Gripz "Hell's Highway"

Gripz "Hell's Highway" (prod. by 2Deep): Been a bit since I've posted some new new from DMV rep Gripz; dude doesn't stop, I told you guys this. Here's a heavy story (backed by a heavy guitar loop) that Gripz concocted. I bet many of you have had dreams (nightmares?) that resemble the images he conjures. These are taken from Poetic Literature 2: Angels & Demons, his next mixtape which I imagine will be dropping in 2010. Who knows, he works so hard it might drop next week!

EDIT Looks like the tape is done and it's dropping next week! I told you!

Bonus Beats Gripz "Microphone Homicide" (prod. by 2Deep)

Sean Boog & Amen "Different Breed"

Sean Boog & Amen "Different Breed" (prod. by Soul Professa): That sample in the intro sounds like some Saturday morning clean the house ish, but when that beat drops... watch out. Word is this is taken from an album entitled Football, Beer & Rap, and album I have zero info on, but sounds like a fucking winner with the 18-34 year old set. Enjoy this one.

The Incomparable Shakespeare ft. BK Cyph "No Baggage"

The Incomparable Shakespeare ft. BK Cyph "No Baggage": Oh wow. Here's a twisted cut from Cyph and Shake from Shake's The British Invasion. The beat on this one might be a lil' left for you guys... or you might latch onto it quick. Had a lil' Jungle flair to it, but then it cuts half-time. Anyways, these two cats rip it to pieces, because they can. Wake up!

Dirty Money x Ted Smooth

Two of my favorite shits, musically, in 2009 were Diddy's Dirty Money crew and blend master Ted Smooth's remix flavor. Seems like the older I get, the more I hark back to the days of my youth - which were filled with Diddy's unabashed jacking of old hits and refixing them into "Hip-Hop Soul", be it with Total or Biggie. Ted Smooth fills the need of the true "blend", the quality remixing that cats like Splash remember from mixtape days of old. I guess it was only a matter of time that Ted would touch some Dirty Money cuts, and boy does he take it back with both of these...

Indie Reviews: $35

That's hard to read, click here

Word on the twitter is that Kevin Nottingham charges indie acts $35 for reviews? What part of the game is that? If this is true, it undermines everything that indie culture stands for. Supporting the culture, and helping it move, is NOT taking ends (i.e. potential sales) from the artists. Period. I don't respect anyone who does that - no matter how big or small.

Most of those cats are spending dumb loot to get their music featured ANYWHERE - if a cat is sending me the album for free, how can I then charge them to review it? Morals = out the window?

I really hope this isn't true. If it is true, that needs to be fixed up really quick.

EDIT Oh wow, it looks like its true. Talk about losing respect.

EDIT Talk about missing the plot. You mean to tell me this blogging shit isn't about sharing your thoughts/ideas with the masses? It's just a way to dupe the artists whose cause you claim to champion? Is that how we're doing it? That's how you get accolades? I've done so much free writing, and while I have been comissioned by labels and artists to write press releases and bios for their artists, I have never and will never charge to write a review on this site. It's totally opposite to what myself and my true peers believe. Using your skills at blogging to get some ends, that's one thing - if done with integrity (like HiPNOTT); that shit doesn't sit with me correctly AT ALL. Now, I'm not sure if dude is mocking or being on the level - either way, that shit stinks, and I'm not feeling that.

I guess it doesn't matter anyways - its not like you write the shit.

EDIT So Kevin Nottingham actually wrote (!) a response. And it's just what I figured it would be: "you gotta pay a lil to get somewhere" b2b "I'm a family man and I have a lot going on in life - server costs - blah blah". He mentioned that the reviews are such a small part of the site - then what the fuck are you charging for them for? And I wonder how many reviews they are getting - especially if, I imagine, the writers get paid for reviewing - are they pocketing the whole $35, or do they split those costs? While I see dude's points, I still thinks its a big slap in the face for something you consider to be a "sliver" of what goes on with your site. If your SOHH/XXL namechecks and other accolades can't do it for you... I don't even know.

