This Is Thugstep, Vol. 3

With recent news about the Skrillex x Kanye West collaboration, compilations like the This Is Thugstep series are needed now more than ever, if nothing just to say "this shit isn't new: catch-up". While the first compilation showed you a lot of the foundation of this sound (and tracks that exemplified the sound), volume two took it a step further, showing a lot of the refixes that came out after THUGSTEP's formation and how other DJs have freaked the sound. Volume 3 has dropped today, and has a grip of original tunes in this vein. You've got new(er) stuff from Bassnectar (with Lupe Fiasco), Casey Veggies, Cypress Hill & Rusko, Stinkahbell & Psy:am, Heroes x Villains and more, with refix pressure from Santi Junior, Spinstyles and Stratus. Nappy tested, RTD-approved. Artwork again done by @theotisjones, with ClubTapes supporting the movement. It never stops.

Dorrough & Juvenile "Dig It In (Santi Junior x Cookie Monsta Refix)"

My boy Santi Junior uploaded this one - massive refix of this Dorrough tune. Cookie Monsta's not one of my favorite producers, but he knows how to churn out a banger, and this one is the proper amount of video game-y quirk to dig into. Not sure what Santi has in store, but I know it'll be fucking sick.

Santi Junior - Thugstep Motivation, Vol. 1

The boy Santi Junior reps the Netherlands THUGSTEP scene. I'm not sure how big the scene is, but surely after this compilation of previously leaked and new refixes, the world over should be aware of his sound. He's got a great attitude and work ethic - I swear new bits of his drop weekly. Never stops. And from some unreleased originals he's done, I know he's not even begun to do the damn thing.

Disc Jockey Nappy - Thugstep Commission 3

Once again... it's on. Nappy continues with his Thugstep Commission series, with what I feel is the most fully realized mix yet. Not only do you get the huge remixes of Rap cuts from Waka Flocka, Drumma Boy, Big Sean, A$AP Rocky and others from Nappy, Santi Junior, SoundBoy Pussy, Vaski and more, but we get some monstrous cuts from Monstar, Hizzleguy, Aleon Craft, Proper Villains, among others. We ever get two cuts featuring original production, including Elucid's "You Ain't Even Know", which is dropping on Street Bass Anthems 5, and legit broke Nappy's windows. I don't know what your vice is, but it's 4/20, so I imagine you're chiefing something. Pack that bowl / bong / pipe up, light your dutch, and sip that brew. This is one to get rowdy to. Shouts to @_def for the artwork and @ClubTapes for the hosting!

Aleon Craft - Mothership Decatur (The Thugstep Edition)

Been waiting for this one to drop. I had been trying for a bit to get someone to work those Aleon Craft tracks inna THUGSTEP vein, and was glad that SMKA and Nappy linked up. Nappy brought in Santi Junior, who takes the bulk of these remixes and really shows what he's worth (well, teases - dude's got some bangers on the way). This one flips tracks from Mothership Decatur and slyly plays the futuristic spaceship funk into a different zone entirely. You already know. Some great shit for a lovely Friday the 13th, trust.

Heavy D x Tunnidge "Long Distance Girlfriend (Santi Junior Tribute Refix)"

Good to see the homey Santi Junior sorting out the tribute THUGSTEP for the fallen homey Heavy D. He picked a good'un as well, as the reggae vibes fit well over this HEAVYWEIGHT Tunnidge riddim. Pretty sure this was one of Heav's last singles, and showed a bit of a different vibe with the full-fledged Dancehall jawn. Reminds me of Yellowman, actually. Let that boy sing. #RIPHeavyD.

Shade45's DJ Wonder also sorted out a tribute mix, and Peter Rosenberg cooked up a mix for the Hot97 Morning Show. Marley Marl and Mister Cee also paid tribute, and my boy DJ Cable is cooking up a tribute mix as well. Soon come. Rest in power, Heav.

#ThisIsAnger - Out Now!

Just wanted to let all you thugsteppers know that Nappy & Definate's "This Is Anger" EP is available today in all good digital download spots through my RTDLTD imprint. It's been a long time coming - I remember when Nappy laid these vocals down on Definate's nasty riddim, and was in awe at how anthemic this truly is to our movement. Building from that to a full remix project, and securing versions from guys like Spooky, Teeza, Tim Reaper and The Two. Fifteens, as well as introducing heads to the likes of Sheer Dropz and Linton Brown? I feel like this has different flavors for the lovers of this sound - you've got more bouncy, club-ready versions to the darker, more sinister vibes, along with a full-on Jungle rinser and that 215 quirk. I personally tried to build this like the CD maxi singles I would buy back in the day, with a number of variations on a central theme. It's a true testament to what we've been building five years ago - for free. Not sure how often you'll get releases like this from this conglomerate, but there's been a grip of mixes, remixes and refixes given away... support our endeavors and get some BIG tunes to boot!

