Lil' Wayne Tha Carter III [review]

So one of the most anticipated Hip-Hop albums of the last 5 years or so is finally here. Does Lil' Wayne finally make good on his "greatest rapper alive" claims, or does he just die slow?

"3 Peat"
It's not really sensical to call a track "3 Peat" when you didn't get the ring on the first two.

"Mr. Carter (ft. Jay-Z)"
Oddly enough, Weezy can't even be saved by a decent Jigga verse and a decent Just Blaze beat. You'd imagine that trio would come with some serious fire, but this is worse than "Hello Brooklyn 2.0".

"A Milli"
Can't help it, I love this beat. I love it so much that I have Wayne's ridiculous lines committed to memory, like "tougher than Nigerian hair", and my favorite, "I can turn a crack rock into a mountain". What kind of boast is that, and how is that possible? Why would you want a crack rock that big?

"Got Money (ft. T-Pain)"
Such a ridiculous use of computerized voices over electronic beats. I didn't think niggas could niggerize computers this bad.

"Comfortable (ft. Babyface)"
What the fuck is Babyface doing on a Weezy album? This track is pretty dope for what it is, except with Wayne's dumb lines ("I got game like EA"). Kanye is mad subdued on the beat, but it works.

"Dr. Carter"
Cold, cold beat. I wonder how much Swizzy got paid for this one. I do find it odd that Wayne is the doctor trying to resurrect Hip-Hop, when he's arguably one of the reasons the shit is dying.

"Phone Home"
I always thought this nigga was an alien. Now he admits it.

"Tie My Hands (ft. Robin Thicke)"
I actually like this one. I was a fan of "Shooter", oddly enough. I can get with this sly Robin Thicke beat. Lovin' that smooth bass.

"Mrs. Officer (ft. Bobby Valentine)"
Why follow up a dope R&B collab with a fucked up one?

"Let The Beat Build"
This beat sounds like Kanye from 5, 6 years ago. I kind of wished this didn't have the drums in it; that sample is cold enough. Dude is getting saved by dope beats, though. EDIT Props to 2DB for uploading the instrumental to this one.

"Shoot Me Down (ft. D. Smith)"
I guess Wayne is going introspective on this? I can't take this anymore...

"Lollipop (ft. Static Major)"

RIP Static.

"La La (ft. Brisco & Busta Rhymes)"
David Banner is a fool for this beat. I do not like Weezy's "I'm richer than y'all, I got a bank full of pride" line. What kind of dizzy shit you spoutin'? This should've been a Bus-A-Bus solo cut. I love this beat!

"Playing WIth Fire (ft. Betty Wright)"
How much did he pay Miss Wright?

"You Ain't Got Nuthin' (ft. Juelz Santana & Fabolous)"
Fab's verse is the truth. The rest of it? Not so much.

"Don't Get It (Misunderstood)"
The only way we misunderstand Weezy is depending on how much lean he drank before he wrote his joints. Why is this track damn near 10 minutes? And is all of that Al Sharpton hate really necessary?

I don't see the point in even trying to bring up Weezy's rhymes. While dude can keep a flow throughout a tune, he isn't the best writer, especially when people try to compare him to a Jigga or Nas. He's not even in that realm. And with albums like this, that contain some hot beats and some dope rhymes, dude hasn't gotten that one classic album yet that's sorely needed to solidify his spot within the game as a true entity. He's just a glorified mixtape rapper, period.

rock the dub gives Tha Carter III 2 out of 5 stars. While there are some dope beats, and Weezy can trip up on a decent line every now and again, there's no way that this is his classic album. Maybe the best album out of his catalouge, but that's not saying much at all.

Burn Deez: "A Milli", "Dr. Carter", "Let The Beat Build"

Tha Carter III is in stores NOW. Boo Goo Doo Boom has also reviewed Tha Carter III, and gave it a more favorable rating than I did overall.

It seems like you went in to the review with your mind already made up.

You dont know wat u talkin about Waynes lines are the best out there right now.You just hearing his music u aint listening to it .If you sit down and listen to what he is saying instead of listening to the beats it makes sense. Ill admit he does hit that lean to hard and comes out wit some stupid stuff like a Mille but mostly all his is stuff is lyrically inclined and u just cant get it in your mind that he is the best rapper alive for a reason. You just a low life that gets off on getting on people and thats exactly what he was talking about Rev. Al for.To put down people like you just another person puting him and everybody else down for hating something you dont understand because u aint went thru it. Lil Wayne is a Hip Hop legend. He is up there wit B.I.G and Tupac and always will be no matter what ignorant people like you say.

@Joe - not necessarily. I went at this review trying to see if this is truly Wayne's classic LP, something he desperately needs to solidify his spot in the best of all time.