And this wasn't some "bomb first, ask questions last" type of reaction - its was a "this dude is making a mockery of the shit that we do, and believing its OK" type of reaction. Thing is, there's no reasoning with assholes like that, if you know them or not. You've lost the respect of a number of your peers, not that you give a shit, which makes it that much more despicable in my eyes.

EDIT So Kevin's no longer selling review for $35 a pop. Shouldn't have been doing it in the first place, nigga.

EDIT And in what should be the final statement on this, Kevin Nottingham has both posted the reviews in question, and fired Sean Deez for not sticking up for his part. Sean sounds like a sucker, and if Kevin put his name on this product, and had a bad feeling about shit like charging artists to review their shit and didn't stand up for it, he should've manned up and not put the wheels into motion. Sucka shit, and I'm sorry it has to be like that, but you did it to yourself, KNOWING you weren't feeling it? I hope those ends are paid back to the artists. That's repulsive.

EDIT charges, too? WTF is the blog game coming to!?

EMS x RTD: ThrowBack Thursday 015

Revalation "We're Here Now" (prod. by Tha Silent Partner): Yeah, I know - it's Friday, but I took it down early last night, and this came in a lil' late. Anyways, it's here now... words from Rev: "I figured this week I'd do a solo joint and start building the anticipation for my new mixtape "The Revalation Will Be Televised: Commercial Interruption" coming Dec.31st. And RTD is one of it's presenters of course!! This joint is actually an unreleased joint from circa 07 called "We're Here Now" produced by Tha Silent Partner of the Let's Make Enemies crew. It's a hard hitting banga with punchlines, a tough beat, & hard rhymes!! Enjoy!"; I believe Refined Hype and Dot Got It are presenting that tape as well - keep it locked!

Method Man & Raekwon "Meth vs. Chef Part 2"

Method Man & Raekwon "Meth vs. Chef Part 2": The original was a personal favorite of mine off of Tical, and while great rappers don't always age like fine wine, I'd rather listen to OB4CL2 and (hopefully) what the Feb. 31, 2010 release of Wu Massacre should be over some of the trap-crack-rap that's out now. And +10 for the snaps at the end.

Shouts to Meka for the CDQ.

We had another great interview this week with the independent Hip-Hop/Soul/Electro music group Dukes of Daville (

Some of the questions we had for the Hinesville & Atlanta, Georgia music duo (consisting of Cedric “Ric aka Ricky Balboa” Lindsey and James “Jimi” Smalls) included their musical backgrounds, how they met up, their former deal at Capitol Records, the current album release that's out now for free download The 13th Floor (available at, how they feel about the current music industry and many other interesting things!

Phatman & Likkle bwoy Release Party (12/17/09)

To celebrate the Phatman & Likkle bwoy mixtape (which was presented by Beat Garden Ent. and RTD), Curly Castro and DJ Ambush will be joined by a couple "bomb squads", AKA duos that are the bomb, simple and plain. This will include friends of the site Zilla Rocca and Nico The Beast as Clean Guns alongside a gaggle of ill acts. $7 on a Thursday night in Philly is nothing - that's recession-ready Hip-Hop flavor for you, plus that will include a physical copy of the mixtape! Living Proof Radio will be broadcasting the show live, so if you can't make it, you have no excuse - you can hear it somehow, someway! This looks like a sick event in a thriving Hip-Hop scene - don't miss it!

BURNTmd "Rap City"

BURNTmd "Rap City" (prod. by Reef Ali): Here's a currently-unreleased cut from BURNT, taken from his ...NOT SO BLACK & WHITE album, which will feature DJ Green Lantern, Akrobatik, Planet Asia, Copywrite, Craig G and the Illmind-produced "Let's Get Ill", which features Reef The Lost Cauze, Copywrite, Reks and Phil The Agony, and is also set to be featured on Illmind's Blaps, Rhymes & Life Vol. 4, which should've been out, but is delayed. Some really underground-leaning shit - loads of lines thrown at you, all of them acidic. Peep those bonus cuts as well!