Santi Junior Presents Ludanice

The homey Santi Junior is the kind of cat who will randomly hit me with a completely refixed project on a Sunday. Or a Saturday. After the week I've had, I'm glad he sent this over. Gave me something to jam out to. Ludacris has been refix fodder for a bit - I know guys like Cable have done wonders with a Luda acapella, and the one like Lunice has been causing quite stir in the EDM community - if you've been paying attention. For you guys out there who might be sleeping, be it on Lunice, Santi or THUGSTEP in general, give this EP a whirl. does exactly what it says on the tin: Luda acapellas, Lunice riddims. Ludanice. Go ham. Check out the sampler then download the full monty.

#ThisIsAnger, Week 1: Nappy x Tetsuo x Santi Junior

Leading up to the September 19th release of the This Is Anger EP, we'll be dropping some refixes and remixes of "This Is Anger", for free. For the first refix, we bring you Santi Junior's "This Is Anger" refix, which finds him taking Nappy's anthemic aggression into a darker zone, with Tetsuo's "My World" playing the perfect blend of grind and funk for Nappy to spew his venom. Santi's come a long way - he kind of reminds me of how Nappy attacked the refixes, with a knack to find the right swing between the vocals and the riddim used. I've got half a gig of Santi refixes that I should be compiling for a large feature next month, so be on the look out for that. Until then, wyle to this. Look for a special, alternate version of "This Is Anger" from Sheer Dropz next month...

DJ Hipnotikk & Santi Junior - Dirty South Thugstep V

The two proverbial young lions of our THUGSTEP consortium, DJ Hipnotikk and Santi Junior, have aligned for this dub-packed team-up, which marks the fifth of Hipnotikk's Dirty South Thugstep series, with a dope title that rings true: Real Recognize Real. These two have consistently brought the thunder with their refixes, but I imagine a lot of you slept. Don't worry - you can catch up with this mixtape. Each DJ goes in with their own refix catalog, featuring some exclusives to this mix and some jams you should already be up on. Action-packed THUGSTEP work out for Father's Day, seen?

The Holodeck Remixes: Event Horizon EP

It was just about a month ago when the Internets got ignited with the Three Pistol Music Remix of Starkey's "Holodeck", featuring lyrical swordsmen Curly Castro and Zilla Rocca setting their light sabers to "murder everything moving", and commenced to do so. Out of nowhere, the diabolical Zilla Rocca passed a leftfield lazy writer (ahem, myself) the acapella and asked if any producers had the knack to attack it. I sent it out to a few compadres, and the young lions DJ Nappy and Santi Junior gave this a proper THUGSTEP rerub, with Nappy flippin' a hectic Coki riddim over these lyrics, while Santi plays it interesting with a previous beat of Starkey's that works well, on a different level. Add these to the maniacal version SixTen turned in? Yeah, you're basically just reading all of this to get to the download links, yeah? Hard bars paired up with boisterous bass, hitting you from every angle. I hope you've got some armor, your Bannertech shields are fully functional, and you have some kind of teleport ready to get you out of here when you can't stomach it. Everyone's #musicmonday needs an #eventhorizon, you feel me?

Lil' Jon x Santi Junior The Real Crunk Rock

Building onto the first proper HOODLUM release (the “U Don’t Like Me” Refixes), one of the crew’s latest findings, The Netherlands’ own Santi Junior has flipped his own refix project, taking the acapellas from Lil’ Jon’s Crunk Rock album and giving it the proper THUGSTEP treatment. I always think that I overthink these things, but it sounds like Santi actually put some thought into this. Or he at least has a great ear for what works. I know it sounds easy, but to make a refix that not only works on a few levels, but lasts, you don’t just beatmatch and let it fly. Or maybe you do – again, I overthink shit. In any case, Santi’s crafted some sick refixes, capturing the rowdy flavor that Lil’ Jon brings when his voice touches a mic device. I’m not sure who Requake is, but I think the couple of refixes that feature his beats are my favorites. Just has a nice swing to them; the hooks take on a new life over that proper sub bounce. Something fresh for the new season, seen?

I just dropped this preview over on HOODLUM, featuring a track from The Real Crunk Rock (The THUGSTEP Edition), a special 10-track refix project that Santi Junior hooked up using the acapellashttp://www.blogger.com/img/blank.gif from Lil' Jon's Crunk Rock album, using tracks from the likes of Caspa, Bassnectar, Flux Pavilion, Requake and more, really sorting out the essence of what the King of Crunk sounds like over these alternate sounds. Here's an example of what you'll hear on the full project:
