Quite Nyce & Raydar Ellis "Clap"

Quite Nyce & Raydar Ellis "Clap": If you follow this board, you should've already been up on "The Spirit"; Quite & Raydar dropped their Champs vs. The League album back in March of this year, and that spawned them getting loads of rave reviews, as well as working with Geoff Barrow of Portishead! On week 4 of Quite's Hello, My Name Is Quite Nyce mixtape promo, it makes sense to revisit these bangers for those who might not be up on 'em.

Don't forget, the mixtape drops on August 18th, with his Through My Eyes album dropping on the 25th!

A&E "Little Young"

A&E "Little Young" (prod. by M-Phazes): It's funny that this dropped; I was talking to SBK earlier today. He told me I was overusing the term "fail" (which is true), and I told him he was overusing the 90s (I think he had some OC on at the time). How wild is it that Masta Ace and EDO G linked up to form A&E. This track is what you'd expect from two vets - them chanting down all of the "Lil" and "Young" rappers out there. Peep the tracklist for their Arts & Entertainment track, which drops on October 6th:

1.) Hands High (produced by M-Phazes)
2.) A’s &E’s f/Marsha Ambrosious (produced by Baby Dooks)
3.) Fans f/Large professor produced by (DJ Supreme One)
4.) Little Young produced by (M-Phazes)
5.) Ei8ht Is Enough (produced by Frank Dukes)
6.) Good Music f/Posdnus of De La Soul (produced by DJ Spinna)
7.) Pass The Mic f/KRS-One (Produced by Double-O)
8.) Reminds Me (produced by DJ Supreme One)
9.) Rounds And Round f/DOITALL of Lords Of The Underground (Produced by DJ Supreme One)
10.) Over There (produced by M-Phazes)
11.) Here I Go f/Jamelle Bundy (produced by Rain)
12.) Dancing Like A W.G. f/Chester French & Pav Bundy (produced by Pav Bundy

I've got a feeling this is going to be a sick one.

My boy Joulz il has been frustrated... he won't talk to me about it in depth, but I know he has. We put out The il Before The Storm, and it seems like its been lost in the shuffle for whatever reason. I try to not dwell on things that didn't go my way, just like I don't like over-hyping my triumphs, but I think some of the words from this post migth be echo'd in the convos of many an MC in 2009:

For me, it always seems as if Hip Hop comes with the jagged pill of reality for you, if you don't have a huge following or if you don't have the money to really get your thoughts out to the masses. Its almost a daily struggle not to get jaded when I know for a fact that I really don't have the resources to get the music out to the people that I would like to have it. That's really the most frustrating part of it all. With all the new mediums of putting music out and all the millions and millions of DIY emcees, Im starting to feel like Im getting lost in the shuffle. This is a discouraging notion. How do you continue to do what it is that you love when what it is that you love doesn't love you? Even typing that, I had to laugh. The greatest exercise in futility for me is being an emcee who has something to say, has the ability to say it, but yet has no one who will listen to what he is saying. I often wonder if I should just go to the microphone one day and just spew out the most unintelligible and non-tangible gibberish and then immediately put it online and pub it as the greatest song ever. Send it to the djs and press them to play it. Submit it to every blog and hope that they post it up. What if THAT'S the song that people start to pay attention to me by? How would I feel? Would I be able to live with that? Honestly, I cant say that I would.

It's a tricky situation these days, and I honestly feel bad for talented individuals who can't get their spit out, or get their bars heard. Dumb fans need teaching? I don't know. I'm trying to figure it all out myself...

Shit I Can't Find

Nothing pains me more than not being able to find certain things. I end up hooking people up a lot - but the shit I want, I end up using my patience and waiting a looooooooooooooooooong time for what I am looking for to surface. For example:

Can someone help me find an MP3 of the Offbeat: Red Hot Remixes EP? I had a friend who owned this vinyl; it includes a Seba + Lotek remix of "Krazy Groove", but the real joint I want is DJ Spooky's "Lulu's Peace Mix" of DJ Krush's "Ryu-ki". The Offbeat compilation from the Red+Hot organization was the shit, and I remember loving this mix... like 12 years ago. Trying to find the MP3 (legally and illegally) has been a big FAIL, and it looks like I'll have to hunt down the vinyl, cop a device to convert to MP3 and do the damn thing.

I have no problem buying shit. And Bret Hart was probably my favorite wrestler until the nWo surfaced in the WCW. I've been getting into eBooks, but for some reason, I can't find a normal .pdf of his Hitman: My Real Life In The Cartoon World Of Wrestling. I can find .ePub files, .mobi and other shits that involve me downloading some other reader - this is before we even break down the asinine prices for these purchases. Anyone know where I can score a normal PDF of this?

