RIP Roc Raida

Feels like he just went into the hospital for the still partially-explained accident he suffered, and now I just got word that the legendary Roc Raida has passed away. Still no official word, but I'm hearing he passed due to complications during surgery?

For now, let's remember one of the true legends behind the turntables...

1996 DMC World practice session

Excerpt from Scratch, where you see him doing the "ninja of rap" routine Rob Swift spoke of in the previous practice session

and here's his 1996 DMC Worlds routine

(not the best quality, but that "ninja of rap" number is so necessary)

1992 DMC USA Finals routine

Tableturns 2nd Anniversary

@ The Ottobar (6/19/2008)

I'll update with official word when I receive it.

EDIT HipHopDX posted a piece on Raida's passing, as has All Hip-Hop.

Here's a few of Raida's mixtapes and albums, which many cats slept-on, but were well-known for their hilarious skits, as well as their fresh cuts...

Roc Raida Old School (1996) (Side A \ Side B) [via Rekordz On Wheelz]
Roc Raida Still Smoking [via Pipomixes]
Grandmaster Roc Raida 52 Beats 2008 [via Ideal Hip-Hop]
Roc Raida The Adventures of Roc Raida [via Cocaine Blunts]
Roc Raida Crossfaderz [via HQ Hip-Hop]

Talib Kweli speaks on Roc Raida.

EDIT It looks like the report(s) about a possible car accident or karate class accident are inaccurate:

The source refused to give details of his illness or injury, or even the cause of Roc Raida’s death, but did state that previous reports of an injury during karate class or a car accident were inaccurate.

I wonder what the real deal is, then...

EDIT Looks like the family has given a statement:

Anthony Williams p/k to the world as The Legendary Grand Master Roc Raida has passed away unexpectedly today Sept 19 2009. He is survived by his wife, 3 lovely daughters, mother and friends. Raida was recently in an mixed martial arts accident, something that he has been practicing for several years. Although he had under gone 2 surgeries with great success, was released to an inpatient physical therapy facility and was in great spirits the past few days. This morning he started to have complications and passed. The family asks for privacy at this time.

DJ Cable Vs. Jay-Z "99 Problems (Super Brooklyn Blend)"

DJ Cable Vs. Jay-Z "99 Problems (Super Brooklyn Blend)": Big. DJ Cable flips the Cocoa B'z "Super Brooklyn" instrumental over Hov's classic "99 Problems". This actually fits very well! DJs, get on this one! I've heard a few blends of this, even over some experimental Jungle, but this blend is the most fun out of all of 'em.

Jinesis & Prickly Pear Coffee Shop 2

I can't stand coffee. Hate the way it tastes. That, however, is the opposite of how I feel about this collection of instrumentals from Jinesis and Prickly Pear. There's a lot of fresh ideas on Coffee Shop 2, and you can tell that they accomplished their goal of not over-producing a track. You can tell that once they got that magical element going, they let it vibe out, as opposed to those who are continuously being meticulous, producing the soul and essence right out of their tracks. It had some things I wasn't too crazy about - its hard to listen to Prickly Pear's "You Know" and NOT think of "The Official", although the featured MCs are doing a lot more than Jaylib did, lyrically (he also revisits Dilla's "Lightworks" with "The Lights", and I'm not really feeling that, either). I'm all for reworking sounds I'm familiar with (see Jinesis' "Live At The Barbecue, Pt. 1"), but some things are better left untouched.

All-in-all, its a solid effort, and something I'd recommend for a Saturday like this... kick back with a brew, maybe on your porch, and vibe while the world crawls by.

Mary J. Blige "Said & Done"

Mary J. Blige "Said & Done" (prod. by Ryan Leslie): Over the last year or so, R. Les has been a name I've been digging. He puts his nice spin on this new MJB track. One of my favorites from her as of late - much more than "The One" and "Stronger", at least.

Props to PDS by way of HHNM.

50 Cent ft. Ester Dean "Hard Rock"

50 Cent ft. Ester Dean "Hard Rock": Um, OK. I thought "Baby By Me" was too easy of a Billboard reach when I heard it, but damn. How you gonna try and be T.I. or whomever on the one track, then try to be on the next? This is horrible.

"Ayo Technology" is looking like a stroke of genius right now!

