Everything You Wanted to Know About Why Spec Boogie is No Longer Spec Boogie

One of my favorite Lessondary members, Spec Boogie, is Spec Boogie no more. He's now going by his given name, Rob Cave Jr, and on the latest episode of Bad With Names, he goes through his history, breaking down why he's changed his name.

Tanya Morgan ft. Jermiside & Spec Boogie "Borrow That (Boogie's Revenge Mix)"

For those of you who slept on You & What Army last November, the good folks at HiPNOTT picked up the rights to drop a physical CD version of the latest Tanya Morgan project, and word from 2DBz is that Von Pea produced three remixes that will serve as bonus cuts on the disc. This is one, and features Spec Boogie hopping on one of my favorite cuts from that project. Pea brings the understated slap on this one, trust.

Spec Boogie "Pantheon"

Spec Boogie "Pantheon": Tough drum on this one. Had no idea the Lessondary traveller was sorting out his World Tourist project for 2DBz in August. Meka dropped this earlier, and I'm all about it. Spec's travels seem to have only sharpened his darts, as he seems to weave his BK aesthetic with all of the outernational sights he's taken in. Sounds like he's maturing as well. Loving this one.

Jermiside Live And Let Live

Earlier this week, KevinNottingham.com released Lessondary affiliate Jermiside’s latest mixtape. Love that Jerm produced the majority of this project (with beats from Von Pea and Mike Jaye thrown in for good measure). Ohio has some heat, and Jermiside goes ham on everything he touches down upon. “The Cookout” (with Donwill and Spec Boogie) should be your anthem for this Fourth of July BBQ season, but stick around for the introspective, shit-talking, edutaining tracks. Something for the whip and your headphones, fam. Don’t sleep on this one!

Spec Boogie "Afrikingstyle"

Spec Boogie "Afrikingstyle": The other day, Spec made a comment about the Loosie Champion Hoods mixtape, which dropped almost five years ago! Crazy to see how long I’ve been rocking to the Lessondary crew, and now Spec is international. And he’s got lines for days – the one that struck me on "Afrikingstyle" is him saying he doesn’t fuck girls who don’t read books (because you can’t get brains from a dumbass, obviously). Dude is BKLYN born and bred, but his craft has him worldwide. Take that journey with him – you’ll be glad you took the trip!

Jermiside ft. Donwill & Spec Boogie "The Cookout"

Jermiside ft. Donwill & Spec Boogie "The Cookout" (prod. by Von Pea): Real fucking Lessondary party on this one! Let me just say, that beat that Von Pilsner cooked on this one? Straight off the grill. Feels like some shit your parents would get hype to during a Labor Day cookout. When Lessondary gets together on tracks like this, it's nothing but quality Hip-Hop, and with that BBQ beat and these meaty rhymes? Wild gems. Fucking radical, nigga. You need this.

This is taken from Live & Let Live, the follow-up to Die Jerm Die.

Spec Boogie ft. Ash-Lee "Intercontinentalist"

Spec Boogie ft. Ash-Lee "Intercontinentalist" (prod. by The Prince of Beatz): Who better than Lessondary traveling man Boogie to drop a gem about, well, his travels. Dude’s BKLYN born but living the life all over, and homey breaks down his time zone-neglecting hustle over this Soulful beat. I remember him being one of the first artists I started to pick up on when really working on RTD, and to see Spec and the entire Lessondary crew’s growth is great. Be on the lookout for Boogie's World Tourist mixtape, which is due to land this Spring.

[preview] Spec Boogie Introspective

What can I say. Years back, Spec Boogie hit me up when RTD still had a "blogspot.com" on it's ass, I found an MC that helped me understand not only the importance of the Internet in Hip-Hop's next phase, but also got introduced to a true BK spitter and his crew, the Lessondary. Now I know some cats from the clique more than others, but Spec's always been there, doing his thing, and getting a grip of shine. Seems like its been forever and a few days since I first heard about Introspective, and the first time I head "Bed Stuy", I was in awe. Yeah, it sampled one of my favorite movies, but it's not often you catch a tribute to one's city that sounds truly from the heart, and not from the mind trying to capitalize on city pride. Spec's a different animal, and while I piece together pieces of his life through the pieces he places in his lyrics, I feel like I know him. Could grab a beer and chat like old friends.

This week, Boog released Introspective, and it's the truth. It features the aforementioned "Bed Stuy", as well as "Show Up Drunk" with his Lessondary compadres, and features from Tanya Morgan and Peter Hadar. It's a testament to his skillset, and is only 40 minutes. All killer, no filler. Hit the jump to preview the entire project, and read the official press release, then go put down $10 on this.

Che Grand with The Lessondary "Star (Pimps In Canada In 3D)"

Che Grand with The Lessondary "Star (Pimps In Canada In 3D)": We previewed a few tracks last week, but now Che links up with Von, Don and Spec on this final leak from The Fixtape Two, which is set to drop tomorrow. I don't like that this blast didn't say what they were spitting over - I'm not smart enough to know if this is an original beat or what. I don't know, but I love it. Got some good red wine in me (word to Andrew J Martin), and this is speaking to me.

Nevermind. Watch for this tomorrow.

Che Grand "Man Myth Legend"

Che Grand "Man Myth Legend": Shouts to DJ Low Key for sending over a few cuts from his forthcoming mixtape with Che Grizzly, Fixtape 2: In It For The Drink Ticket, which drops next week and features cats like Von Pea, Donwill, Spec Boogie, Elucid and Uzoy, among others. Che spazzed on this Samiyam beat, sounds like futuristic excellence. It's like three years since the first Fixtape, and it sounds like this is an accurate representation of where Che's at in 2010... or beyond?
