DJ Sega Continues His 'Vision' With Explosive New Mixtape

Been a bit since I've taken in a new mixtape from Philly's unsung hero DJ Sega. He's back with a new mix, Vision, for the 2-0-2-0, and it's just as frantic and inspiring as his previous work. One of the beacons of the Philly club scene (and the club scene worldwide, truth be told), Sega's whipped up this 20-track selection of original bangers and remixes, giving his latest statement as an artist in this insane world. "Hindsight, foresight, and the unseen" is what he has listed in the description of this one; press play and dive deeper into the current mindstate of the mighty Sega.

Tracklist:

1.) Evacuation (The Chase)
2.) Let’s Go God!
3.) Rose In Harlem
4.) Breathe And Stop 2020
5.) Icon
6.) Crack
7.) Boogie Wonderland
8.) Super Bad Brother Sega
9.) This Is America
10.) Don’t Get Comfortable
11.) Wu-Tang 2020
12.) New Jack City Theme
13.) Mellosmoothe
14.) Boots
15.) Wanna Get Wit U
16.) Love
17.) Don’t Walk Away Dub

PREMIERE: Zilla Rocca ft. Curly Castro "Name On The Buckle"

This sounds like heaven. On November 9, the Philly-based rockthedub-fav Zilla Rocca will be dropping his first completely-solo album in eight(!) years, Future Former Rapper, via POW Recordings (shouts to the squad). Because of how long we've rocked with Rocca and company, and what we've done over here for what feels like eons, we've been given the go to premiere the Starkey-produced(!), Curly Castro-featured cut from the LP, "Name On The Buckle." And it's murdaaaaaaah (word to Ja).

This Philly trifecta really lean into the "street bass" tag that Starkey and the Seclusiasis crew have been championing for years with this heavyweight, anthemic electronic beaut of a tune. Zilla and Curly are two emcees who've always understood how to slide into the pocket of these dense grooves, retaining lyrical potency while lounging in the pocket with a few fingers of fine brown liquor. Starkey does what Starkey does: channel integalactic excellence into bassbin-rumbling numbers, washing hypnotic synths atop like its nothing. It's insane to think that this is their first collab since Curly and Zilla linked up for their "Holodeck" remix years back.

You can stream the full track below, and on Spotify, and be sure to grab Future Former Rapper (which features production from Small Professor, Messiah Musik, and more) when it hits on November 9.

The Rich Quick Memorial Show (Oct. 12, 2018)

The NJ scene is still reeling from the passing of Rich Quick, but one of the best ways to heal is to link up with your community and celebrate. That will be happening at the Voltage Lounge in Philly on Friday, October 12.

The bill features the likes of Reef the Lost Cauze, the CORFU crew, Skrewtape, and even Rich's student, HeemFuquan. There will also be a cypher with featured MCs like MiilkBone, Ren Thomas, and more. Even the homey Leon Rainbow will be doing some live painting.

Tickets are available now; $10 pre-sale, $15 at the door. There's also an Art History 101 exclusive Rich Quick shirt on sale only at the event, as well as raffles and a silent auction, with 100% of the proceeds going to the Rich Quick Scholarship Fund.

Rest in power, Rich.

RIP Rich Quick

The rap game just lost a real one. While details are scarce, social media has lit up with word that Rich Quick, one of the nicest and most memorable artists in this area, has died. If you've been rocking with this site, you've definitely come across a post we've done on his music.

I want to say I first got introduced to Quick back in 2011, during one of the many Garden Variety shows in Trenton. I'd continue to run into him in Trenton, and we struck up a rapport. It was his I'm With the DJ tape that really made me appreciate what Quick did as a lyricist for the area, but it went deeper than that project. He just felt like he was always on the pulse. He was one of the first I remember migrating to SoundCloud. One of the few taking the time to craft songs with live instrumentation, even after cats started making beats at home. He just thought different. Might be why, over the last few years, he was doing way more painting and way less writing.

I guess we won't be able to hear what Quick's pen would sound like after this hiatus. I'd love to know what his next chapter would've included. All I have are these tracks, all of those daps and laughs, his warm greeting whenever we ran into each other in the Town. I'm genuinely going to miss this dude, just like anyone who entered his cipher during his way too short time on this Earth. So while we all try to pick up the pieces, lets loudly blast the music Quick left us. Rest in power, Rich.

A GoFundMe to help out Rich's family is here; you can also read his obituary.

Small Professor Gets Freaky With 'Nasty Jawns IV'

Quiet as kept, Small Professor's getting the love in 2017 that I figured he should've been getting years back. Not only does he have a single with the late and legendary Sean Price under his belt, but, alongside Zilla Rocca, he's 1/2 of Career Crooks, who put out one masterpiece of an album, Good Luck With That. Delving deeper into his mental, Small Pro drops Nasty Jawns IV, a collection of NSFW-sounding instrumentals that blend the boom bap with the ass clap.

