The Observation Deck (2nd Nov. 2007)

  • Dog the Bounty Hunter calls his son's girlfriend a nigger, on a private phone call that the National Enquirer got a copy of. Everyone is crying foul/fail, as if niggas really give a fuck about Dog the Bounty Hunter; A&E was smart enough to suspend that dude, early.
  • Martina Hingis retired recently, under suspicion of cocaine abuse. The funny this is a statement she made about cocaine causing a euphoric state, and that she didn't think she'd be playing tennis in that state - but on the day she tested positive, she lost a match!
  • It's official: Don Imus is back on the radiowaves come December 3rd. You gotta love how this prick can be allowed back on the radio, but people threaten to sue Nas over calling his album Nigger. Sick, sad world. Maybe Nas should call his shit Cracker or Honky, and it would be no problem.
  • Do we really need a new Knight Rider TV-movie and/or remake?
  • The iPhone has been named "Invention Of The Year" by Time. What's so innovative about it, exactly? There's been PDAs and touch-screen tech out there...
  • Barry Bonds says that if they put an asterisk on his homerun streak-breaking ball, he will boycott any Hall of Fame induction. That's a great stance, but it's kind of jinxing himself, because I doubt Cooperstown gives a shit, and is probably more likely to just outright snub Bonds on induction.
  • You gotta love how Joe Torre chunked the deuce to the Yankees, and on the same day they got their new manager, he announced being signed to the Dodgers.

Ice cold out there.

got a few bits that I actually listened to/liked this week:

01/Nas ft. Bravehearts "Zone Out" [sorry, I love the beat on this one.]
02/Jay-Z ft. Nas "Success" [4 words: LET THAT BITCH BREATHE!]
03/Crime Mob ft. Lil' Scrappy Vs. Kion "Knuck If You Buck (DJ Nappy THUGSTEP Refix)" [you know what it is.]
04/Kjell "Cloud Thirty" [how does Colours Audio only have 3 releases out and own most other DnB labels out there?]
05/5 Deez "Late October" [just love the vibes on this one; the chorus, if you can call it that, always gets me going]

you skurred of the leak?

The Juggaknots' DJ Boo compiled a mixtape for Def Jux for the recent Halloween holiday entitled Halloween Candy Before Dinner. It's a bunch of new/recently released Definitive Jux cuts from El-P, Aesop Rock, Junk Science, Hangar 18 and Rob Sonic. Here's the tracklisting:

Aesop Rock, 'Citronella'
El-P, 'Smithereens'
Rob Sonic, 'Rock The Convoy'
Junk Science,'Do It Easy'
Hangar 18, 'West Wing'
Rob Sonic, 'Dead As Disco'
Junk Science, 'Hey!'
Hangar 18, 'Bakin' Soda'
Junk Science, 'Jerry McGuire'
Hangar 18, 'Thing Big'
Rob Sonic, 'Fat Man & Little Boy'
El-P, 'Flyentology'
Aesop Rock. 'None Shall Pass'

High Rankin, who normally produces DnB, has dropped a Dubstep mix for the Halloween crew and Drumz of The South. I haven't given a listen as of yet, but word is that this is "scary". Check it out:

1: High Rankin - We're all dead
2: High Rankin - Escape from the hood
3: High Rankin - Glory to the grave
4: High Rankin - Control room
5: High Rankin - Fire sale
6: High Rankin - Cop killa
7: High Rankin - Bohemian grove
8: High Rankin - What's your user (Dubstepz remix)

There's a few mixtapes out there for you heads: Ransom has dropped his Ransom Note mixtape, and I think Joe Budden is right: that whole "beef" looks kind of suspect. Lil' Wayne's new mixtape is out as well, entitled The Leak (more mirrors @ Different Kitchen). I don't think this Leak is the same as THIS Leak, but oh well.

