Where to begin with Mr Herbie Hancock? A true icon of modern music and one of the most influential artists in the world of jazz as well as R&B. Herbie was discovered in 1960 by trumpeter Donald Byrd and soon signed with Blue Note as a solo artist. In 1963, Herbie joined Miles Davis’ “second great quintet” and made appearances on Davis’ groundbreaking ‘In A Silent Way’ and ‘Bitches Brew’ albums, heralding the birth of jazz-fusion. Herbie’s own solo career blossomed on Blue Note, with classic albums including ‘Maiden Voyage’, ‘Empyrean Isles’, and ‘Speak Like a Child’. After leaving Davis, Herbie put together a new band called The Headhunters and, in 1973, recorded the infamous ‘Head Hunters’ album. With its crossover hit single “Chameleon”, it became the first jazz album to go platinum. Herbie continued to push the boundaries of jazz forward throughout the 1970s with experimental electronic releases such as ‘Crossings’, ‘Sextant’ and ‘Man-Child’. With his ‘Future Shock’ album in 1983 Herbie even crossed over into the underground electro funk scene with the huge breakdancing smash “Rockit”. With the grammy award-winning ‘River: The Joni Letters’ album in 2007, a tribute to his longtime associate and friend Joni Mitchell, as well as collaborations with Kanye West, K’Naan and Anoushka Shankar, Herbie Hancock remains where he has always been: in the forefront of world culture, technology, and music.
