Oddisee Talks Artists-As-Brands on "Getting Over"

Shouts to Marcus K. Dowling, a writer that Nappy put me onto that did a lot of work for DoAndroidsDance. He's started a new podcast, Getting Over, that celebrates "those talented people who have found truly unique ways to achieve their successes." For the first episode, he brought on the homey Oddisee to talk the idea of an "artist-as-brand," and more.

Washington DC area-born and Brooklyn-based emcee Oddisee has established a standard of excellence as an artist that is largely defined by his level of global awareness and digital age savvy. By cultivating a loyal following around the world, he’s been able to thrive as an independent artist during an era when the record industry’s restructuring economics have dimmed the careers of other creatives.

For this inaugural episode of Getting Over, he and I spoke about how a rapper evolves into an artist-as-brand, and how that allows for skilled craftsmanship to become sustainable entrepreneurship.

Oddisee Kicks Off 2016 With a Free EP, 'Alwasta'

Oddisee is "the plug": "Sudanese-American hiphop artist Oddisee's new EP, “AlWasta,” takes its title from the Arabic colloquial term used to mean (to use colloquial English) “the plug.” The term “wasta” comes from the Arabic word “wasat,” meaning “middle” or “middleman,” and describes a member of the community who acts as a connector using their wealth of social currency. Understanding the value of social currency & how to use it (for better or worse) is what Amir Elkhalifa aka Oddisee focused on as the primary inspiration for his writings."

I respect it. Stream below, and download for free via Bandcamp.

Jakarta Records to Release "Winter in Jakarta" Compilation

If you know me, you know I love that gray area between hip-hop and electronic music; it's one of the reasons why Ta-ku is one of my favorite producers. The imprint that got me hooked on him, Jakarta Records, understands this area and is set to drop Winter in Jakarta on February 9, featuring all kinds of intriguing beats from similarly-minded producers. Today they teased three lush cuts for you #blizzardof2015 folks, including material from names like Stwo and Oddisee. You can preview them below, and head back on the 9th for the free download.

Diamond District ft. Fat Trel "Tol' U So"

Yeah, I know this is technically an Uptown XO jawn, but both yU and Oddisee are featured (as is Fat Trel), so you know. In any case, I'm fucking with this one. I have a thing for vintage-sounding string samples, and this one has a tough one, making almost anything these cats say sound ill. Good thing they don't waste a bar, you feel me? XO's Monumental 2 drops on August the 30th, digitally (not sure if that's free or for a fee). Whatever the case may be, get ready for that one.

Has-Lo "Everything Is (Oddisee Remix)"

Has-Lo "Everything Is (Oddisee Remix)": In Drum & Bass, the idea of shit being minimal swept over the scene about two years ago (or so), and if I were to apply that method of making beats, I’d throw this Oddisee of Has-Lo’s “Everything Is” right in that realm. There’s not a LOT going on here – you’ve got ripples of melodies, some percussive banging and a muted breakbeat thrown against Has’ subdued flow, sounding like its stream of conscious shit, but he’s got a LOT going on in these bars. Everything truly is everything, and if I have to sit here and explain that to you right now, you might need to check your age and act accordingly. Love grown man Hip-Hop. Go grab that In Case I Don’t Make It right now.

Apollo Brown ft. Oddisee "The Times"

Apollo Brown ft. Oddisee "The Times": Following in fellow MMG member Has-Lo’s footsteps, Oddisee flips one of Apollo Brown’s Clouds’ into a commentary on the changes going on in Sudan / Northern Africa (Oddisee is half-Sudanese). You might not know much about what’s going on over there, so use this cut as a proper introduction, and get your politics up, fam. And on the release-tip, Odd’s Odd Seasons deluxe edition is due out May 17th on CD/vinyl/digital download.
