Major Lazer ft. Lexx & Santigold "Hold The Line": The last time I remember Diplo & Switch making a big impact, M.I.A. became a household name. This time, they linked up for Major Lazer's Guns Don't Kill People... Lazers Do album, which was created at Tuff Gong, and drops on Downtown Records in June (and features artists like Nina Sky, Mr. Vegas, Amanda Blank, T.O.K. and others). Anything that combines surf guitars, ragga, horse noises and cellphone vibrations is right up my alley. Don't even attempt to sleep.

Bonus Beats Major Lazer "Hold The Line" [instrumental \ acapella]
Noreaga "Married To Marijuana": Here's a nice throwback from the Christmas Pack that Cipha Sounds uploaded last week. Roll a fat dutch, name it "Suzy" and get elevated.

After peepin' this one, you'll remember this... trust.

Last year, there was one of those "freestyle revival" shows out in the Philly area that my wife wanted to go to. Short story short, we never made it, but I made for damn sure that the next time one of those shows came to the area, we were going. I let you guys know last month that Trenton's Sovereign Bank Arena was holding the Wired 96.5 Freestyle Invasion, with a massive number of artists, from TKA, George Lamond and Shannon to David of Nice & Wild, Rockell, Sa-fire and the lovely Debbie Deb, who posed in the picture above with my wife and myself.
If you're not up on Freestyle, you probably don't live on the East Coast, or don't have Latin friends who grew up in the 80s. It's essentially Club music, but with an ill Pop-feel, with a host of good singers adding catchy hooks and lyrics to the infectious beats. While it still thrives in the clubs in my surrounding areas, as well as on the radio, it seems like heads outside of the NJ/NY/Philly areas (as well as spots like Miami) don't really know about it. Those who know, though, come out in DROVES! The Arena was packed last night, with mad Freestyle heads singing every word, dancing up and down the aisles, which I rarely see anymore. True heads really getting into this sound that many might not be into? It was ill, and I'm not the biggest Freestyle fan.
Debbie Deb is a classic example of what Freestyle is about. She started out in 1984 with two club staples: "When I Hear Music" and "Lookout Weekend", but due to the usual label politics and bullshit, she ended up not eating off of her huge tracks like she should've, but almost left the scene entirely. Hearing her last night, you'd think she wouldn't be as on point as she was. Her voice sounds just as good as it does on those classic 45s; just check her performing "When I Hear Music" live last night:
You hear that crowd, singing every word? It was like that for every track! I was looking for my wife after the first intermission, and snapped a pic of Deb, who was meeting and greeting with fans in the lobby; I told her my wife was rockin' during her performance, and she was like "where she at!?" - so my ass, I ran and got her. Snapped the above pic; Deb also said she's got some new music up on her MySpace - I recommend you check it out!
One of the things I wasn't feeling was the sound - in some spots, it felt like there wasn't enough bottom to the bass, it was more mids, like they weren't rockin' with the right amount of sound there. That wasn't the kicker, though - the boy David (of Nice & Wild) fame, he was performing the classic "Diamond Girl", but ran into some issues - mainly the soundguy (or someone) futzing with the sound. I'm not sure what he was going for - the beat slowed down at one point, he had some chick with a guitar our there rockin'; here's the damn-near 9 minute performance, complete with David walking off stage:
He came back on later, and ended up giving a similar performance. Sa-fire also had audio difficulties, but ended up singing acapella, which the crowd loved! The event ended with TKA (complete with corny entrance), but most of the heads were leaving the arena at that point. All-in-all, a fun event, and definitely something my wife loved going to - she danced for the better part of the night, and I just smiled, sippin' on the Henny flask, glad she had a good time.
Jay FULLSTOP V "Flows": Here's some ill shit from across the pond. London's Jay FULLSTOP V has a new mixtape, No Mor, which you can download HERE. Shit is ill - he hits that doubletime flex with ease, and the beats compliment his style very well. He sent me two cuts, and this one got me open EARLY! No time to waste, seen?
J Dilla ft. Black Thought "Reality Check": Talk about waking up on the right side of the bed. I hit up OnSMASH and saw this post about a new (to us) track from Dilla and the homey Black Thought; this is from Jay Stay Paid, a 25-track album, arranged by Pete Rock, of unreleased Dilla cuts featuring cats like DOOM, Raekwon, Illa J, Blu, Havoc, M.O.P. and more, all with Ma Dukes' blessing. I need this.
Via Okayplayer, who also has an exclusive interview with Ma Dukes.
Mistah F.A.B. "Hit Me On Twitter": I'm hoping this is a joke. Twitter is my shit; why do I want to buy a smartphone so I can get a twitter app on my hip?
Via Nah Right.
related David RUSH "Twitter @ Me" \ Icadon "Turn My Twitter On" \ Soulbrotha "Twitter Song"
Redman ft. Icadon & E3 "Please Believe": Here's a 320kbps MP3 of track you probably remember from this past October. Throwing this one out for Redman, who's birthday is today - on a 4/20 weekend!??! You KNOW what time it is!
Speaking of 4/20, Icadon hipped me to the High Times party thats going down on Monday. Smokers, go get involved with this one, please believe!
I don't know about your hood, but my neck of the woods has some beautiful weather poppin' off right now. This should be a nice weekend - lil' man will be with grandmom, Trenton will be invaded by Freestyle legends, and its my wedding anniversary! Let's go!