Bonus Beats "Microphone Doctor" (prod. by Reef Ali) \ "Stand The Rain" (ft. Akrobatik) (prod. by Nastee)

Def Dom x Daniel Joseph "(untitled)"

Def Dom x Daniel Joseph "(untitled)" (prod. by Sincere): Something a lil' different from Espee and the Akai Pros collective. Some seductive intergalactic flavor for you to get you mack game on, produced by Sincere, who has a beat on Deal The Villain's EPic, which drops on RTD Records February 2nd, 2010. Don't forget, Joseph's Pretty/Ugly is available right now.

Amor Jones "Window Pane"

Amor Jones "Window Pane" (prod. by Jansport J): Here's a smooth combo of dope samples and flexible lyricism from two new breed leaders. This should've dropped around the time J's High Power Moves dropped, but... it didn't. Better late than never, nahmean?

Del The Funky Homosapien "Bring Da Ruckus"

Del The Funky Homosapien "Bring Da Ruckus": This is taken from Enter The 38th Chamber, a remix project of El Michels Affair's Enter The 37th Chamber, presented by URB, Fat Beats and Audible Treats, and will also feature Diamond District, A-Plus, Kam Moye, Nightclubber Lang, Sandpeople and Von Pea. Del on this sounds like The RZA, minus the speech impediment.

Yeah I said it.

DJ Cable x Rock The Dub Fuck Thugstep Vol. 1

Here's a sick mixtape from my boy DJ Cable, done in conjunction with Ego Thieves and your good ol' RTD family. You know how we do with this THUGSTEP thing, and when Cable presented the idea to do a mix for RTD before the end of the year, I was all for it. It evolved into a bigger thing when the Ego Thieves camp got involved (you love that cover art, right?), and turned out to be pretty monstrous! DJ Nappy would be so proud - just got a kite from him, he'll be home before you know it. Anyways, enjoy some Hip-Hop/Grime/Dubstep hybrid sounds, featuring a host of exclusives from Cable, some champion Nappy refixes and some tough tough tunes in general. Fuck THUGSTEP, and enjoy this mix!

Bassnectar "Boom Box (DJ Vadim Remix ft. Pugs Atomz)"

Bassnectar "Boom Box (DJ Vadim Remix ft. Pugs Atomz)": Good to see the homey Pugs and Vadim doing so much good music together. This one has a nice low-end, really old school slap to it. Sounds like Pugs is rappin' from within the boom box! Drop this one and stab out, pat'nah!

[video] Mos Def "Supermagic"

Dumbfoundead ft. Intuition & Nocando "She Don't Care (Remix)"

Dumbfoundead ft. Intuition & Nocando "She Don't Care (Remix)": Perpetuum would be so happy about this one; I've seen cats like Dumb and No on a lot of the freestyle battle videos, and they both do their fuckin' THING, lyrically. Intuition is no slouch, either, and in preparation for his Girls Are Gonna Like Me tape, which drops on December 21st via 2DBz and Kevin Nottingham, and serves as a prequel to his sophmore LP, Girls Like Me, which drops on January 26th. These three made me like "Paris, Tokyo" lol.

Bonus Beats Intuition "Strut Bounce" (reference verses)

BOOGNIGHTS "My Life": BOOG just hit me with's 121st entry in their freestyle series, I hear dude going in over that lurching track. Dude's getting a lot of good looks as of late, and I've got a feeling 2010 will be a nice year for him.

BK Cyph "Adrenaline"

BK Cyph "Adrenaline" (prod. by DviousMindZ): Damn. Not often am I getting a track that's matched perfectly with the lyrics being spit. You get more "dude's nice, but that beat is wack" (or vice versa) than true compliments. Both of these guys are doing their damn thing separately, but I had no idea they were linking up and creating this HEAT for the winter. Big guitars, beastly rhymes. You don't need much more than that!

