Von Pea ft. Che Grand & Elucid "Thanks For Your Children": I won't say that I've heard Pea's Gotta Have It, but I do know that in the grand scheme of the picture that Von painted, this track smacks you in the face like a buck fifty. Che Grizzly and Gutta come fresh off of The Fixtape 2 and the "Pandemonium" single, respectively, to add a splash of p-noid funk to the mix. This might be one of the albums of the year. Or maybe I'm just bugging. Trust, though, this track is constructed like the golden age of Hip-Hop - in your face, creative and real.
Pea's Gotta Have It drops on October 12th.

Jon Connor "The Message" (prod. by Optiks): Here's another cut from Flint, Michigan's own Jon Connor, who I'm glad that Young Sav from Best of Both Offices put me onto. This beat has that throwback steelo (love that break), and dude attacks the beat precisely. No bullshit, just jewels woven lovely throughout this track. Vinnie Chase Season One is due out soon!
BBE is dropping Pugs' new album, The Decade, on October 26th. It's a compilation of tracks he's done over the last 10 years, so the title is perfect and its guaranteed dope. If you're not up on Pugs, you need to grab this and get an idea of the fire he's been putting out for the last 10 years, seen?
The wait's over - Rickie Jacobs' Air Jacobs, which is presented by BuckMarleyXXX and Tha Good Life Reviews, is here, and it's been WELL worth the weight. I first got tuned into Rickie due to his production, but over the last year or so his skills on the mic have been the highlight, and they take center stage over beats from Artic, The Awesome Sound, MarsZ and more, with guest MCs like Wordsmith, 2 Pistols and others adding but never overshadowing Rickie's steelo. Have I ever steered you wrong? No? Then hop in your Delorean and take a trip into Rickie's zone.

Wordsmith's In-House Producer Strada debuts his first "Making the Beat" mini series that will focus on his personal beat making process for numerous projects. In this behind the scenes video watch how Strada pieces together Word's radio single, "Touch Backdown" Feat. Jnes off of his Buzzworthy Bangers Vol. 1 EPixtape Dropping November 2nd.
Featuring Doughboy & OMG:
P.SO "Some Fun": Suicide By Jellyfish recently dropped, but the Earth Tone King already has another project, More Jelly, lined up. This will be a sequel, but there's likkle info on it currently. This is a dope track - love the sample(s) utilized... has a nice bop to it.
Redman "Fly" (prod. by Illmind): Gotta rep for the Gilla House general, Redman. This is the street single from Reggie, Red's next album, and it's definitely a big-body beat. Not sure how I feel about the random auto-tuning in here, but he still knows how to throw down some sick lyrics. Gotta respect.
Via Nah Right.
Out today on iQ Entertainment is the first official single from CapricornOne, aka Elucid and El Carnicero. Been a long time coming for this release from this outfit, so I'm glad you guys can grab "Pandemonium" (alongside remixes from SDUK + haDJi).

To help celebrate turning 20, Ninja Tune not only released Ninja Tune XX, but today Coldcut gave away their seminal Journeys By DJ mix, which at the time (read: the mid 90s) blew away anything you could consider a "mixtape". It did exactly what it said on the tin - it was a MAD journey of a DJ excursion, crossing genres and opening a lot of minds. This version of the mix is taken from the 2002 re-issue...

