, I dedicate to a certain "Mc" out there that truly needs to get dissed, especially on today of all days. You think dubstep and that classic NY Hip-Hop don't work together? Skream's booms accentuate Buckshot's fierce darts on the real. Jeep heat for the streets. GO VOTE!

Cherish ft. Sean Paul vs. Slaughter Mob "Do It To It (DJ Nappy Extended THUGSTEP Refix)": Back like I left something, I hit you with this latest Nappy refix, and it's a fresh one. The original was a minor hit, and this foursome has put out their 2nd album already, but the flip with Slaughter Mob's "Guts 'N' Bones"?!?! It just fits perfectly. The bass has that perfect bounce to it, and the drums are steppy, but hit you hard enough. Sad thing is, I love this refix the most when the drums aren't there, and they are singing that infectious hook over that groove. So so sick.

Young Jeezy ft. Bonecrusher vs. Tes La Rok "Take It To The Floor (DJ Nappy Extended THUGSTEP Refix)": Simple, yet effective. Fresh THUGSTEP that fans of the initial .rar's already heard. Jeezy and Bonecrusher rep the dirty, tough talkin' over an moody dubstep romp from the one like Tes La Rok. Oddly enough, I dropped another track featuring Jeezy last month, but with The Recession on the horizon, I can't help it. PUNK NIGGA C'MON!!!

Boo ft. Young Jeezy & Blu Davinchi vs. TRG "Dat Rap Shit (DJ Nappy Extended THUGSTEP Refix)": Oh yes, this is a true fucking anthem. I put Jeezy's pic up because, well, this track is all about his signature ad-libs, and that boastful hook (I dare you to get that "MISS ME WIT DAT RAP SHEEEEEEEEIT" out of your head after playing this). The kicker is towards the end, where TRG's dubstep rumble drops into a 4x4 kick, alongside that hook? On The Night THUGSTEP Came Alive, this had all of the party rockin', so DJs, test this one on your hungry masses.

Black Rob Vs. Virgo "Whoa (DJ Nappy Rough THUGSTEP Refix)" [mirror]: Y'all remember "Whoa" right? Probably one of the hypest cuts ever committed to wax. So it only makes sense that Nappy threw some equally intense, pulsating Grime right underneath it and bring it to that next level. Those booming horns in the intro kill me, everytime. Fits so well.

Oh, and major props goes out to Nick Evelation; he's set up hosting for some projects he's working on, and is allowing these refixes to be hosted with direct linkage! In the coming weeks, I'll be sorting out everything that's leaked, THUGSTEP-wise, and will be uploading it. More news on that when it goes down.

As per usual, any DJs looking for THUGSTEP, hit me up: khaldub@gmail.com.
