Main Course Blood, Sweat & Tears: A Soulja's Course

I love great producer/MC tandems. Cats who really link up and go in on some music shit. KhemLab member Main Course and producer Holy Soulja have some 50 tracks in the can, recorded between 2008 and 2010, and this project assembles some of the gems, and is the first of two albums from these two (Kane Courso is on the way). MC is one of those cats who puts it all on the line, for the music. Dude’s got a lot of heart, and dips his pen inward, bleeding on the pad. Soulja has a dope, varied style, allowing MC to take the beat and go on a different journey than the last. Book your flight now – it’s free!

[rock the dub Interview]: Joulz Il

Been a minute for a lot of things... it's been a while since I did an interview on RTD, and its been a while since Joulz Il told me he was quitting Hip-Hop (and about two years since my last sit-down with Jou). That's one of those things I can't stand, when naturally-talented individuals get tired and walk out. I understand where he was coming from, but that didn't mean I liked it. Coming off of his amazing features on Offshore Drilling, as well as the other things he/we have bubbling, it made no sense to me, so when I got the word that he was not only back, but had a number of projects ready to let go right now? All over it. I had to get some words in with him about the past year, his big ideas for 2010 and where he sees himself both within the Hip-Hop game and in 2011. Check it out.

khal: So, how did 2009 treat Joulz Il? What are some of the highlights of your year?

Joulz Il: 2009 was a transitional year for me. The loss of my grandfather and the birth of a new member of my family were all in the span of about seven months. Musically, I was blessed to have been a part of the Kid Hum/RTD Offshore Drilling project, blessed to have released Joulz Il & RTD Present: The Il Before the Storm, and to have collaborated with artists such as Chanes, The Main Course, Sky 7th and others. Those projects and collaborations were the highlights of the year for me. They let me stretch my legs a bit.

khal: Around the middle of ’09, there was a lot of talk/leaks from your Il Identity project, but we’ve not seen or heard about it dropping. What’s the story on that project?
Joulz Il: Funny you should ask. The Il Identity was actually released on New Year's Day! Its part of a trilogy of albums that I'm hoping everyone will feel.

khal: How soon can people expect to get parts 2 and 3 of the trilogy?

Joulz Il: Thats a really good question. The Il Supremacy is going to be available on January 22 and The Il Ultimatum will be available on February 12.

khal: Three projects in the span of two months, dope. What is this all building up to?

Joulz Il: The Il Trilogy is a precursor to my full length album entitled The Return Of The Beatdown.

khal: Why did you chose the title The Return Of The Beatdown?

Joulz Il: Honestly, it just came to me. Lyrically, people have gotten away from everything a beatdown would entail. The entire game went on a vacation and came back wearing skinny jeans, belt chains, and too little t-shirts. Me personally, I could never get with that. I miss the good old fashioned, passionate feel of running up and just swinging on someone that acts like M.O.P., Busta Rhymes, Scarface, Sean Price, Mystikal and a slew of others used to bring. Just seems like everyone got so used to being a robotic version of themselves and singing off key. It just made me want to bring that back, hence, The Return Of The Beatdown.

khal: Anyone who’s heard your output, be it “My Microphone” or your earlier works, has to know that you’re a gifted lyricist. Why do you think skills like yours are often overlooked when it comes to the mainstream Hip-Hop community?

Joulz Il: Truthfully, people are afraid of lyricists. Lyricists make you re-evaluate your rap career and whether or not stringing a bunch of punchlines together is a really good idea. Actually, labels have to make their money and there has been more money made from the new breed of music (i.e. dance songs, blatant pseudo-thug fairy tales, etc.) than from the songs with outright lyricism that stay true to the core of where hiphop started. Suffice it to say, even blogs have now resorted to writing reviews and only featuring songs from people who are already on. People want attention and its easier to get that when you go with the "HOT RIGHT NOW" instead of the "CAN CREATE CLASSICS" guild. I believe I fall into the latter.

khal: Are you working on any other projects outside of your series of releases?

Joulz Il: Actually, yes I am. The KhemLab project has been in the works for a while now with artists like Junclassic, Sky 7th, The Main Course, Chanes, Cy Yung, Articulate, Pugz Atomz & WhyGee. Think of it as a new Wu-Tang (ed. note: more information on this as it develops). So many emcees and each one brings their respective flow to the table. I'm definitely excited about that. I'm also looking forward to doing another "Joulz Il & RTD Presents" project later in the year.

khal: We can do that whenever. What are some of your goals and aspirations within the game?

Joulz Il: I just want to be heard. Period. I don't have to be the most famous. I just want to be able to be thought of when people mention dope lyricists. I have to be in that conversation. Other than that, I'm open to whatever happens. I've always been a fan of the arts, both music and theater, and this is the year in which I have been blessed to do both.

khal: In January 2011, where do you think your work will have taken you?