If ANYONE can help me out, hit me at

Vast Aire ft. Genesis "Battle Of The Planets": So apparently the Def Jukies (past and present) have been going at each other via blog posts, and keep bringing up Camu Tao (RIP). Two things:

  1. Let the nigga rest in peace. No reason to keep bringing up the man's name - he can't defend himself and his thoughts on any of this at this point.
  2. You'd think that Camu passing would've brought about some kind of conversation, hoping to repair the rifts that have plagued this crew (Def Jux/Weathermen) over the years.
I had no idea Cage made any comments on Vast Aire until I saw this post on 2DBz, but Elucid hipped me to this MySpace blog post from Vast Aire, where he airs his grievances during his tenure at Def Jux and with the Weathermen.

EDIT El-P has spoken on the beef - as he said he will not be keeping the MySpace blog up for long, I'll copy and paste the info here:

Monday, August 10, 2009

i have never wanted to participate in any sort of public ugliness with people i once considered friends. its negative and builds nothing. its only purpose is to hurt. its a shallow action. a desperate attempt to satisfy the ugliest parts of your ego. there is no example of me disparaging, insulting, blaming, defaming or casting doubt on anyones character who i've had any type of real love for and considered crew at one point no matter how things may have turned out... no matter what they may say about me or what i may think about them behind the scenes. for me, i always thought it made one look small and angry. i always felt like that type of public ranting and vitriol reflected failure, weakness, insecurity and pettiness and i've seriously regretted it when i've been involved in anything that resembles that, even peripherally. as good as it feels in the moment it almost always backfires. the same person who (non artistically) desperately seeks public affirmation of his anger and resentment ends up actually hurting himself more in the eyes of the strangers he's trying to communicate with. by the same token, defending yourself against that type of attack plays right in to the whole thing and immediately puts you on the same level as the person attacking you. beyond that the fact is that for me, the relationships that i've had in my life that have fallen apart make me sad, not angry. the friendships that have ended in my life are a source of huge regret for me and i constantly wonder if there was something i could have done to change the outcome. so i don't have it in me to kick and scream and curse the world for not handing me everything i think i deserve. i'll do that in my music, if need be. its better that way. that much i have learned.

I'm also not the type of person who feels like he's a victim of circumstance. every choice made along the line has different results. it seems irrational and immature to me to create a world in ones head in which somehow, magically, there is an external reason that justifies every single reality of your life... and not one of those reasons is you. a world in which you are just in every action and innocent in every interaction. a life in which you only consider and retain the ideas that justify your perspective and completely ignore all other realities that exist and might, if you took a moment to consider them, make any (rational) person think a little longer before they lashed out and tried to destroy some one else's character.

it takes a special type of ego to literally delude oneself in to thinking that you have the moral right of way in every scenario. it takes clinical insanity to think things are one way when in fact they are the opposite. for instance:

lets say (as a metaphor, of course) someone was morbidly obese but thought he was a ninja. that would be kind of crazy, wouldn't it? or if that morbidly obese person didn't make the connection between his eating habits and his weight. crazy. now if that same massively, morbidly obese person walked around calling people who were less than half his weight "fat", how should they react? on the one hand its obviously crazy for this hugely fat man to be calling you fat. but on the other hand he keeps fucking saying it. over and over. to anyone who will listen.

i've tried to ignore it. i've tried to squash it. i've tried to take the high road because i assumed that like me, everyone must have better things to occupy their time with. apparently not. every other day there is a new vitriolic rant aimed at dismantling me or someone i care about, despite the fact that i haven't fired one single shot in the direction they are coming from. not one.

now i don't have any interest in trying to make anyone see things the way i see them or arguing about/defending the past. i wont do the back and forth point by point defense with someone whos only path to generate any type of publicity for himself seems to be exactly that type of public argument. a person who literally is interviewing himself in order to push a smear campaign forward. a man who has made it his personal mission in life to focus all his energy on the very people who were close to the friend he claims to have loved with a constant barrage of misspelled and badly punctuated lies, insults, accusations, epithets, slander and threats. someone who seemingly has no humility or perspective on his own fallibility. someone whos anger has driven him to the edge of sanity. whos own life is seemingly so joyless and directionless that the only thing he can think to do is reach out and try and inflict pain.

and by the way, when i say "close to the friend he claims to have loved" i mean close. I'm talking that our lives will never be the same close. the real deal. the kind that comes with pain no one wants and that no one with a soul would brag about as though it were a credibility issue or as though love were something you had to prove as opposed to just feel. not the idea constructed to make you feel good about yourself or justify your perspective in the eyes of other people or yourself. friendship isn't the collective little favors you've done for someone that you keep record of and hold against them even after they die. its not a song you may have recorded with someone years ago and its not a conversation you may have had. its bigger than that.