It's interesting; I remember growing up as a kid and listening to Prince or other R&B acts using actual sexual moans and sounds in the music and feeling mad dirty. Something about the carnal act being so private that committing it to wax felt like the ultimate sin. I'm a grown ass man, and now I just laugh at syrupy-slick Small Pro beats incorporating all kinds of sounds that reside for $free.99 over on XNXX.

Get your grown up on via Bandcamp.

Tierra Whack's "MUMBO JUMBO" Is Far From Her Surname

You have to love when dope music smacks you upside your head out of nowhere. I promise you I'd never heard of Philly's own Tierra Whack since earlier today, when everyone and their mother was sharing the video for her new single "MUMBO JUMBO," but I'm glad I clicked on it.

Homegirl can obviously spit, but her new single finds her flipping the script, sending up the "mumble rap" scene on its ear. The video, which is eerie as fuck, finds Tierra in a dentist's chair, getting work done on her teeth. I feel like she laughed at the thought of mumble rappers sounding like they were in the dentist's office trying to talk and took it to the next level. It's an intriguing clip that makes me love the song even more.

Check out the video below, and cop the single. You need it.

RTDMIX001: Dev79

We've been fans of Dev79's for a bit. I feel like we first spoke via MySpace, when Dev was looking to place a refix of Nappy's on a project he was putting together. Due to our shared interests (aka insane electronic beats with a hip-hop flavor), we've been in close contact, and while I've never actually met Dev IRL, he's always been a homey.

Dev's not only one of the heads behind critically-acclaimed imprints like Seclusiasis and Slit Jockey, but himself is a talented producer and DJ. There's something about his tracks like "Smoked Salt" that always seem to hit me at first...but upon repeat listens, really develop into tunes that hit me hard and keep my finger on the rewind button. Proper "high replay value" types of cuts.

It's been about three years since I secured an exclusive mix from Dev, and in this 33+ minute throwdown, he goes through an intoxicating array of Street Bass bangers. Not only do a few of his own slick productions make the mix, but he also drops heat from Sh?m, DJ Cable, the don Starkey, Conrank, El Carnicero, and many more. If you like your electronic beats with a tinge of hip-hop swagger, this is the mix you need.

You can stream this mix below, and if you're so inclined, subscribe to the podcast. This is only the beginning.

Rich Quick Announces Debut Album, 'The Everywhere Man'

If you've been rocking with the dub, you should know about Rich Quick. Dude's been on his grizzly for years, setting the Tri-State on fire, and word is that he embarked on his "Buy Me A Beer" tour of the UK this week that'll run through Swindon, London, Redditch, and other cities before it's done.

Quick also announced that his debut album, The Everywhere Man, is set to drop via Soulspazm on September 28th, and features a host of collaborators: featured MCs include Reef the Lost Cauze, Skrewtape, Miilkbone, Jakk Frost, Ryshon Jones, and many others, along with beats from Divine Drummah, J57, STANKFOOT, The Wurxs, and Snowgoons, who produced the title track, which is the lead single you can hear below.

I'm hoping he's back stateside so I can dap him up at Jersey Fresh, and I also hope we get to catch a couple of glimpses from what should be a fire album before the month's out. Pre-order The Everywhere Man today via iTunes!

Jay Griffy - "25th Hour"

There's a lot going on here, and I can't front: this is the most impressed I've been with Jay Griffy. Love the risks he took in the video, and the bigger feel of the track overall.

RIP Prolyfik

Damn, this is nuts. While I can't find details on his passing (I've reached out to a few heads regarding this situation), I'm getting word that South Philly's Prolyfik, of the mighty Mortal Shellz, passed away earlier this week. Pro isn't someone I can say I knew, but I definitely knew of him. As I started attending the Garden Variety shows in Trenton, as well as the Jersey Fresh Jams, his was a friendly face that was always around... and always down to rip a mic, especially when his brother Esoge was with him.

UPDATE 7/03/15 6:17PM: While unconfirmed, word is that Prolyfik (real name Jason Nigro) was involved in a car accident on Route 55 in South Jersey. There was an accident on June 30th that took the life of one man after a car collided with a tractor-trailer. An obituary for Jason Nigro hit the papers today, saying that he passed away on June 30th as well—for those wondering, there will be a memorial celebration for Prolyfik at the Vincent Gangemi Funeral Home in Philadelphia this coming Tuesday night. Prolyfik is survived by his parents, two brothers, a fiance, and many other relatives. He was 33-years-old at the time of his passing.

UPDATE 7/03/15 8:03PM: Friends of Prolyfik are confirming that it was in fact the accident on Route 55 on June 30th that took Prolyfik's life.

Our condolences go out to Prolyfik's family, friend, and crew. As I get more details, I'll update this post. Word is this Sunday's edition of Side-B Radio will be dedicated to Prolyfik. For now, dig into some of his old bangers.

Curly Castro ft. Has-Lo, Dewey Decibel, Davd Little, PremRock, & Zilla Rocca - "Rammellzeed"

Curly, Has, and Zilla are a Philly trifecta I've not heard from in a little bit, so it's dope to hear them alongside a number of capable MCs over some fire funk from Fakts One, taken from Restroy & Debuild, which is set to drop on April 21. Proper "get ready for the weekend" ish.