@trey - Wayne putting himself in the same breath as Biggie and Pac is ignorance. Trust, I'm listening and hearing Weezy, but nigga ain't saying nothing. I understand Weezy, I get it - he's a Martian. What I don't get is the blind acceptance of his work, like he's truly writing some sharp shit. Dude can flow, but his content is just... wack.

Like Wayne said, he's just misunderstood. You shouldn't judge something you don't know about. Just because he doen't write the songs doesn't mean he don
t have nothin to do with them bein wrote. People hat really words let alone real people. THIS MESSAGE IS FOR ALL HATERS: When you get the nuts to say what you feel on a stage, in front of a crowd that acually like you swagger let be know then you'll see reality. I have came to the conclusion that hatters are what a person needs to survive. Their just verification that your doin something right because you do it better than they could ever!!!So Hater's continue to hate you make Wayne BETTER!!

Another review based on real emotional connection - i can't never credit anyone who judges based only on his emotional feelings. Its pretty obvious u don't really like anything Wayne does thats cool - There are many rappers out there i don't like but i dont cry in my bad because a rapper doesn't make music i like. i simply don't listen to it. If u had based your review based on Wayne's history and what you may think this album is trying to accomplish then i could be interested in knowing how u really feel about this album. Did u know that Carter I & II were really lyrical but Wayne did not reach his expectations as far as sales and fan base. Why make another theme/lyrical album when you have already proved you can do it? I don't mind Wayne trying to experience with music and the product actually came out surprising to me. you can't tag a couple of lines to try justify what Wayne means to you (personally and emotionally). Lemme give another example: i like Nas but i don't always like everything he put out, Nas ain't always so lyrical. If u don't like Wayne just don't listen and leave your mindless comments to anyone who cares. oh btw not even Michael Jackson tried to re-make Thriller a bunch of times. Real artists experience with music and try new ways to express themselves.

@ventoa - How do you read my review and get that I am basing my opinions on emotions? It seems like Weezy fans are the emotional ones - quick to come to bat for their hero when someone says something that isn't up and down praise of him. If I was to solely review things I knew I would like, that'd be a bit of a copout and pretty much unnecessary. I could just post "hey, I like this".

I can respect an artist who tries knew things and finds new ways to express themselves. I am not sure that is it with Wayne, though. Aside from the bits of tomfoolery in the end, and the Katrina track, what is Wayne really saying or doing that hasn't been said or done before? Please, enlighten me.

Hmmm...The review sounds like a Hiliary supporter talking about Barack Obama like you really had intentions on voting for him.

If Weezy is killing Hip-Hop. Exactly what are you doing for it? Are you talking to the kids, are you boycotting bad rappers? Just what are you doing besides complaining?

Please advise.

khal said...

First off ... who is complaining? Giving my opinion about one CD hardly equals me complaining about a thing.

What am I doing for Hip-Hop? I started a blog to give shine to the game on a whole, including posting up free music from up-and-coming acts, giving reviews on mainstream and underground releases, setting up a 2-disc FREE compilation of strictly hip-hop tracks, giving interviews... so much. I also buy Hip-Hop CDs, from the Jaylib 2xCD re-release of Champion Sound to the recent Baby Loves Hip-Hop disc for my seed - I guess you could say I "boycot bad rappers", but aside from expressing my views on them here, they get no real play on my blog or on my stereo.

I'm doing a hell of a lot for a genre and scene that I grew up and will probably die loving. No complaints at all, aside from the ones that are clogging the comments here.

What are YOU doing for Hip-Hop?

Carter 3 = good album to bang in the whip, but not even in the "classic" conversation

Dude is a prolific artist with all the songs, mixtapes, features, but as far as in the league of B.I.G., 2Pac, Jay-Z, and Nas? Nope.

Where is his undisputed classic album? What are his classic lines?

Please enlighten me.

I find it quite humorous that there are 9 preceeding comments about Weezy F Baby and that's 9 more than this whole fuckin page got...

fam(s)

My guy's got an ALBUM out... let Wayne do wayne, let Khal do Khal however he wanna do his reviews (which dont seem as biased as you are all making it seem) and COME CHECK OUT CY YUNG's ALBUM

http://www.rockthedub.com/2008/06/cynergy-soundz-cy-yung-yall-gon-soon-c.html

and in addition... apples to apples oranges to oranges.. Wayne is a legend... he is the greatest right now, and im going to tell you why. Its not for the lyrical content because dude's about as consistent as Larry Hughes in a Bulls or Cavaliers uniform when it comes to that... taking that further, Wayne *Like Larry Hughes in Cleveland* knew there was someone greater on that team than he was and he wasn't really that spectacular at all when it came to the greater player's area of appeal. So instead of full out admitting it, he mentions it once or twice a year, and goes out everynight and puts up more shots than anyone else. He'll either make or he'll miss. The field goal % is low but he'll still average 20 a game cuz he TOOK MORE SHOTS THAN ANYONE ELSE! All the albums, all the collabs are his shots. Now given he has a bit more of a consistency than Larry Hughes, he's still done more to be in the public eye than anyone else the last 4 years. So let's say if all the Kobe's T-Macs, Lebrons, Melos, D-howards, and whatnots of the league decided to just up and retire today... who would then be the elite to a legendary status... LARRY FUCKIN HUGHES!!!! Even when Jordan came outta retirement for the Wizards, Larry Hughes extra effort to make himself great in his own sense outshined dude. Carter to Carter... SAME THING.

