Maria Isa "Secured"

Something dope from the girl Maria Isa, who is dropping her Sip It Vol. 1 mixtape. I was thrown off by way this track started out, but got into the tale she weaved. Felt like something a scorned female from Maury might pen. It's hard feeling that sense of security, and having the rug pulled out from under you. Makes it that much harder to give in to the next one who might be "the one". Shit helps you grow, but growing can fucking suck sometimes. Shouts to Jon Jon for sending this one over.

Maria Isa "Esto Suena"

Maria Isa "Esto Suena" (prod. by MRompe Boca): Loving Maria’s shit, and this one is another banger. Love how it marries some Spanglish in her lyrics, as well as the ill mixture of Hip-Hop with the Latin-flavored percussive flavor in there. Isa’s a dope MC, and knows how to use her voice (and bi-lingualism) to her advantage, although not sounding gimmicky or anything. Even throws in some political darts at Bachmann. Winning. It’s funny, because she actually graduated with Bachmann’s son, and had dealings with him, showing him how she lived and whatnot. Word is Maria and Muja Messiah have their La Villa Rosa project due out at the end of the summer, and she’s also working on the indie film Strike One, based in East LA, which stars the homey Danny Trejo. Esto suena bien, mami.

Maria Isa Raw & Uncut: Plenazo con Isa

Over the weekend, I got a trio of tracks from the one like Maria Isa, who I fox with. I don’t think I have heard too many Latinas kickin’ lyrics, and it sounds like this trio of tracks, produced by PLENA, find Isa in the pocket, forreal. What’s even iller is these three jawns were flipped during one weekend recently, using notes that were penned on the subway, creating some proper end to end burners. “Basilando” pairs up a live-sounding break with Isa’s cornucopia of thoughts, from Bill Clinton to Pac & Big. Just some real NY shit, taking in all of the stories, tweets, newsfeeds and blogs and siphoning them atop some some found noise and a fresh beat. “Are You Ready?” spices things up a bit, with a nice, understated sub atop a club thump, with Isa on the hunt for Richard Gere. One of those tracks you kind of wish that shorty you were eyeing would mouth to you from across the club. Pure strobelightsex. Rounding this out is Isa skraight freestyling over some quick drums. In English and Spanish. And #winning. She’s packing in a grip of appearances and output for the masses – the question is if you’re listening. Are you?

Maria Isa "Santa Papi"

HAH! I had a feeling this would be a sly reworking of Eartha Kitt’s classic, but when Maria asked for a spliff, I died. I love reworkings of those classic Holiday gems, especially when they are talented and shine light on shit you never heard during the white washing of Christmas. Just saying. I haven’t featured this sassy siren for a year plus, so it’s a great gift to get something so fly for the Holidays. Feliz Navidad, mama.

[trailer] WRLD

Dope project from M.anifest: "In a few weeks I'll be headed back home to Ghana for a month to create music with my 89 year old ethnomusicologist grandfather, Prof J.H. Nketia. I've made many thrilling discoveries about him and striking similarities of his work with what I do Hip-Hop wise, including some poetry he wrote in the 40's which when he recites sounds like rap! I kid you not. In the last few years a filmmaker, Justin Schell, has been documenting my musical progress and this connection between my grandpa and me as part of a bigger documentary featuring myself, Maria Isa and Tou Saik Lee.
Here is an awesome video trailer of the Ghana section of the documentary "We Rock Long Distance" (WRLD)":

If you fuck with this, support it by hitting up the Kickstarter page for WRLD.

Muja Messiah "Gary Coleman"

Muja Messiah "Gary Coleman" (prod. by Benzilla): Nice to hear some new material is on the way from Muja. His new album, M-16's, is due out on September 14th, both digitally and physically. Sounds like his style is progressing, building on the last bit of steam and consuming the game with his firey bars. Features on M-16's include M.anifest, P.O.S., Maria Isa and many more. Be on the lookout!