This one goes out to wifey. I love you - so fortunate...
This weekend in my area is going to be ill. Nice weather (I might crack out the shorts!), good times with the family. Enjoy your time, party people! Next week, I think I'll be compiling all of the playlist tracks into a large .zip file, so you can either grab the whole lot or go to the individual links... holla!
Dallas is one of them niggas I meet on the internets and think "yeah, we'd get along IRL", but for some reason (mostly my lack of leaving my 3-town area), we never link up. We'll make good on it someday, trust.
ANYWAYS, he hooked up with the niggas at HoodHype.com to chat a host of stuff, and it's been recorded!

April 16th, 2009 was Drake's day at Hot 97. Not only was he interviewed by the lovely Angie Martinez (where I found out that this nigga used to be on Degrassi), but he also dropped a sick freestyle for Funkmaster Flex:
Drake also touched down on Cipha Sounds & Rosenberg, which you can hear on today's show. I haven't been following dude's shit, but I got a feeling he's gonna pop off this year... definitely in 2010. His link with Lil' Wayne is gonna help that, but dude has enough star power to do it on his own. Watch out for him.
Sheek Louch ft. Styles P & Bully "Public Enemy #1": When I saw the title of this track, I was hoping it was over the instrumental of one of my favorite Public Enemy tracks. It is. Now, I'm no big Bully fan or anything, but I can rock to this, although I wish Jadakiss was on it. What can you do.
Via Nah Right.
Wifey is already happy with the news of Teena Marie's forthcoming Congo Square, which drops on June 6th. If Teena is on tour again this year, I have to make sure I take wifey to see her. The first single, "Can't Last A Day", features Faith Evans. Your thoughts?
Rhymefest & Crucial Conflict "Mouth": I was going to post a nasty, oral herpes-infested mouth as the pic for this one, but I almost threw up at what Google Images came up with. Luckily, I've never had to deal with a female who had the mouth herpes. These Chi-town cats might have, which prompted them to drop this cut that Andrew unearthed earlier today.
Mayhem "My" (prod. by Grime Tha MC, cuts by DJ Family Tyz): Ask and you shall receive; Beantown's Mayhem hit me with this track earlier today - and I realized I had this in my inbox and neglected it, for no good reason. Is your time guaranteed? Mayhem's is. Don't believe me? Take a listen...

This is the latest episode of the syndicated FuseBox Radio Broadcast with DJ Fusion & Jon Judah for the week of April 15, 2009 with some new and classic Hip-Hop & Soul Music, news and commentary.
This week's commentary focused on the entire mainstream media (MSM) coverage about the Somali pirate scenario, the rise of more extreme right-wing organizations in the U.S. since the election of Pres. Barack Obama (and why in a way, it's a pretty silly scenario on multiple levels in regards to being scared of certain Black People) and some other things here and there.
This week on the show, we had a great interview with Dave Kusek (instructor at Berklee School of Music amongst other accomplishments), the co-author of book "The Future Of Music: Manifesto for the Digital Music Revolution".
Some of the subject matter we touched on during the interview included how technology has totally changed the current state of music industry in the past 10 - 15 years, how hard working independent artists currently have some of the most optimal chances to distribute, promote and sell their music to the masses due to things like internet innovations (Web 2.0, self-distribution options for music & content, etc.), where the current music industry should change to be both profitable and give music to the people they way they want, reaching out for niche audiences (esp. in the different genres of Black Music) and more!
Please check out Mr. Kusek's official site for "The Future Of Music: Manifesto for the Digital Music Revolution" book (which also has lots of great articles about the future of the music industry) at http://futureofmusicbook.com/!
Due to our interview, we did not have new DirectEFX or Black Agenda Report segments this week.
Feel free to check out some archived episodes of the syndicated FuseBox Radio Broadcast here and on on BlackRadioIsBack.com - all of the shows are clean/radio friendly.