Quest M.C.O.D.Y. "Nothing" (prod. by Manchyld): I had no idea Quest was doing #MCODYmonday leaks; here's a year-old track that was recorded in Florida. Rumor is Man and Quest might be doing an EP together? Keep it locked on Quest's blog for that - and a MAJOR announcement!
MiLKMEN & Dutch New York "Black & Yellow (Remix)": Frequent collaborators Dutch NY and the MiLKS have a new project, Vanilla Dutch, on the way. This mixtape has some pretty good potential, considering the lyrical acumen of all parties involved. This is a dope party starter right here - throw this one on if everyone is playing the wall, watch how quickly cats jump on the floor!
Curly Castro "West Indian Rum" (prod. by Margel Overton): Some fresh shit to mek yeh wine up yeh waist, seen? Sela's own Margel Overton cooked up a bass-heavy, futuristic dancehall flavors, with a hint of that rum in the mix. Word is he will be performing this live on the 24th of September at the Hidden House in Phoenix. More info at Clap Cowards.
Sean J "Unstoppable" (prod. by Soy): You would think these two didn't just drop a mixtape! Those FTG boys go in for the first track/lead single from J's The Ego Egg mixtape, which is dropping through Domination in three to four weeks. Perfect introduction if you're not up on either - be on the lookout for the video, too!
King Mez "How I'm Feelin'": Mez recently lost his mother, and snaps up a Drake instrumental to let some shit off his chest. I haven't heard a grip of material from the spitter, but the more I DO hear, the more I realize that dude's a beast. Hopefully we get some fresh material soonlike...
Indiana Rome "Bye Bye": Ill trunk rattler from the nigga Rome's forthcoming Who The Hell Left The Gate Open project. While it's called "Bye Bye", this is the sound of Rome kicking the door open, asking no questions... and just eating everything on your plate. Own that.
QuESt "The Samba Thelonious Theory" (prod. by Thelonius): Nothing like a dope MC going the extra mile over a sick beat. He really toys with how this beat flows, then goes above and beyond - you might need to keep your hand on the rewind button to run back some of these lines. This single is taken from Q's The Reason: A Defense Mechanism, which drops on November 23rd. He's asking if this should or shouldn't make the album - if this doesn't make the album, niggas is retarded, straight up. Fire track.
Gyptian "Hold Yuh (Shy FX & Benny Page Remix) [radio rip]": I know, I know - I've talked a lot of shit on the original "Hold Yuh", but I can't help it. Ever since Hot 97 picked up on it earlier this summer, some version of it has played on morning radio. Especially when Nicki Minaj jumped on it - it was dwindling, then got thrown back in like it just came out - Cipha Sounds used to do mixes of like 3 or 4 different versions, including blends with whatever popular Drake tune was out over it! However, DSB's own Shy FX and Benny Page cooked up a DnB remix in their style, and I can rock to this. They know how to transfer that dancehall energy inna DnB meltdown. Drops nasty, and might make me listen to Gyptian "get butterflies" throughout the Fall...

Without his knowledge, Tom Chase's The Traveler EP has been leaked on the Internets. From what I hear, someone was mad about something regarding this project. I don't know, I just peep shit that's on your Interneticals and put it on my blog. iPod stay on charge. and Deal - The Villain and Daniel Joseph guest feature on this worldwide experimentational, actual factual international smashin' you. Shit's dope, but it's EA (who will be in NY on September 27th), so you already know what the shit that is.

That B Traits, she's an elusive character. Shy FX snagged her and threw her under his wing in his Digital Soundboy camp. She's Canadian, is a talented DJ, but hasn't dropped any tunes yet. I've been trying to interview her for Dogs On Acid, but we'll probably have to wait for that. This mix for Annie Nightingale dropped a few days ago, and is a special Digital Soundboy Showcase, featuring cuts like "Raver", "Speechless" and a big batch of tunes from heads like Benga, Breakage, Kutz, Skream, Benny Page, Fresh and Shy himself. Love this!

Cy Yung "Waiting" (prod. by J. Slikk): Time for a lil' exclusive from the BPA camp, who somehow got a spark and are lining things up for the remainder of 2010. They recently dropped that Gloria Celemente mixtape, and now we get this fresh throwback sounding jam from Slikk and Cy. Speaking to Slikk earlier this evening, he says that you can expect something new from the BPA crew every Friday, nahmean? Soul Train Dancer is set to drop in October, on the 12th of October, AKA the 5th anniversary of the first ever BPA album (Foreign Currency 1), with Foreign Currency 2 looking to drop in December. Slikk has an untitled EP ready to go in November, and I'm still waiting for ROE to sort out his mixtape. But enough of all that, love this backpackin' jam right here.
Here's a grip of (mostly) new material from the boy Mario Dones and the one like AV. This is done by design, showcasing whatagwanzon with these two, over beats by Keelay & Zaire, DJ Whooligan and more, with features from Kam Moye, Slo-Mo and all. Enjoy that. Take it and put it in your pocket. Or, on the iPod in your pocket. Love that.

