Theo Martins and Thelonious Martin Align For "Bad Tendencies"

I love seeing cats like Theo Martins still outchea doing their thing; he's someone that we've covered a lot over the years, and it sounds like he's still impressive. His latest is "Bad Tendencies," the first single from Why I Left, a collaborative project he has with the mighty Thelonious Martin. Something about the way these two link up and craft magic.

On the track, Theo breaks down what it's like leaving home and expanding to see bigger things. He wants to make sure of one thing, though: "I love Rhode Island, that can be misread so I’d like to avoid that by comparing it to the West Coast. It’s a relatable scenario for anyone looking to explore outside of their comfort zone." Any of you away-from-home ass college kids know the score. This might be your anthem.

Theo Martins "For Helena"

Here's some of that other other from Theo Martins. He always has found it easy to incorporate his influences in his music, and "For Helena" finds homey flipping some indie Pop shit into some other other. I'm not sure if the girl is the game, and he's crafting a metaphor for him being right on the cusp of getting "put on", or if he's just trying to get that chick to open the door so he can play hide the salami. Or is it pound the pastrami? In any case, it's a captivating piece of music done in a quickshot. Probably the audio equivalent to good cocaine. Or am I totally off. Word is T Mart has a fucking cassette on the way? This nigga.

Theo Martins "Puffy Time"

Theo Martins "Puffy Time": Since it’s his birthday and all, I figured I’d post this new track from Theo, which finds him flipping one of my favorite Flux Pavilion tracks, “I Can’t Stop”, showcasing his proper love for dubstep. I won’t go off on a THUGSTEP tangent, but you know how we do around here. No fucking brainer. Neph is gonna be in Asia touring very soon, and will be dropping the video for “Take You There” in no time. He can’t stop.

Marc Antoni ft. Laws & Theo Martins "Attempts"

Marc Antoni ft. Laws & Theo Martins "Attempts" (prod. by The TrackSlayerz): Antoni used to be known as Fly-C, and has a new EP dropping entitled Overnight, which will be hosted by DJ Booth, and features (aside from the two nigras on this track) Smoke DZA and Jon Hope, with beats from DJ Pain 1 as well. Love the pianos on this one – you can feel where it allows the pens of these MCs to truly open up and let you know what the fuck is on their mind – whether you’re gonna like it or loathe it. It’s all about constant progression.

Theo Martins "The Spotlight"

Theo Martins "The Spotlight": When he’s not wowing a new set of tastemakers, or starting up book clubs, Theo Martins is here noodling over electronic ecstasy, then letting it go for free. On the first leak since the well-received Sincerely Yours, The Dance Floor, this track sounds like a reflection on a really exquisite night, full of mountains of blow and fishnet dreamcatchers. Beverly Hills nightlife (it feels like, anyways). Some shit Theo needs to remake with someone like Lady Gaga. Homey is that agile, he’d be able to make it work – then keep it pushing. Homey got some good post-SXSW accolades via URB recently, and is embarking on spot dates in Boston and NYC in April. Go shake his hand and offer him a line, clown.

Theo Martins Sincerely Yours, The Dancefloor

And here's the long-awaited, club-fueled coke romp from the one like Theo Martins. I guess you might want to thank his skills as a DJ for the eclectic taste he has for picking beats, either on this project or on his other bits. He goes from skraight '80s sheen to Electro, with a bit of dubstep and other tempos tossed up. I sometimes wish more cats would truly express themselves, if they fucked with these kinds of tracks, at least. If you're a fan of Theo, you already know what to expect. If you're a DJ and looking for some spice in your sets, fox with this. Or just cop an 8-Ball and throw this on repeat. All night. Big up DJ Booth.

Theo Martins ft. STRFKR "Final Fantasy"

Theo Martins ft. STRFKR "Final Fantasy": Theo is a mthrfckng trip. Linking up with Portland indie band Starf*cker, this nigga feels like he went to Europe and got enamored by the soundtrack to their show Skins (quick aside: I watch the US version of Skins and applaud the balls of some of the stories, even if execution isn’t always pitch perfect). Theo takes us through his dreamtasy as an artist getting noticed, and the path he’s travel/journey he’s been dragged on. Feels like a music montage, with a lot of running through alleyways and jumping on stages, then ending with him at home, pad and pen, sleep on the couch. Did I just write the fckng treatment for the video, Theo?

Theo Martins "The Passover"

Theo Martins "The Passover" (prod. by Bink!): Super secret-face Theo Martins only said that this is a new jawn that will be featured on “a freestyle project I will be releasing later this quarter”, like he’s some suit-and-tie record exec. No title, no Nathan. In any case, this bangs. Kind of feels like it samples from the same bed that Sincerely Yours, The Dance Floor borrows from, but instead of some shit to get bucky nekkie and sloppy to, the drums go ham. Love kick-heavy beats, especially with all the percussion in it. Not sure if it’s a found beat or something exclusive to Theo Marty Mar, but this combo bangs regardless.

Theo Martins "Just Can’t Get Enough"

Theo Martins "Just Can’t Get Enough": When this came on, I immediately thought about the cruise I took with Wifey in January. No, not the sucky part where were 25 hours late meeting the ship. On the last night of the trip, the “Broadway-style” show in the theater was a salute to the ‘80s, and the shit Theo flipped on this one? Super ‘80s meltdown, and I’m not even a fan of Depeche Mode. This is the first single to Theo’s Sincerely Yours, The Dance Floor, which sounds like it’s going to be the soundtrack to the Spring of 2011, so gobble up these jams early and pray you have enough loot for booze when that cold is ghost.

Theo Martins "Lo-Fi Love"

Theo Martins "Lo-Fi Love" (prod. by $port): The boy Theo Mar reflects upon a recent trip to South Africa. I've been posting his music for three years now, and the progression in both sound and soul is a truly awesome thing to have charted. Not as awesome as a trip to the Motherland, but it's the proof of his worth that he can take such a heartwarming trip to Africa an let it shine through so many things in his life. His forthcoming Sincerely Yours, The Dance Floor project is on the horizon, but cool out to this one until then.

Theo Martins "20,000 Leagues Under The Sea (The Feather)"

The year is 1931. Persistent rumors of a tentacled sea monster attacking ships in the Pacific Ocean have created fear amongst sailors, disrupting the shipping lanes and slowing trade. Captain Theo Martins and his assistant board their vessel and make their way to the deep blue sea to find out what is really going on.

After months scouring the vast ocean, the monster strikes, ramming the naval frigate. The ship’s hull is destroyed and Captain Theo is thrown overboard. He drifts in the ocean, eventually finding a strange-looking metal vessel, and realizes the "monster" is a man-made "submerging boat,” that has been deserted.

Blown far off course, Theo enters uncharted territory. In this new land there’s a great cave, and inside it lies “The Feather,” a treasure guarded by a great nest of giant squid for the last two centuries. If used improperly “The Feather” could harm millions.

As he nears the cave, a squid attacks, and he’s caught in its tentacles. Ned, having escaped from captivity in the struggle, jumps to Theo's rescue and saves his captor's life. Theo takes hold of “The Feather” and intends to share his gem of the sea with the world.

Fresh Daily ft. Theo Martins "Pastelz"

Fresh Daily ft. Theo Martins "Pastelz" (prod. by Muneshine): With the Northeast on some summer swelter shit, it's good to hear some music you can drop while enjoying the heat in a park with your peoples. This is the soundtrack to a cookout with cats who can kick knowledge about the latest Rap beef as well as the best in film noir. Love those samples in the beat, too. These two might need to do an EP or something. Perfect compliments.