Oh, this one has drops all over it; props to Karen Civil.

Thee Tom Hardy The Hardy Boy Mystery Mixtape

Yes, you read that right... Don Cannon and 9th Wonder present a new mixtape from Durham, NC native Thee Tom Hardy, who's also on 9th's label, It's A Wonderful World Music Group/The Academy. I've not heard of dude before, and if you're like me, those two co-signs alone are enough to have you check this one out... right? Take a listen and leave a comment on dude's skills.

Here's a lil' Ninja goodie from a decade (or so) ago...

Coldcut & Hexstatic "Timber"

Enjoy what's looking like a good weekend.

Kia Shine vs. Drake

So, word pon di 'Net is that Kia Shine got some BMI cred for Drake's "Best I Ever Had" (which, by the way, is a song I'm too tired of). Here's Kinfolk on the situation:

Word? Drake stated on his blog yesterday that he "wrote the entire composition in Toronto and I borrowed one line from a Lil Wayne song that he produced the BEAT for. The claims of 25% ownership are false". Rap Radar broke it all down, just in case you're confused. I wonder why Kinfolk took the time to even speak on the claims, knowing that his case would be exposed instantly, on these here internets. And it really doesn't hurt Drake, seeing as "Best I Ever Had" has been inescapable this year.

Why would someone be grabbing a fucking Kia Shine beat CD to begin with is another convo altogether...

[video] Jadakiss ft. Ruff Ryders "Who's Real (Remix)"

Start 'Em Out Young...

This cost $21 bucks, plays lil' renditions of "ABC", "Whoomp! There It Is" and other rockin' tracks, and yes it had the ill scratch sounds for the kids.

Peep game, though: my wife copped this. Go wifey! When I get home today, I might have to jack this from him.

EDIT Just found this on Amazon - the Little Tikes Pop Tunes Mixer sounds like a hit at my house. My son told me I could play with this when I got home.

The Angel ft. Jhelisa "Ultra Light"

The Angel ft. Jhelisa "Ultra Light": Here's a fresh, dub-drenched treat from The Angel. The "Ultra Light" single drops on September 22nd, and features this main mix, as well as a "Sustenance Mix" and a remix from DJ Drez. This has a pretty chilling vibe to it, almost cinematic - I could see this being the soundtrack in a suspense thriller, with the femme fatale gearing up for that final fight. Word from Kevin at Supa Crucial is that The Angel's forthcoming ALBUM will differ form this, being instrumental and plunging deeper into the dub. I can't wait to check it out!

This is the latest episode of the syndicated FuseBox Radio Broadcast with DJ Fusion & Jon Judah for the week of September 16, 2009 with some new and classic Hip-Hop & Soul Music, news and commentary.

Our commentary this week focused on the strange imbalance of media coverage & chastisement on 3 acts of incivility by U.S. Public Figures: Producer/Rapper Kanye West, Tennis Superstar Serena Williams & Congressman Joe Wilson.

We talked about the ways both race & class played a role in this media coverage as well as giving some words on the passing of actor Patrick Swayze (R.I.P.) and some other things here and there.

There was no new episodes of the Direct EFX or Black Agenda Report segments due to the length of this week's commentary.

Feel free to check out some recent episodes of the syndicated FuseBox Radio Broadcast here on - all of the shows are clean/radio friendly.

Azage The Bars Outbreak

I've been feeding you pieces of this mixtape over the last couple of months, and this morning Azage hit me with his newest concoction, the complete Bars Outbreak tape. FatLoud Presents HipHop Construction Kit

In 2009, if you're into Hip-Hop and own a computer, you've either tried your hand at production or are a serious producer. Knowing that, what's one thing every producer needs? Fresh sounds. In the never-ending quest to find some new sounds, I recently got the chance to check out a sample CD entitled HipHop Construction Kit, and let me tell you that this has what you're looking for. There's 8 studio-quality kits, composed from damn near 150 Hip-Hop flavored loops. For those of you trying to avoid legal trouble, all loops are royalty-free, so you can use any of these licks anyway you please. The sounds are made to be used in something like 99% of today's audio packages, so whether you use ACID or Fruity Loops, Cubase or ProTools, you can throw these sounds into your software of choice, with no problem. Check out this promo video for more details:

Now, for producers who fancy the dirty, analog sound, this pack might not be for you. I imagine you could fatten up your soul samples with many of these loops, but the sound of this pack is more commercial Hip-Hop, which can work to your advantage. Grab this pack (for the low price of £19.95, which translates to ~$40 or so), and get your freak on. Here are some MP3 demos of what you can do with this HipHop Construction Kit:

See what I'm saying? For those producers who are trying to build their sound libraries, this should be a weapon in our arsenal, especially for the reasonable price. If you're intrigued, hit up for more details. Shouts to Yasmine for the heads up.