Sammy Bananas has dropped a promo mix entitled High Top Fades, which takes it back to the '90s Hip-Hop/R&B favs that got mad dancefloors hype. Check it out:

Kid N' Play - Energy
Kwame - Ownlee Eue
Digital Underground - Kiss You Back
De La Soul - A Roller Skating Jam Named "Saturdays"
Black Sheep - Strobelite Honey
Big Daddy Kane - Warm It Up, Kane
Steady B - Nasty Girls
MC Brains - Oochie Coochie
Sagat - Funk Dat
–Commercial Break–
Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince - Summertime
Paperboy - Ditty
Del - Mistadobalina
Nice & Smooth - Funky For You
A Tribe Called Quest - Scenario (Remix)
Ini Kamoze - Here Comes The hotstepper
L.L. Cool J - Around The Way Girl
Jade - Don't Walk Away Boy
Brand Nubian - Drop The Bomb
Positive K - I Got A Man
K7 - Come Baby Come
Heavy D & The Boyz - Is It Good To You
Ahmahd - Back In The Da

Nuff' respect for dropping "Funky For You" in this one. Too essential, and slept on.

DNB fans, rejoice: this week's FYLP is chock full of upfront DNB mixing from the likes of Commix, Brookes Brothers, Sol.ID, DJ Flight, Dub Alley, and a recording of sets from Gridlok, Hive & Dieselboy. Say word.

That new G-Unit video for "Feel Good" got the big booty ho's, but like Enigmatik said, your best bet is to peep this one at home:

Have a good one!

rock the dub radio on TONIGHT

Just sending the word out that the latest edition of rock the dub radio (episode 008 for those who are counting), will be premiering on WGHH Radio tonight, 10PM EST. Since the 2007-08 NBA season started the other day, I made it with a Basketball-theme. Loads of roundball-related interludes and tunes; whether it's a track dedicated to hoops or something that references hoops, it's in there. I think it came out rather nice, and if you need 2 hours of hot hot heat, we got you.
Peep WGHH Radio on Live 365, or peep the flash player via (as well as hittin' up the latest Hip-Hop news), and make sure you hit up the WGHH Radio Live Journal page.
One love.

This is the THUGSTEP version of that Crime Mob song that incites fights at Harvard University. True Story. The infamous DJ Nappy has concocted a crazy treat right here: takin' the ready-to-rumble lyrics from the fearsome foursome of Crime Mob (featuring Lil' Scrappy) and dropping it atop the computer dub of Kion's "Yard Music". I like how the girls sound on this one, personally: that one chick does this doubletime thing that kind of gets old after a while, but when she drops in, it is timed perfectly with the track, and duly jams harder.

Get your thug on.

Throwin' Stones

Just got the Stones Throw newsletter, and there's some ill shit in there:

  • The latest Stones Throw podcast is a DJ Rhettmatic mix of Guilty Simpson tracks entitled Stray Bullets. Don't sleep.
  • Peanut Butter Wolf has a Christmas-themed mix coming entitled Badd Santa, which would go great with THIS Bad Santa. If you want to send both to the rock the dub war room, email me for my mailing address.
  • Talib Kweli recently interviewed Madlib on BET's Rap City. Seriously:

Told you.

The Observation Deck (30th Oct. 2007)

  • Those Kim Kardashian Playboy pics aren't as ill as you might think. She's a dime but these are kind of meh.
  • You gotta love how Jim Jones is REAL QUICK to throw a free album out there to coincide with American Gangster.
  • Biggie Smalls' family is saying that dude who recanted his testimony months ago was lying. This trial is the worst. RIP Christopher Wallace.
  • The Oprah Winfrey school in South Africa is being marred by a sex abuse scandal that is very disheartening, especially when you realize that Oprah was a victim of sex abuse in her younger days.
  • Don't be surprised if your favorite TV show hits the rerun trail soon - the writers of many shows finna strike come Thursday; makes sense, though - they need to retwerk their contracts to include proceeds from mobisodes, webisodes and the like.
  • Niggas at Harvard fuck shit up when "Knuck If You Buck" comes on? There are some gully spots around that area... the "black" hoods around there keep it thoro.
  • How crazy will it be for you lucky Wii owners who get to create your own levels in Super Smash Bros. Brawl?!?
  • I'm down for Barack Obama, b/c he is down for Net Neutrality.
