INRE Danny!, "Hey You"
A post with a bunch of I's in three, two...
I don't like going into stories one-sided. I went on one yesterday because I felt wronged. And I'm still confused about the whole Danny!/Tyler, The Creator "Hey You" debacle. I'd apologize for the post if I felt I'd not done research on the situation in the background. Read interviews. Asked questions and got no answer, just more questions. I'm not a "fly off at the handle" type of person, especially when it comes to posts on this very site.
In any case, Danny! hit me earlier and linked me to his tumblr, where he's given his side of the story, speaking about trolling and publicity stunts. One of his main sticking points about Payback for months has been the lack of press he felt the project deserved. I get that. I also have followed OF and seen Tyler mention numerous times, at varying stages of success, that he doesn't work with people he doesn't fuck with. I don't like the feeling that artists need of some kind of "stunt" to get ANYONE press, but recognize the nature of the industry. It's a land of make believe at times, and it sucks that pure talent doesn't stick out like it should. I still am not 100% sure that that's what's going on here, and that is why I had chosen to kept my own concerns and doubt about certain aspects of Payback to myself in the first place. Part of the reason I don't play the whole "FIRST!" game with my peers to begin with.
Fact of the matter is, I fuck with Swain musically, I feel I've championed dude when a lot of sites that should have didn't, and I'm confused about the entirety of Payback. Kind of a dud to end this post on, but what else do I have?
Tyler, The Creator & Toro Y Moi "Hey You"
Allow me to get something off of my chest right now. Yes, this is a post regarding a previously-unreleased/unfinished track by Tyler, The Creator and Toro Y Moi, but it's really the story of deception. See, this cut apparently made the rounds on the Internets under the guise of how I first heard it - as a supposed collaboration from Danny!'s Payback album between himself and Tyler, produced by Toro Y Moi. If I'm not mistaken, the second verse on the version I heard was entirely spit by Danny Swain. Just ask MJF. Now, a number of folks have had suspicions about what they heard on Payback, but seeing as I've supported Danny! since I got put onto his music, I gave dude the benefit of the doubt. Now? I feel like I've been lied to and deceived for no real reason. After the posts and the interview, I have no choice but to feel as though this site has been used as a tool by someone who I fuck musically. Whatever works. All I'm saying is, I knew this day would come, and I'm glad I wasn't the one that had to open up the can of worms. I'd feel like a fucking idiot if I didn't speak my piece on the situation, though.
EDIT Tyler's been tweeting about "Hey You" today. I must've been in a fog: Tyler confirms that "Hey You" was just him and Toro Y Moi and doesn't know how Danny got it, and that it wasn't a feature. Speaking of OF, they released a grip of info on forthcoming albums and tours. Check it.

I believe "Long Time Comin'" was a Japanese import bonus track, from Payback, and word is "Goodbye Love" is off the UK import version. Like I said then, I just wanna hear the American version in its entirety. Danny! cooks up the ultime "suck my dick" song to the female that dithces before his stock rose. I imagine there might be a few fairweather friends blowing up his spot right now, so he can get this one off. Not mad at it, especially because Swain has a sound on this one that's stepped in that early '90s New Jack swing flavor, sonically. Payback coming soon?

The release of Payback is a long time coming. Hell, me hearing the album in it's entirety has been a long time coming (and I'm STILL waiting). Getting co-signs from guys like Jay-Z and ?uestlove seem to have been a long time coming for Danny! as well. Riding over some live-sounding drums and dope organs (which always feel like fire to me), Danny Swain speak on all of this. This cut is said to be from the Japanese import version of Payback. I just wanna hear the American version.

I know from the reviews I've read that it's getting a lot of good marks, but I also know the shit was supposed to have been out weeks (a month?) ago. Or something like that. I had no idea Neal Brennan, aka white dude who was writing Chappelle's Show, had a podcast called "The Champs" with Moshe Kasher & DJ Douggpound. He recently had ?uestlove on The Champs, who went in about a number of things, but the most important shit is Jay Electronica's forthcoming album and how Jay-Z discovered Danny! by fucking around on the Internets. I might have to fucks with this podcast on the regular though.

Love the way the bass helps keep the track hype, like those mid-'90s moody cuts. Here's a nice, early morning kiss-off for the Labor Day weekend. You ever have one of those chicks that you wanted to get it? One of those females who you KNOW would be perfect for you, and you for her, but for some reason, as Chris Rock said, you ended up in the friend zone? And you have to start hearing about how this bitch got done in the ass and the dude who smashed spit on her and kicked her out the crib... or she got into a sex party at the club while she was drunk and needs to talk to someone? I'd tell you guys all the info about Payback that I know, but I don't know much. I know it's Danny!'s next project, and is due out late September. Rumor is you should be able to decipher the guest appearances if you decode Danny!'s Tumblr. I'm also told that "Been Away Too Long", a cut from the project, should be out in "just a few days". #shrug - mum's the word until the word is spoken.

That's the word I got last night, and this is the post I wanted to sort yesterday before my son started puking up his entire day's meals. Scoop's (still) on me, though. After what looks like a pretty successful first week of sales for Where Is Danny? (2.0) (considering that he is his own publicist), Interscope handed Danny! his own boutique label. It's called "Wanderland Records", is a joint venture with Interscope, and will be an outlet for Danny! to sign and release whatever the fuck he's feeling like supporting. Or some other shit entirely. So props to him. Also, word is that Where Is Danny? (2.0) will be getting a physical release - check the pics. Hit neph on twitter and say "congrats". And if you want to submit tracks to Danny!, either holler via e-mail (submissions@dannyswain.com), or snail mail demos/CDs to P.O. Box 56161, Atlanta, GA 30343. And if you're trying to hit A3C, be sure to check Danny! out.

Danny! ft. Danny Brown "Theme From A Killing Spree": In digital outlets right now is Where Is Danny?, which I affectionately call 2.0, as the producer we shall not name has had his beats replaced by Danny!’s own tracks. Proper scatterbrained prolific funkery on here, from Danny!’s hilarious bars to intricate things (peep for when an homage to the sun slides in then slides back out. Danny!’s production doesn’t go too ridiculous, either – has that old school digging feel, finding a great sample and just extending it for your own Hip-Hop noodling. The full project features cats like Che Grand, Von Pea, Donwill and others, and is iller than a number of projects that dropped this year. And mind you, I been heard the majority of these rhymes.