Masta Ace & EDO. G ft. Marsha Ambrosius "A's & E's"

Masta Ace & EDO. G ft. Marsha Ambrosius "A's & E's": When this faster-paced beat came on, I was wondering how Marsha was going to sing on this. She doesn't, but the hook still sounds fly. Masta Ace uses words starting with A, and EDO does the same with "E" words. Format is kind of tired, but it works. A&E drops on October 6th.
Shouts to MAC Media.

J.A.M.E.S. WATTS "Say You Will (The Re-Fix)"

J.A.M.E.S. WATTS "Say You Will (The Re-Fix)": NJ's own returns with a Kanye West re-fix to re-introduce you to the next phase of his artistry. James says this was actually written around the time 808s dropped, but with the plethora of MCs dropping their own verses over this back then, he wisely decided to hold off on dropping this one. Welcome to the next phase...

Cy Yung "Da Hollywood Shuffle"

Cy Yung "Da Hollywood Shuffle": I know, I just posted "The Death of Cy Yung" last week, and now I have some new sounds from the Soul Train Dancer: A Tribute to Rosie Perez album? Yup. J. Slikk shot an e-mail over last night featuring "Da Hollywood Shuffle", as well as three more snippets (download everything HERE); word is that A Tribute to Rosie Perez is about 90% done (cover and promo materials are done, with vocals about 90% complete, waiting on features and final tweeks), and is set to drop on November 9th, 2009. It's been four years in the making, so I hope that this is finally dropping.

Looks like a likkle bump in the road might've been what was needed to finally get this long-awaited banger out there? All tracks produced by Slikk, with features from "R.O.E., Rashid Hadee, Primeridian, Melatone, IndySparks, Junclassic, Meilana Gilliard, and more"... keep it locked!!

Curly Castro "First Release"

Curly Castro "First Release" (prod. by Justin M): Castro is the latest edition to the Public Axis camp, and this is a pretty bittersweet cut from him, serving as an introduction, but I have a feeling a lot of you will be able to relate to. Do yourself a favor and introduce yourself.

RIP Patrick Swayze

Just saw word that actor Patrick Swayze died today. He was 57. He succumbed to his battle with cancer.

You're probably wondering why I'm posting this - I'm a child of the 80s, and movies like Dirty Dancing, The Outsiders, Ghost, Road House, Point Break and many other flicks were staples of my growing up, for good or ill. Point Break was my shit, and my wife and my cousin Mike loved Road House. I went to white middle and high schools, and spent many times at parties trying to avoid Dirty Dancing and Ghost.

Plus, being "ghost like Swayze" is just a classic old school Hip-Hop term.

No Need To Fahrenheit 451

This time last year, four branches of the Trenton Public Library were set to close due to budget woes. You'd think that in these days, where things like higher education (and education in general) should be bigger priorities, that shit like this wouldn't even be an issue.

Apparently, some things are more important than smart people.

In Philly, their Free Public Library is set to close all of its branches on October 2nd due to budget woes as well! Is this 1909? How can we NOT have funds for education and free knowledge in 2009?

Sadly, you probably don't think this affects you - you have a computer, you go to school no problem. Have you ever been to North Philly? Take a trip out to LaSalle University, and see how some of the surrounding community lives. Those kids need a library, not just to go research for a book report... they might now own a PC, and that's their only link to the evolving technologically advancing world we live in.

Or that's their refuge from the street life. Think on it.

I really don't get it. If this appauls you like it does me, you CAN do something about it: hit up this link and find out how to make your voice heard about what can be a damaging blow to the future of Philadelphia's children - not to mention this causing a ripple effect throughout the nation.

Christ. Shouts to Spec Boogie for the heads up.