Joulz Il: If God loves me and hard work pays off, I will have at least been quoted once as having a verse that was flawless in someone's book. My expectations are realistic, but my desires outweigh that. I want 2011 to be the point that people ask themselves, "Who in the blue Avatar hell is Joulz Il and what rock/cave has the industry been hiding him in?"

khal: Many might not know, but you were ready to hang your pen up and call it a day at one point. What made you reconsider?

Joulz Il: People who listen to my music and basically threatened me! Ha! Between Entity Starr looking at me like I was half crazy and just about every fourth person who knew me or had the chance to meet me asking me why I was quitting, I couldn't actually walk away. I love Hip-Hop too much to just stop, so I just took a break. Didn't write. Didn't rhyme. Didn't go near a microphone and I guess the hunger just woke up. I'd hear something online or catch a song on the radio and think to myself, "Duke, come on.....you can do that". One thing led to another and here's where we are now. A trilogy of albums coming out and me feeling rejuvenated and in love with music again.

khal: Before we wrap this up, do you have any final thoughts and/or shouts you’d like to kick?

Joulz Il: If you love Hip-Hop, then this shout outs for you. For everyone who's ever downloaded anything of mine, thank you. For everyone who's ever made a comment, thank you. For anyone who ever gave me free anything just on the strength of "I heard your song", thank you. I'm just looking forward to making the best music possible for you all and for the droves of people who haven't gotten the chance to get to know Joulz Il. Happy JOU Year to all and to all a good fight!

The Return Of The Beatdown will drop on RTD Records in 2010; stay tuned for that, as well as info on The Il Trilogy, KhemLab and more! Stay in the loop with Joulz Il via twitter and Bandcamp.

Joulz Il The Il Identity

Today marks a new chapter in the career of the MC known as Joulz Il. Last year, heads were asked to take part in an Il Experiment, which garnered interest and brought people some ill music. The New Jou Year has given us the fruit of that labor in The Il Identity, which can be download for free via Joulz Il's Bandcamp page. You should be familiar with some of these cuts, while others might be knew, but know that they are all dope, and all are produced by Entity Starr. Thing is, this is just the tip of the iceberg... the next couple of months are about to get very hot and hectic for Hip-Hop. All of that will be revealed on Monday, when I bring you a special Q&A with Joulz about 2009, his forthcoming projects, and beyond. For now, preview the cuts below and do yourself a favor - download them!

Main Course & Joulz Il "Be Easy"

Main Course & Joulz Il "Be Easy": Here's Joulz' second Colorado Hip-Hop link-up. Main Course reps the CO, and with Joulz contributing the hook and a dope verse, their contrasting styles link up well. MC let me know that he has two albums (one free, one for a fee) set to drop next month. No title on either (as of yet), but keep an eye peeled for both.

REAL TALK: Joulz Il

My boy Joulz il has been frustrated... he won't talk to me about it in depth, but I know he has. We put out The il Before The Storm, and it seems like its been lost in the shuffle for whatever reason. I try to not dwell on things that didn't go my way, just like I don't like over-hyping my triumphs, but I think some of the words from this post migth be echo'd in the convos of many an MC in 2009:

For me, it always seems as if Hip Hop comes with the jagged pill of reality for you, if you don't have a huge following or if you don't have the money to really get your thoughts out to the masses. Its almost a daily struggle not to get jaded when I know for a fact that I really don't have the resources to get the music out to the people that I would like to have it. That's really the most frustrating part of it all. With all the new mediums of putting music out and all the millions and millions of DIY emcees, Im starting to feel like Im getting lost in the shuffle. This is a discouraging notion. How do you continue to do what it is that you love when what it is that you love doesn't love you? Even typing that, I had to laugh. The greatest exercise in futility for me is being an emcee who has something to say, has the ability to say it, but yet has no one who will listen to what he is saying. I often wonder if I should just go to the microphone one day and just spew out the most unintelligible and non-tangible gibberish and then immediately put it online and pub it as the greatest song ever. Send it to the djs and press them to play it. Submit it to every blog and hope that they post it up. What if THAT'S the song that people start to pay attention to me by? How would I feel? Would I be able to live with that? Honestly, I cant say that I would.

It's a tricky situation these days, and I honestly feel bad for talented individuals who can't get their spit out, or get their bars heard. Dumb fans need teaching? I don't know. I'm trying to figure it all out myself...

Joulz il & RTD Present The il Before The Storm

It's been a long-time coming for this one. I've been wanting to put out a project from Joulz il for so long, and with the Month of Jouly upon us, we figured it's only right. I know he's been working on The il Identity, trying to get his name up, and with the success of Offshore Drilling (which included his well-received track, "My Microphone"), its only right to serve the public with a batch of tracks that you should've heard, but might've slept on, as well as some cuts that have not leaked as of yet.