Ninja Tune turns 20 years old this year, and I feel like I need to represent. back when I was really trying to figure out what the fuck I was into, musically, Ninja Tune had this ill combination - DIY culture mixed with Jazz samples thrown against Hip-Hop/DJ culture with a proper amount of abstract nuttiness thrown in for good measure. Cats like The Herbaliser, Coldcut, DJ Food, The Cinematic Orchestra, Luke Vibert, Mr. Scruff and plenty more had releases and albums that were the soundtrack(s) to my high school years. For this special edition of Solid Steel, DK mixes up a grip of Ninja's finest, and we get a special interview with Coldcut themselves!
Pop Matters got the exclusive on this Mini-Mix of Roots Manuva and Wrongtom's Duppy Writer album, which is one of my favorites from 2010: "British rapper Roots Manuva hooks up with producer Wrong Tom for a collection of remixes of tracks from previous Manuva albums. They play about with the titles as well as the music (full track list is listed after the jump). The album, Duppy Writer, released on 6 September in the UK and is coming out 21 September in the US via Big Dada. The label has released this mini-mix sampler for the album to whet your appetite. Heavy on the dub, Duppy Writer features a new tune from Roots Manuva and Ricky Ranking called “Jah Warriors” among all the re-imagined songs".

"The Art Of Ritchmixing: A K. Sparks Adventure" is the epic tale of one mans journey (Ritchcraft's Journey) from remix mediocrity to remix supremacy. K. Sparks helps lead Ritchcraft to the promised land of remix supremacy with the countless acapella's he has so generously bestowed upon young Ritchcraft.

Action Figures "You" (prod. by Knowledge): The Action Figures supergroup consists of UllNevaNo and J-Berd on the mic, with Knowledge and DJ Minus Nine on the boards. This is a leftover from their Fresh Out The Box release, but they have a new album on the way. Shit sounds like a bunch of superheroes flying over an urban metropolis, fighting crime and shit.
Palms Out Sounds has recently put out Udachi's "Swagger", and got trigger happy... they gave away the instrumental, the Baobinga remix AND this 32 minute mixtape, which is perfect for your Friday follies: "The first proper release on Palms Out from long time cohort, Udachi, "Swagger" features the stylings of fellow Staten Islander, iBeat. It's a charged tropical joyride through new york heavy bass hop, kuduro and rave. An impeccable remix package is started off by the UK's Baobinga, who gives the original a purple synth tinged juke dicing, full of 808 bottom and tom tom galore. Kansas City's Tactic turn in an ultra modern dembow remix, while Trouble & Bass's own AC Slater delivers a heavy bass stomper for the ages. Not one to get lost in the mix, Sweden's Andreas Bygdell (1/4 of The Touch) delivers a sexy saxophone based bumpy house version, with the the naughtiest breakdown imaginable. Last up, Johnny Love aka. Deathface formerly of Guns n Bombs, takes us out with a bang - a monstrous, dark dubstep version. Also incl! uded is an instrumental version. Original Crumb inspired artwork by John Dessereau".

Jon Connor "Epic": When I saw the name, I immediately saw a cyborg with half of it's face ripped off, with a shottie in its hand. This cat from Flint, MI flow crazy. Seriously. I didn't know what to expect, honestly, but he coasts over, under, inside, into this beat. And isn't just jibber-jabbering - he's got some shit to say. This is taken from his forthcoming mixtape, Jon Connor as Vinnie Chase Season 1, and he's co-signed by the BoBO crew, so give it a spin!
This episode emphasizes why I like John Cena: when they call dude the face of the WWE, it's not bullshit. He's a charmer, but he's also real. He speaks his mind and isn't afraid of explaining why he fucks with the company on a business level; he's also funny and a Hip-Hop head. You hear how they recorded a grip of bits for the morning show, and get to chat with Cena about a bunch of other things, including Legendary, his latest film.
DOWNLOAD Juan Epstein (9/16/2010) [via Rosenberg Radio]
YC The Cynic "Satriani" (prod. by Ron Solero): YC massacres this live-leanin' jam from Ron Solero for DJ Booth, and showcases what I've known - the future is the truth. Word is dude has a full length project, The Spectacle, on the way, so while we wait for that, sink all your adult teeth into this one.
I remember when MTV would show SQUiRT TV, Jake Fogelnest's proper introduction into the popular culture. I'd spend late Sunday nights watching this guy talking shit, interviewing artists and having them play in his bedroom on TV! I was a fan, and it's been great to see him branch off into radio and TV, among other things. The Hype Men pulled him in for Episode 4. Enjoy.

