Leon Rainbow and Will Kasso Talk the History of Jersey Fresh Jam

This week, Trenton365 had Leon Rainbow and Will Kasso on the program to talk about the Jersey Fresh Jam, which will be back again for its 11th annual event on August 6 at TerraCycle in Trenton. They not only break down the history of the Jam, but the importance of Graffiti in both the art world and the culture of hip-hop. Trenton's been doing this, but it's always good to sit down and look back at the journey. I personally make it a point to hit the Jam for a bit every summer, and I think you should as well.

For more details on this year's event, hit up jerseyfreshjam.com.

It's a $10 entrance, and BYOB, so act like you know.

I'm on the premises and will be attempting to maintain a live blog (jacking free WiFi out here is a mother), as well as keeping photos posted via the RTD Facebook page. Keep it locked!

Save the date on this one. There's no space for additional writers, nor are the musical acts announced, but this is ALWAYS a great open-air event in my city. Hit up the Facebook page for more details.

Jersey Fresh Jam 2013: The Aftermath

I know, I know, yesterday I said I'd be doing my live-blogging dean. There was something about the Wifi out there, and just wanting to EXPERIENCE, that had me not sitting at my laptop for the duration of yesterday's Jersey Fresh Jam 2013. And I'm glad I didn't.

See, some experiences aren't experiences until they're experienced. Being able to be with my people, taking in the sights and sounds of another Jersey Fresh Jam? You can't put it into words. It's just an amazing time with a creative group of amazing New Jerseyans. From all of the talented graffiti artists (who did everything from painting Hunter S. Thompson to Game of Thrones characters) to the talented acts like Black Collar Biz and the Blackout Kings, Molly Rhythm, Skrewtape (who hit me with a copy of his Skumbag Millionaires album), DEMO, and many others getting on the stage and showing the enormous talent that's housed within the 609 area code. I didn't get to build with EVERYONE I wanted to, but that's for another time. There's just something in the air when NJ hip-hop family gets together.

I won't take too much of your time; I'll let these pictures do the talking. Here is my collection of shots from the Jam, as well as the awesome pics from V2Gphotography (whattup, Venomous?!?!). After the jump, I have (Blackberry) video from the Black Collar Biz and Biz Mighty performances. If I see more, I'll post more. UPDATE Here's the Trentonian's piece on the Jam.

Good to see Black Collar Biz performing on the 23rd of September as well. Truth.

#JFJ Hot Outside

Hot outside. Very hot. The thing with the Terracycle spot is that it's great and in the cut, but it also has no shade/trees in the open area. I'm in a secret chamber of the building doing this post right now. I am reserved in the fact that I've not met my personal quota, but it just wasn't happening. I got to see a lot of my local Jersey fam though: Tone Liv, Self, Black Collar Biz, Phace, Skrewtape and plenty more cats have been here. Seen FEED rock with Divine Drummah, as well as saw King Don (above) and KV do their thing. I got to meet neph from thehiphophead.net, and I'm still waiting on seeing cats like Daniel Joseph and Jermaine.

Shit, word just hit from Jermaine - the Trenton Police shut the music down. I saw them earlier making the vendors move out of the way, but the music had been at a VERY decent level. Might be a permit issue. What the fuck?!?! Hit the FB for images and shit, we'll see what's good.

The Atelethon (6/09/2012)

I feel weird breaking this down as all of the information is there, but this is dope. The heads who made the Trenton Atelier what it is need a new home. This Atelethon, which I believe the Trentonian is helping throw, will feature everything that made this spot dope, from live music/poetry/dance to art workshops. 10AM to 10AM, starting June 9th. I'll make it through there at some point. Help raise some funds!

Jersey Fresh Jam 2012 Mixtape Submissions

In 2010 and 2011, I've helped put together the mixtape for the Jersey Fresh Jam - shouts to Leon Rainbow for allowing me to be a part of it. These tapes have helped highlight the Jersey Hip-Hop scene, bring funds back to the Jam for future projects and also help cultivate talent for other shows. Instead of dealing with cats submitting tracks via e-mail, they've got a submission form set up where you can enter your info AND submit a track. If you're from Jersey and make that Hip-Hop, you should be up on this. Trust me. Full details HERE - the Jam is on the 11th of August, so get your submissions in early!

Black Collar Biz "Soul of the Message"

You saw the video for this earlier this week, and I figured I'd drop the track today, as the Soul of the Message event goes down TONIGHT at the 219 Gallery in Trenton. The boy Biz has been a big supporter of the local Trenton Arts scene, and will be performing at the event tonight. He flips Jay Electronica's "Dear Moleskine" instrumental into a nice theme for this event. Dude's wise beyond his years - enjoy this one.