All in all what i'm saying is Wayne is great for not necessarily hip hop but for all music in general. He's taking his shots, making that extra effort to be the person he always looked in the mirror and said he wanted to be. And nobody on any level can touch his status at the moment cuz all the greats retired and stayed retired or struggled to return, or met their untimely demise. In the same sentence Larry Hughes is Larry Hughes and he's good for what he does.. that doesn't mean we want to see 200 more of him in the near future. Only one can exist or another will become overkill.

It really isn't the content here... its the character, and that character is something music hasn't had in a couple years. Im not a fan, but i can admit based on observation.

He's got commercial success in the bag...

Tha Carter III is absolutely an awful follow up to two pretty solid albums (Tha Carters I and II). The problem that I find myself having with such a release lies directly in the title. No where in any of the 16 song tracklist is there any resemblance to the gritty, gully lyrical wordplay Wayne has shown on the previous two Carters. In addition where is Marley? Where is the play on the drug house Tha Carter? These were what I felt made Tha Carter albums different and enjoyable. Tha Carter theme from albums 1 and 2 tied the majority of the songs together in a coherent fashion. This is completely void in Tha Carter III. Wayne did exactly what many thought he would. That is too sellout. Case in point is the first single "Lollipop". Despite my actually liking of the song, this is not Wayne and does not belong on a Carter series album. Wayne seriously played on his popularity and relied more on his swagger for this album. I do not totally dismiss this album as a failure. It was decent at best. The production was sicker than your average but only because of Wayne being hip hop's IT GUY. This CD definitely needed another title to quell my frustration. Not only did it need another title but a different album cover. Was Wayne serious mimicking NaS and Biggie? Thats sooo humorous. It's a totally mockery of hip hop history. I LOVED Wayne however after this release I must say that I will stop my listening at Tha Carter II. He is a great mixtape artist as well as a featured artist. When it comes to his own album releases however, Dear Mr. Toilet Wayne just shit...the bed. With all the hype in the world this album SHOULD have been an instant classic solidifying Tha Carter series as one of the more remarkable hip hop trilogies of all time. Unfortunately, when I mention Pac, Biggie or Jay - Z i might 1,2,3 4get Weezy Baby. Sorry Wayne Sooou Whooop.

This is a skewed and biased review. When you have to say things like "I couldn't help it" when you liked a song, you know you have serious issues. You pay compliments to every artist on every song and seem to think they would be better if weezy wasn't on them. "I actually like this one". Again, it's like you're embarrassed or disappointed with yourself for liking a lil wayne song.

This review is garbage. When you review something you're supposed to be open minded and honest with an audience that might not originally share a dislike for the same artist you do. You're supposed to critic the songs not the artist. You sir, fail. You're too busy trying to make sure he's not compared to other rappers like Jigga and Nas. He's not the best writer? Yeah thats cause he swagger impromptu rhymes half his material.

If hes glorified it's because he busted his ass to get there. He has released over 4 cd's and 100 songs free to the public and his fans before dropping this album and people who want to stand on his nuts without a practical or logical explanation should find something more productive to do with their time.

If you think I was coming across as being embarrassed or disappointed with liking anything, you obviously are trying to put that on the review. My writing, my reviews, everything about me is all about bigging up what I like, and being honest about what I don't. Even if it's not "mainstream" or if it's "against the norm".

Again, dude put himself in that lane, saying he was the greatest rapper of all time. The only thing preconceived idea going into this CD was "does he come out with the classic he needs to be on that list he is putting himself into". And he didn't.

How I wasn't open-minded is beyond me - again, you obviously have only peeped this blog off this one review, and don't see the broad range of influences and genres of music I am into and write about. I am not writing for those who might like Weezy, and vice versa - I am literally pressing play and putting a sentence or two about how I feel on the disc. Simple as that.

And since when does his "swagger impromptu rhymes" put him in a lane of best writers? Weezy hardly stays on topic throughout this disc, even if there is a topic.

True, dude definitely is on his grind. He stays making music. And especially in the last few years, I have dug his output (the drought mixtape that came out last year, for example). But just because he has a dope work ethic does not make him a dope writer.

And I have found something more productive to do with my time... check the rest of the blog.

Don't try to start an argument based on your assumptions about what my comments mean. I don't kiss anyone's ass, whether it's Jigga or Pac. If I like something, damnit I'm gonna say it. And if I am surprised that I dug something, that's the truth.