Nucci Reyo ft. Wordsmith & DJ Yckor "Never Had Nothing" (prod. by Blunt): Nice to see two MCs who do the damn thing link up for something positive. This is taken from In Due Season, which I'm sure I don't know when it drops, but these two stay on the grind, so we can only hope they link up more times that this, you feel me?
They might have pulled the plug on the release date of Soul Train Dancer, but Cy and Slikk still wanted to unleash some shit you definitely slept on. Makes sense... gotta know where niggas came from to chart where they're going, seen? So cool out to this, and hope that Rosie Perez drops... eventually. BPA!

Like three or so years ago, I was just an assistant editor over at Dogs On Acid. One of my first pieces was working on an article for Primetime Records, and one of my main points of contact was Contour, who was sorting things out before he had to take a break from everything. Oddly enough, I had no idea that that DnB artist was actually the latest dubstep phenom, 501. Last week, he dropped a hectic guest mix for MistaJam's show, and I'm glad I'm able to drop this on you guys today. Some tough riddims on here, trust. You see a release form 501, grab it. Love how he blends really great melodies with some sick basslines. That's all I need, you know?
Fresh mixtape from Dregs and Equipto out of San Francisco. If you fuck with that Left Coast chill, this should be right up your alley. Might wanna roll up something sticky in a zig zag, cuff your khakis and vibe to this one. The mixtape is blended by DJ Beatsme and features nothing but original beats.

Vasco "You Already Know": Truth be told, I'm not a fan of the hook, but I rock to this. Nothing that you really need to sink your teeth into, just some infectious shit to bounce to. This is taken from Vasco's ZzzZz...(late nite tv) mixtape, which drops on September 20th.
After 'nuff waiting, junclassic (alongside Classified Recordings, HipHopGame, Kevin Nottingham and RTD) drops his Nas ode, Mornings Was Has Browns, which is mixed by the homey DJ Tre Unda. If you've followed Jun at all, you know many of these tunes, but if you've only heard about dude, and wanted a nice primer on the shit he's been crackin' out over the years, pick this one up.

This podcast happens to be the last podcast from DJ Cable... for 2010. Dude's too popular, has no time to devote to these like he wants to... which I can't blame him for. I've been hearing the shit he has in the pipeline, and its sick - you WON'T be disappointed! And you won't be disappointed with this mix, which flips a bunch of the hottest heat from last month.
TheSeKondElement ft. Heata Best "Who You Know" (prod. by Dubb): New SeKondEl, from her forthcoming Metrical Komposition project. Lovin' the beat hear, sounds like a Pink Panther interpolation, with homegirl just letting you know why she's so ill. Super smooth shit, kind of leftfield but that's how we does it, nadamean?!?!
Killa Kyleon & Marcus Manchild "Cell Therapy": Kyleon has been dismantling numerous instrumentals lately, but it's been a MINUTE since I've heard this "Cell Therapy" instrumental! Linking up with Manchild, these two just go in... serious style.
El Da Sensei's new album with The Returners, GT2: Nu World, drops on October 12th and features Sean Price, Treach, Akrobatik and many more. Check the tracklist, and enjoy the free download for "Nu World"
"Here are my latest works designed to damage the muscles in your neck. Billy Ocean's 1984 album, Suddenly, had gems such as Caribbean Queen and Mystery Lady. Those tracks initially drew me to flip and chop the living sh*t out of this LP. This time around I even remixed Mos Def's Priority (from the Ecstatic album) over one of these Billy Ocean slappers and the outcome....well, let's just say its what made Billy utter the words "This sh*t is bananas!""