Everything on here is produced by the homegirl Entity Starr (for SwAsHo Productions), and the only feature is from the homey Original Soul. The topics range from warm summer afternoon funk to deeper, more thought-provoking material. Joulz is a gifted MC with endless flows and fresh lyrics - a true mic controller. This is a great compilation, sort of like a prophecy of what's to come from this talented individual; I love being able to hold onto a batch of tracks from an artist that I truly admire, but what I love more is finally being able to play weatherman, and hit you with that stormwatch. Get your umbrellas out, there's a storm brewing...

Joulz Il "Getting It In"

Joulz Il "Getting It In" (prod. by Entity Starr): Over the last couple of weeks, the homey Joulz and I have been speaking more about his future. Dude is a talented MC: whether you define that as with lyrics, flows or just overall appeal - dude has IT. Myself, Joulz and his producer, Entity Starr, are gearing up for a project on RTD: The Il Before The Storm is one of those "allow me to re-introduce myself" albums, hitting you with some joints you should've heard right here on RTD, but will also contain joints that many haven't heard. This is one of those.

I had this on this past Sunday - it was something like 80+ degrees, very sunn, and my son was gone, so I had a chance to speak to Jou and down a 40 and just ENJOY the summer. This track was playing, and I felt like going out and opening a fire hydrant or something, firing up the grill and cookin' the fam some wonderfuls over the charcoal. This is something to rock at your family reunion and cruising in your whip, preferably with the top down. Soak this one up, and keep it locked for The Il Before The Storm, which will be available Summer 2009.

Kid Hum & RTD Present Offshore Drilling

Don't you love when a plan comes together? In looking back over past e-mails, it seems as I first discussed the idea to flip Fossil Fuel into Offshore Drilling with Kid Hum back in December of 2008. Six months, that's a decent turnaround time, no? In that timeframe, I've been thoroughly amazed at how slick the tunes coming in have been... I'm always amazed when an idea comes to fruition. I would like to say this is all my doing - I just played middleman, sowing seeds and contacting heads. I want to shout out EVERYONE who contributed to this project, from Hum being so receptive to the MCs hitting us with some explosive material to the various websites who've helped spread the word on this endeavour. Now you can finally enjoy what I've been waiting to drop on you guys...

I've been telling you about this project for a bit (as has Kid Hum and Fake Shore Drive). Myself and Hum have been trying to secure some ill tracks, using instrumentals from his Fossil Fuel project, and have a dope project to show for it. 2. Whygee "Klonopins"
3. Prezzure "Never Say Never"
4. Sunken State "Gingivitis"

Joulz Il "You'll Remember This"

Joulz Il "You'll Remember This" (prod. by Entity Starr): Here's the second Joulz leak of the day, but not the last you'll be seeing of homeboy on this blog at all. There's a storm brewing - make sure you've secured the fort. Lyrically, Joulz has been a cat that I've known had the skill, but for some reason, YOU keep sleepin'? Why? Who knows. After peepin' this one, you'll remember this... trust.

Joulz Il "Better Days"

Joulz Il "Better Days" (prod. by Entity Starr): Here's a fresh leak from Joulz Il's The Il Identity project. Have you ever dreamt of better days? Saw that light at the end of the tunnel, but felt it was too hard to obtain? This track should be the soundtrack to you striving for those goals. I imagine Joulz bumps this when he dreams of the impact his album will do when it hits the street. South Dallas, stand up!

Joulz Il "It's Over"

Joulz Il "It's Over": Here's a leak from Joulz Il's Il Experiment, which I featured this past Friday. Dude's a great lyricist, and the beats are knockin', so I'm not sure why niggas would even attempt to sleep. I suggest you download this, grab the first Il Experiment pack, and let Joulz know what you think.

The Il Experiment

Check Joulz Il explaining this experiment he and Entity Starr have going on:

Essentially, what they are asking YOU to do is download some free music (sendspace link HERE); then send them some critiques. What do you like/dislike, what do you think would work on an album or what have you. Basically, is this music hot or not? It's a pretty genuine way of doing things - artists looking for honesty from the public.

You can hit up Joulz on twitter, MySpace or send an e-mail to theilexperiment@gmail.com with your honest opinion. It's that simple.

Expect a 2nd interview with Joulz Il INRE this project and other things this South Dallas lyricist has in the pipeline.

Joulz Il "Fuel (My Microphone)" [snippet]

Joulz Il "Fuel (My Microphone)" [snippet]: Here's the first peek into the Offshore Drilling project I'm working on in promoting Kid Hum's Fossil Fuel album. The track heard here is "Fuel", and what you get is a tagged-up snippet of verses 1 & 2 from Dallas, Texas' own Joulz Il. Some fine lyricism over that piano-driven track. Joulz' "Northern Lights" piece in the first verse is what hooked me, instantly. Hopefully this will help light a fire under the cats who are still working on their parts, too!

Bonus Beats Joulz Il vs. T-Pain "Phantom That (rock the dub VIP)": this blend is a direct result of the reasoning behind Entity Starr and Joulz Il remixing "Imagine That". I hope you enjoy!