Kounty Boyz "Over There"

Kounty Boyz "Over There": Here's one of those tracks where the title is said a lot throughout the rhymes. It's got a big beat and is something you can stagger drunk and enjoy yourself to. I wish it was summertime so I could blast this and sit on my porch. I guess Tampa Bay doesn't have those problems. Shouts to Money $Ron.

Deadpool #19 Preview

Should be dope. Spotted at CBR, in this article with Deadpool writer Daniel Way.

[video] Timbaland ft. Drake "Say Something"

[video] GLC "To A Gangster"

Gucci Mane "Danger's Not A Stranger (Diplo Remix)"

Gucci Mane "Danger's Not A Stranger (Diplo Remix)": Hm. Wasn't expecting this one when I heard Dip was going to be remixing cuts from Gucci's Cold War mixtape series. Oddly enough, this not only fits very well, but sounds like what I'd expect Gucci rapping over to begin with. The piano fits very well; good show, Diplo!

I still say Diplo's "Angels" remix > this.

MP3 via Miss Info.

EDIT Whoa @ this "Fuck Diplo" steeze.

Dutch New York "Yeah Yeah Yeah Freestyle"

Dutch New York "Yeah Yeah Yeah Freestyle": You already know what time it is when this instrumental comes on. It's been a minute since I've heard some new ish from Dutch, but fear not, the second CD in his Perfect Crime series will be dropping in January. You should remember the first Perfect Crime tape, right? Fix up, get familiar, and get prepared for the next chapter.

Shouts to twelvetwentysix.

Tom Chase 100 Yard Dash Mixtape

I hit you guys with "The Catalina Wine Mixer" over the summer, and I'm glad to bring you Tom Chase's 100 Yard Dash mixtape, featuring various spitters from the Elite Assembly, as well as some choice solo jawns. This is a great showcase for his individual skills, the skills of his niggas, and it's another dope prequel to 30,000 Feet High & Rising, the full St. Joe Louis project that will be brought to you by RTD and Potholes In My Blog. Check out for that, but in the meantime... catch up!

DOWNLOAD Tom Chase 100 Yard Dash Mixtape

L.E.G.A.C.Y. "Officer Kickass"

L.E.G.A.C.Y. "Officer Kickass" (prod. by Nick Tha 1da): Here's a new joint from Leg's, taken from the Brake Fast Records release Cases, a concept album that's described as a "1960's crime drama-inspired album is a breath of fresh air in these times of exhaustive mix-tape releases and the invariable LP format. As each detailed story advances the discordant plot line to play out more like blockbuster movie than an album". Think A Prince Among Thieves; I miss these types of albums. Beats from the likes of Tom Delay, Mark Henry and Nick Tha 1da, with rhymes from A-Class, Trace Blam, Mic Brown, Seph Jones, 4th Down, A6, IronSoul and Xtra.

Plus, Leg references both Kerry Von Erich AND Bret Hart!

Cases is available now via iTunes and CDBaby. Shit like this is sorely needed.

Bonus Beats A-Class "In Case I Find" (prod. by Tom Delay)

Juan Epstein (12/08/2009)

Damn, I was just (re-)listening the Season 3 premiere yesterday, and they hit us with the next one? Good work, Ciph and Rosenberg! If you've listened to yesterday and today's morning shows, you should know what Peter goes in on for a minute - I had a feeling he wasn't trying to let that go lol.

Cool Aide ft. Has-Lo "I'm The Best Mayne"

Cool Aide ft. Has-Lo "I'm The Best Mayne": Here's a trunk rattler from iCON and Chum's Flavor Ade, to help you tri-state niggas get amped about Friday's Flavor Ade release party in Philly, which is brought to you by a gang of quality people, including this very site. You guys should really know about my appreciation of Eli Porter, and with the homey Has-Lo on this? No brainer. Blast this, then head out to the show on Friday!