its sad to me that you, and you know who you are, don't understand that. its painful to sit here and take your abuse knowing the true nature of your character and how utterly easy it would be to expose it. the temptation to publish certain correspondences you've been a part of is overwhelming. i have no doubt in my mind that any one who would see those would walk away from reading them with a very different perspective on your moral fiber and your character in general. a younger me would do it in a heartbeat. and yet what good would come out of it? what are we all trying to prove to each other? it would only lead to even more ranting, more insults and more bullshit. no one would learn a thing and i would have wasted another minute of my life.

and i don't hate you. i don't want to hurt or destroy you. you were my friend. i wanted you to succeed. now i just find you to be a sad character. twisted, angry and resentful and squandering your time on mean spirited pursuits. its depressing.

now i'm sure the person i'm writing this all about will just respond in his usual manner after reading this. denial, anger, threats, capital letters, misused question marks and exclamation points and more accusations. but i've got a suggestion for a better way to proceed... just let it go. you've gotten your rocks off. you've said your peace. now make some music. stop lecturing the world and contribute while you still have time. none of this shit means anything. at all. go make the art you believe in and spend not one more second trying to take other people down or blaming people for the place you find yourself in life. spend time with and cherish the people you love while they are still alive so you dont find yourself feeling like you have to defend the validity of your commitment to them after they're gone. be grateful for the things you have and wish no man harm. be happy or die trying. i know i will.

by the way if you truly did love Camu and were close to him then I'm sure you feel the same pain my friends and i do. if that really is the case then I'm sure the futility of arguing and fighting with people has never been more obvious to you. it is to me.

if you loved him then you are one of us... the heartbroken members of a club we never wanted to join... and I'm sorry for your loss.

ps: im not going to be approving comments about this blog. i didn't write it to rally people against anyone or to create "sides".

pps: this is the only thing i have to say and i wont engage in any more and i wont be leaving this blog up for long.

Jay-Z and Oprah?

Word via RapRadar is that Jay-Z and Oprah have been spotted on the street. Obviously one wonders - are they filming for a Jay-themed episode of Oprah? With his confirmed status as first musical guest on Jay Leno's new show, and BP3 dropping September 11th of this year, I can only imagine that this will be the case. So many questions come up...

  • Will the entire hour be dedicated to him?
  • Will Oprah go in on Jay, like she has on the (few) Hip-Hop stars who have graced her stage prior to Jay?
  • How open with Hova been in regards to Beyonce and his personal life in general?
  • Will Bleek be allowed anywhere near the set?
OK, that last one is a joke. It's just a bigger deal than I think a lot of you would like to believe. Its not happened yet (much to the chagrin of my wife), but Oprah has her own channel coming in 2010. She's a true icon in entertainment, and to many of the older community, this will solidify Jay-Z as "that dude".

Or he's finally hit the right button to help get more units of BP3 sold. I don't know. Cipha Sounds said on Juan Epstein a while that Jay-Z doesn't do anything small - he wouldn't do anything on MTV2 because he "don't do nothing 2". You imagine there was some kind of backroom bargaining on what they'd do, how Jay-centric shit would be, and what WOULDN'T be discussed.

Who knows. Dude's been on a tear since "D.O.A." premiered, and we won't be hearing the last of duke and BP3 anytime soon. It's only the beginning of August... :shiver:.

EDIT Here's some audio of Oprah speaking to Gayle King about meeting Jay, via PDS by RapRadar. Odd hearing Gayle talking about loving his lyrics and beat. Oprah sounds smitten ROFL. Word is this is for O Magazine? Fail?

Polow Da Don "Dancing Machine (Remix)"

Polow Da Don "Dancing Machine (Remix)": I'm gonna just go out and say it - fuckery like this is very unnecessary. If you can do a remix of a classic and improve on it, that's great - let's get it. But if your remix is just updating a classic for the sake of you getting hits, and making it putrid in the end? Fuck your life, and burn down your studio.

EDIT Looks like Universal greenlit a Michael Jackson: Remix Suite 1, with cats like The Neptunes, Dallas Austin, Salaam Remi (who's dubstep track did he jack now?) and Stargate flippin' MJ remixes alongside the above Polow one. What say you?

RTD Presents Summer Sweat 2009

Remember in the '90s, when you used to "sweat" a lot of stuff, from shorty with the ill Nautican jacket to those crisp Air Jordans? I sweat music the same way, be it the corniest of the corny or the duttiest of the dutty.

Let me back up... the other day, my wife made plans for us to go to the Jersey Shore tonight with a friend of hers, and I figured "let's make a CD". I knew I had to include Eminem's "The Warning", b/c homegirl is a big Em fan. Now, we keep it fair and balanced (no Fox News) over here, so of course I had to throw in the "Obsessed" remix with Gucci Mane on it. As I was trying to piecemeal a tracklist for the hour-plus drive, I figured "why not throw in a bunch of tracks that I've messed with over this summer"and ish came together. Some of the inclusions are just ignant ("Gimme $20"), as I usually have one ignant Rap song that I play back-to-back over the summer (remember the Iconz' "Get Fucked Up"?). Others are straight undeniable jawns from the past few months ("Romping Shop", Mario's "Break Up", Drake's "Best I Ever Had"), which are also a testament to my increased listening to Hot 97 (big up to Nobex). Hell, I even included an interlude from the Hot 97 Morning Show with Cipha Sounds & Rosenberg! All of these tracks have gotten some play from me since the unofficial start of summer, and will likely be the tracks I remember from the Summer of '09. Check it out.

01/Mariah Carey ft. Gucci Mane "Obsessed (Remix)"
02/Verse Simmonds ft. Yung Joc "Buy You A Round"
03/Mario ft. Gucci Mane & Sean Garrett "Break Up"
04/Trey Songz "I Need A Girl"
05/Cassie ft. Diddy "Must Be Love"
06/Amerie ft. Rick Ross, Cain, Jadakiss & Nas "Why R U (Remix)"
07/Vybz Kartel ft. Spice "Romping Shop"
08/Jamie Foxx ft. T-Pain "Blame It (Ted Smooth Remix)"
09/Rick Ross The Boss: Brain Buster (interlude)
10/DJ Class ft. Kanye West "I'm The Shit (Remix)"
11/N.O.R.E. ft. Nina Sky "Shoulders Move"
12/Eve "Me N My (Up In Da Club)"
13/Cam'ron "Spend The Night"
14/Tea Bag Boys ft. Ron Browz & Red Cafe "Gimme $20"
15/Drake "Best I Ever Had"
16/Young Money "Every Girl"
17/50 Cent "Touch Me"
18/Eminem "The Warning"
19/Eminem & Mr. Porter "Chonkyfire Freestyle (Live On Westwood)" (Bonus Track)

Come on, a trip to the Jersey Shore in 2009 and NOT including Cam's DJ Kaycee-biting "Spend The Night"? Pure blasphemy. These are the songs that will have me thinking about my first BlackBerry, or the humid nights in Jersey. Or my early mornings in my cubicle, streaming Hot 9-7. This is (a part of) my Summer of 2009 soundtrack, for good or ill.

Like Meka and FWMJ, it took me a bit to get into this track. I'm still not blown away by it, lyrically, but its got a dope vibe for cool days like today.

Spec Boogie "Time Of My Life"

Spec Boogie "Time Of My Life": While the e-mail this track came in on speaks on Spec's ADD, he actually has two projects dropping this month. "Time Of My Life" is from the first, where he raps over MeLo-X's Maxwell Blacksummers'night remix EP (Spec was so intrigued when he peeped two tracks off of it that he decided to just go in over the whole EP) - this project drops next Tuesday. His work on this, and other projects (*cough*LESSONDARYALBUM*cough*) delayed the Summer Movie Season tape, but he said this will be dropping on August 26th. If you wanna see Spec rip it up live, check him out at Brooklyn Bodega's show on August 28th.

Aubrey O'Day "Party All The Time" (mirror): What's worse than Eddie Murphy and Rick James making dance tracks about their girl partying all the time? Former-Danity Kane slore Aubrey O'Day remaking it. Why this showed up on Paul Heyman's blog is beyond me. Enjoy this epic FAIL on a Friday morning.

RIP John Hughes

I just heard that John Hughes passed away from a heart attack earlier today. If you're younger than a certain age, you might not be up on shit like The Breakfast Club, Weird Science, Ferris Bueller's Day Off, Some Kind Of Wonderful and the mighty Sixteen Candles, but I grew up with a lot of kids who patterned their lives after characters of those movies. I can't count how many times I watched flicks like Uncle Buck, Home Alone, Dutch and Curly Sue on HBO. Damn.

Dude's a legend in 80's movies. National Lampoon's Vacation?!!? Come on! I fully expect to see John Hughes marathons over the weekend. VH1? HBO? Get on it!

EDIT Here's an ill drop about a woman who became pen pals with John Hughes in the late 80s.
